Longevity of doublegee seed under continuous pasture

Locality: Avondale, Wongan Hills and Chapman Research Stations. Background. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Each site was sprayed for doublegee control in the growing season before the first samples were taken in late summer of 73/74. The sites were again sprayed in the 1974 growing season except for Wongan Hills. The Wongan Hills site was cropped in 1976 and no further data is available. 74C7, 75WH65, 75WH66, 76AL11, 76C9, 76C6, 77C3, 77GE9, 77LC26, 77ME28, 77M028, 77N034, 77WH3

The effect of applied nitrogen and subterranean clover on the growth of doublegee

    Get PDF
Until 20 years ago doublegees in Western Australia were mainly confined to the red-brown earth soils of the wheatbelt. Since then, they have spread to light loamy sand soils in the wheatbelt, many of which have carried subterranean clover from the mid-1940s onwards. It has been widely presumed that the spread of doublegees on to the lighter sandy soils of W.A. can be associated with the establishment of subterranean clover on these soils. This report summarises the results of a glasshouse experiment on the effect of clover and nitrogen on the growth of doublegee

The objectives of the field experimental programme for 1974 were to - 1) Evaluate a technique to measure pasture loss as a result of doublegee infestation at Merredin, Wongan.Hills and Chapman. 2) Evaluate the effect of cultural and herbicide treatment combinations on the magnitude and distribution of viable doublegee seeds in the soil at Avondale, Merredin, Wongan Hills and Chapman. 3) Measure the magnitude and distribution of viable doublegee seeds in the soil from paddocks representing each year of a two crop, plus three year pastureley rotation at Avondale, Merredin, Wongan Hills and Chapman. 4) Screen herbicides for selective control of doublegee in legume pasture at Avondale, Merredin, Wongan Hills, Mullewa, and Chapman. 5) Evaluate the tolerance of Tournefield medic to Tribunil at Gerald ton. 6) Compare several herbicides with a cultural treatment on doublegees that emerge after late summer rains in an expected false break situation at Wongan Hills. 7) A co-operative project with CSIRO was commenced on the biological control of doublegee with the introduction of the weevil Apion antiquum at two wheat-belt sites. Doublegee seed longevity x depth - 75WH66, 76C9, 76KA8. Grass control in dry sown lupins – 81A46, 81GE21, 81TS33. Broadleaf weed control in dry sown lupins – 81TS34, 81A47. Early post-emergence weed control – 81GE20. Early post-emergence weed control - lupins - 81TS32, 81A45. Post-emergence grass control in lupins. Post-emergence grass control in lupins None of the mixtures of Barban with Hoegrass and Matavin controlled the main target, Bromegrass. No significant differences due to treatments were detected in grain yields except at Avondale where annual ryegrass was the main grass weed which was controlled readily by the Hoegrass treatments as expected. No phytotoxic effects of the herbicides were detected on the lupins. Post emergence grass control - 81A44, 81GE19, 81TS31. Herbicides on kiev mutant lupins – 81A43, Herbicide x tillage lupins - 81ME36 Effect of stubble and simazine on lupins Grain yield did not increase when simazine was applied above 1 L/ha, even though better weed control was achieved with increasing rates of simazine. The amount of stubble had no effect on the grain yield or weed control. Simazine x stubble - 81BA56. Weed control in lupins x seeding methods No yield response to the simazine occurred, although the herbicides significantly reduced both grass and broadleaf weeds. One L simazine/ha was the best rate for weed control. Weed control in lupins - 81BA50. Grass control in lupins with PP009 and RM217. Best yield was obtained with 125 g ai/ha. Best weed control at 500 g ai/ha and good crop tolerance to 1 kg ai/ha with both products, which show a good potential as selective post-emergence herbicides for bromegrass control. Lupins - PP009 and RM217 - post-emergence grass control - 80GE27 Effect of SSH 0860 on lupins and weeds. SSH did not increase grain yield at Badgingarra and significantly increased grain yield at Avondale where 1 kg was the best rate applied immediately before seeding. SSH 0860 - lupins - 81BA55, 81A51. Sencor on lupin and weeds. Sencor performed differently on the medium soil at Avondale from the lighter soil at Badgingarra. Sencor lupins - 81A50, 81BA54

SUMMARY Stomp controlled the widest range of weeds with a wide margin of crop tolerance. Recommend. 3 l/ha or lower before transplanting. Bensulide controlled grasses well, but did not control nightshade. Recommend 12 l/ha after transplanting. Lasso controlled a wide range of weeds, but the margin of selectivity is narrow. Recommended maximum 4 l/ha. Surflan controlled all weeds well, except nightshade, when applied after transplanting. The margin of selectivity is narrow on tomato and zero for nightshade. Recommend 1.5 1 after transplanting. Trifluralin controlled 3 weeds, and the margin of selectivity is narrow. Recommend rate of 4 l/ha. Trials - 80MD26, 80MD17, 80MD30, 80MD28, 80MD29
