    Lateral piezoelectric response across ferroelectric domain walls in thin films

    In purely c-axis oriented PbZr0.2_{0.2}Ti0.8_{0.8}O3_3 ferroelectric thin films, a lateral piezoresponse force microscopy signal is observed at the position of 180{\deg}domain walls, where the out-of-plane oriented polarization is reversed. Using electric force microscopy measurements we exclude electrostatic effects as the origin of this signal. Moreover, our mechanical simulations of the tip/cantilever system show that the small tilt of the surface at the domain wall below the tip does not satisfactorily explain the observed signal either. We thus attribute this lateral piezoresponse at domain walls to their sideways motion (shear) under the applied electric field. From simple elastic considerations and the conservation of volume of the unit cell, we would expect a similar lateral signal more generally in other ferroelectric materials, and for all types of domain walls in which the out-of-plane component of the polarization is reversed through the domain wall. We show that in BiFeO3_3 thin films, with 180, 109 and 71{\deg}domain walls, this is indeed the case.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures. to appear in J. Appl. Phys.     Shear effects in lateral piezoresponse force microscopy at 180^\circ ferroelectric domain walls

    In studies using piezoresponse force microscopy, we observe a non-zero lateral piezoresponse at 180^\circ domain walls in out-of-plane polarized, c-axis-oriented tetragonal ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.2_{0.2}Ti0.8_{0.8})O3_3 epitaxial thin films. We attribute these observations to a shear strain effect linked to the sign change of the d33d_{33} piezoelectric coefficient through the domain wall, in agreement with theoretical predictions. We show that in monoclinically distorted tetragonal BiFeO3_3 films, this effect is superimposed on the lateral piezoresponse due to actual in-plane polarization, and has to be taken into account in order to correctly interpret the ferroelectric domain configuration.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Population Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics Modeling of Torasemide and Furosemide After Oral Repeated Administration in Healthy Dogs

    Torasemide is a loop diuretic licensed in dogs for cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. The aim of this pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) study was to define an optimally effective dosage regimen based on preclinical data. In a first study, 5 dogs received once-daily oral torasemide (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 mg/kg/day) for 14 days. A second study compared once-daily oral torasemide (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 mg/kg/day) to twice-daily furosemide (1, 2, 4, 8 mg/kg/day). For all doses of the second study, 11 dogs received a first day of treatment, followed by a 3 day washout and resumed daily treatment for 10 days (until Day 14). Blood and urine were collected to measure urinary torasemide excretion and plasma torasemide concentrations and daily diuresis and natriuresis. Torasemide PK was linear. After rapid absorption (Tmax 0.5–1 h), 61% of the bioavailable torasemide was eliminated unchanged in urine. Diuresis and natriuresis observed with torasemide were similar to the ones obtained after furosemide (daily dose-ratios: 1/20 to 1/10). The average diuresis increased from baseline (220 ± 53 mL/day for 10 kg dogs) to 730 ±120 mL after the first torasemide administration and up to 1150 ± 252 mL after 10 administrations at the highest dose. At higher doses (≥0.3 mg/kg/day), daily diureses after 10 diuretic treatment-days were higher than Day 1 and variable between dogs; in contrast, diureses remained constant over time and less variable for doses up to 0.2 mg/kg/day. Natriuresis peaked after the first day and decreased dramatically after the 2nd treatment-day then stabilized to a value close to baseline, except for 0.4 mg/kg/day. Urinary torasemide excretion predicted pharmacodynamics better than plasma concentrations. The decrease in natriuresis observed was successfully modeled using a resistance mechanism; this is likely due to a reabsorption of sodium which did not seem however to affect the volume of urine excreted. For a daily target diuresis of 460 mL/dog/day in severe pulmonary oedema (net fluid loss 240 mL/dog/day), a computed dose of 0.26 mg/kg/day (3.5 mg/kg/day furosemide-equivalent) was selected for clinical studies. Due to high inter-individual variability in diureses at doses ≥0.3 mg/kg, higher doses should be limited to 3–5 days to avoid supra-clinical effects in high responders

