Measuring the Initial Transient: Reflected Brownian Motion
We analyze the convergence to equilibrium of one-dimensional reflected
Brownian motion (RBM) and compute a number of related initial transient
formulae. These formulae are of interest as approximations to the initial
transient for queueing systems in heavy traffic, and help us to identify
settings in which initialization bias is significant. We conclude with a
discussion of mean square error for RBM. Our analysis supports the view that
initial transient effects for RBM and related models are typically of modest
size relative to the intrinsic stochastic variability, unless one chooses an
especially poor initialization.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Central Limit Theorems and Large Deviations for Additive Functionals of Reflecting Diffusion Processes
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations
results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which
the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of
boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and
large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals
that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings
in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics.
In particular, the paper establishes the partial differential equations that
must be solved in order to explicitly compute the mean and variance for the
CLT, as well as the associated rate function for the large deviations

Life is beautiful: gay representation, moral panics, and South Korean television drama beyond Hallyu
Critical attention on Korean popular culture, particularly outside of Korea, has focused upon the Hallyu cultural phenomenon at the expense of sectors of the Korean creative industries that have sought to actively engage with their social and cultural environment and challenge the status quo. Politically charged, countercultural or just distinctive and/or original, non-Hallyu cultural artifacts have been and continue to be born out of a desire to be creative, to comment on or to create social change. This article focuses upon one such critically overlooked South Korean cultural artifact, the audacious and genuinely groundbreaking television drama "Life is Beautiful" (SBS 2010), which motivated an immense amount of critical and social reaction within Korea and yet has barely featured in English language analysis of Korean drama because it has not been classified as Hallyu. This is in spite of it being a finely produced and performed series and one written by the most prolific, longest serving and commercially successful of all Korean writers of Hallyu drama, Kim Soo-hyeon. In addition to its impressive production credentials, "Life is Beautiful" is also notable for being hugely controversial at the time of its broadcast due to its boldness in tackling the subject of Korean prejudice towards homosexuality
International circulation and local retaliation: East Asian television drama and its Asian connotations
This chapter argues that a drawback of recent scholarly focus on regional distinctiveness and pan-Asianism is that an incomplete picture has hitherto been presented of the role contemporary Asian television drama is playing in transnational cultural exchange. Emphasis on the Asian-ness of Asian television drama, this chapter proposes, has resulted in neglect of aspects of the dramas that are appealing to broad non-Asian audiences. Further, large audiences who ardently watch East Asian drama but who do not fit into very broad definitions of what it means to be Asian have been marginalised. In addition, the chapter asserts that an excessive concentration on the socially positive impacts of the circulation of East Asian drama have obscured many of the less socially desirable and divisive nationalistic discourses that have surrounded inter-Asian cross-border transmission
Concentration of white blood cells from whole blood by dual centrifugo-pneumatic siphoning with density gradient medium
Due to the pervasiveness of HIV infections in developing countries there exists a need for a low-cost, user-friendly point-of-care device which can be used to monitor the concentration of T-lymphocytes in the patientâs blood expressing the CD4+ epitope. As a first step towards developing a microfluidic âlab-on-a-discâ platform with this aim we present the concentration of white blood cells from whole blood using a density medium in conjunction with centrifugo-pneumatic siphon valves [1]. Two such valves are actuated simultaneously, removing the bulk of plasma through the upper valve and the bulk of WBCs through the lower valve while leaving the vast majority of red blood cells in the centrifugal chamber
Development of British railway accounting: 1800-1911
This paper concentrates on accounting aspects arising from the development of the railways. Railways in nineteenth century Britain had a major influence in reshaping some of the legislative procedures in parliament, the development of the capital market, and the economy at large. A background is provided to the first government regulations, introduced in 1840, and all subsequent major developments which led up to the Railway Companies (Accounts and Returns) Act, 1911. Why had it taken over eighty years (since the first commercial railway was established in 1830) to produce a standard presentation of accounts and financial reports