    The DICE calibration project: design, characterization, and first results

    We describe the design, operation, and first results of a photometric calibration project, called DICE (Direct Illumination Calibration Experiment), aiming at achieving precise instrumental calibration of optical telescopes. The heart of DICE is an illumination device composed of 24 narrow-spectrum, high-intensity, light-emitting diodes (LED) chosen to cover the ultraviolet-to-near-infrared spectral range. It implements a point-like source placed at a finite distance from the telescope entrance pupil, yielding a flat field illumination that covers the entire field of view of the imager. The purpose of this system is to perform a lightweight routine monitoring of the imager passbands with a precision better than 5 per-mil on the relative passband normalisations and about 3{\AA} on the filter cutoff positions. The light source is calibrated on a spectrophotometric bench. As our fundamental metrology standard, we use a photodiode calibrated at NIST. The radiant intensity of each beam is mapped, and spectra are measured for each LED. All measurements are conducted at temperatures ranging from 0{\deg}C to 25{\deg}C in order to study the temperature dependence of the system. The photometric and spectroscopic measurements are combined into a model that predicts the spectral intensity of the source as a function of temperature. We find that the calibration beams are stable at the 10410^{-4} level -- after taking the slight temperature dependence of the LED emission properties into account. We show that the spectral intensity of the source can be characterised with a precision of 3{\AA} in wavelength. In flux, we reach an accuracy of about 0.2-0.5% depending on how we understand the off-diagonal terms of the error budget affecting the calibration of the NIST photodiode.     Multiscaling analysis of ferroelectric domain wall roughness

    Using multiscaling analysis, we compare the characteristic roughening of ferroelectric domain walls in PZT thin films with numerical simulations of weakly pinned one-dimensional interfaces. Although at length scales up to a length scale greater or equal to 5 microns the ferroelectric domain walls behave similarly to the numerical interfaces, showing a simple mono-affine scaling (with a well-defined roughness exponent), we demonstrate more complex scaling at higher length scales, making the walls globally multi-affine (varying roughness exponent at different observation length scales). The dominant contributions to this multi-affine scaling appear to be very localized variations in the disorder potential, possibly related to dislocation defects present in the substrate.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Assessment of plasma amyloid-β42/40 and cognitive decline among community-dwelling older adults

    Importance: Plasma measurement of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides has been associated with cognitive function, but evidence of its ability to identify cognitive decline is still scarce. Objective: To investigate the associations between plasma Aβ42/40 and cognitive decline over time among community-dwelling older adults with subjective memory concerns. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter cohort study used data from volunteers in the 5-year study Multidomain Alzheimer Preventive Trial (MAPT). Participants were aged 70 years or older and observed for a median (interquartile range) of 3.9 (2.0-4.0) years. Recruitment of participants started in May 2008 and ended in February 2011. Follow-up ended in April 2016. Data analysis was conducted from April to October 2020. Exposure: Plasma Aβ42 and Aβ40 were measured at 12 months for 448 participants (92.8%) and at 24 months for the rest. The moment of Aβ assessment was defined as the baseline for this study. Main Outcomes and Measures: Cognitive function was assessed at 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months by a composite cognitive score based on 4 tests; Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE); Clinical Dementia Rating, sum of boxes; and Alzheimer Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living. Mixed-effect linear regressions were performed. Results: A total of 483 participants (median [IQR] age, 76.0 [73.0-80.0]; 286 [59.2%] women) were analyzed. Of them, 161 (33.3%) were classified as low plasma Aβ42/40 (≤0.107). After adjusting for age, sex, education, body mass index, Geriatric Depression Scale score, apolipoprotein E ε4 genotype, and MAPT intervention groups, low plasma Aβ42/40 was associated with more pronounced decline in composite cognitive score (adjusted between-group mean difference: -0.20, 95% CI, -0.34 to -0.07; P = .004) and decline in MMSE score (adjusted between-group mean difference: -0.59; 95% CI, -1.07 to -0.11; P = .02) during the follow-up period compared with the group with an Aβ42/40 ratio greater than 0.107. Conclusions and Relevance: In this study, low plasma Aβ42/40 was associated with more pronounced decline in cognitive function (measured by multiple outcomes) over time. Findings suggest that plasma Aβ42/40 may be used to identify people at risk of cognitive decline, being an alternative to more complex and expensive measures, such as positron emission tomography imaging or cerebrospinal fluid measurement

    A nonlinear electro-thermal model for high power RF LDMOS transistors

    A new nonlinear, charge-conservative, dynamic electro-thermal compact model for LDMOS RF power transistors is described in this paper. The transistor is characterized using pulsed I-V and S-parameter measurements, to ensure isothermal conditions. The intrinsic model current and charge sources are obtained by integration of the real and imaginary components, respectively, of the small-signal Y-parameters: this yields a charge-conservative model by design. A thermal sub-circuit is used to introduce dynamic thermal dependence, and thermal threshold voltage shift is built in. DC and large-signal validation of the model is presented. © 2008 IEEE

    The OPERA experiment Target Tracker

    The main task of the Target Tracker detector of the long baseline neutrino oscillation OPERA experiment is to locate in which of the target elementary constituents, the lead/emulsion bricks, the neutrino interactions have occurred and also to give calorimetric information about each event. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multi-anode photomultiplier tubes.
