    Antioxidative Activities of Alfalfa and Timothy Varieties

    The term functional foods is often used as a generic description for the beneficial effects of ingested foods that go beyond their traditional nutritive value (Bauman et al., 2001). Milk and dairy products are important dietary sources of nutrients, providing energy, high quality protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Recent research has focused on altering the fat and protein content of milk and other dairy products in order to improve their nutrient content to more aptly reflect current dietary recommendations and trends. As a result, additional focus is being given to designing foods that have beneficial effects on human health. This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative activities of forages grown in Korea

    Oxidation of the Ediacaran Ocean

    Oxygenation of the Earth's surface is increasingly thought to have occurred in two steps. The first step, which occurred ~2,300 million years (Myr) ago, involved a significant increase in atmospheric oxygen concentrations and oxygenation of the surface ocean. A further increase in atmospheric oxygen appears to have taken place during the late Neoproterozoic period (~800–542 Myr ago). This increase may have stimulated the evolution of macroscopic multicellular animals and the subsequent radiation of calcified invertebrates, and may have led to oxygenation of the deep ocean. However, the nature and timing of Neoproterozoic oxidation remain uncertain. Here we present high-resolution carbon isotope and sulphur isotope records from the Huqf Supergroup, Sultanate of Oman, that cover most of the Ediacaran period (~635 to ~548 Myr ago). These records indicate that the ocean became increasingly oxygenated after the end of the Marinoan glaciation, and they allow us to identify three distinct stages of oxidation. When considered in the context of other records from this period, our data indicate that certain groups of eukaryotic organisms appeared and diversified during the second and third stages of oxygenation. The second stage corresponds with the Shuram excursion in the carbon isotope record and seems to have involved the oxidation of a large reservoir of organic carbon suspended in the deep ocean, indicating that this event may have had a key role in the evolution of eukaryotic organisms. Our data thus provide new insights into the oxygenation of the Ediacaran ocean and the stepwise restructuring of the carbon and sulphur cycles that occurred during this significant period of Earth's history

    A dynamic Archean sulfur cycle

    Many aspects of the Earth’s early sulfur cycle, from the origin of mass anomalous fractionations to the scale and degree of biological involvement, remain poorly understood. We have been studying the nature of multiple sulfur isotope (^(32)S, ^(33)S, and ^(34)S) signals using a novel combination of scanning high-resolution low-temperature superconductivity SQUID microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) techniques in a suite of samples from distal slope and basinal environments adjacent to a major Late Archean-age (~2.6-2.52 Ga) carbonate platform. Coupled with petrography, these techniques allow us to interrogate, at the same microscopic scale, the complex history of mineralization in samples containing diverse sulfide-bearing mineral components. Because of a general lack of Archean sulfate minerals, we focused our analyses on early diagenetic pyrite nodules, precipitated in surface sediments. This allows us to assay fractionations by controlling for isotope mass balance

    Spatial Grain Size Sorting in Eolian Ripples and Estimation of Wind Conditions on Planetary Surfaces: Application to Meridiani Planum, Mars

    The landscape seen by the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity at Meridiani Planum is dominated by eolian (wind-blown) ripples with concentrated surface lags of hematitic spherules and fragments. These ripples exhibit profound spatial grain size sorting, with well-sorted coarse-grained crests and poorly sorted, generally finer-grained troughs. These ripples were the most common bed form encountered by Opportunity in its traverse from Eagle Crater to Endurance Crater. Field measurements from White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, show that such coarse-grained ripples form by the different transport modes of coarse- and fine-grain fractions. On the basis of our field study, and simple theoretical and experimental considerations, we show how surface deposits of coarse-grained ripples can be used to place tight constraints on formative wind conditions on planetary surfaces. Activation of Meridiani Planum coarse-grained ripples requires a wind velocity of 70 m/s (at a reference elevation of 1 m above the bed). From images by the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) of reversing dust streaks, we estimate that modern surface winds reach a velocity of at least 40 m/s and hence may occasionally activate these ripples. The presence of hematite at Meridiani Planum is ultimately related to formation of concretions during aqueous diagenesis in groundwater environments; however, the eolian concentration of these durable particles may have led to the recognition from orbit of this environmentally significant landing site

    Year-Round Forage Systems for Beef Cows and Calves

    Beef cow systems in the USA are based on forages with little or no concentrates fed. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. L.) is one of the important pasture forages in the lower Northeast and upper South (Allen et al., 2001). Limited research has been conducted on year-round all forage systems based on cool season forages. Stockpiling tall fescue in late summer-early fall provides good quality forage that is usually grazed rather than harvested. Forage systems including tall fescue and clover (Trifolium repens L.) produced excellent performance in beef cows and calves, with minimum inputs (Allen et al., 2001). The present experiment is a component of a larger initiative, Pasture-based Forage Systems for Appalachia.     Carbon Isotope and Lipid Biomarker Stratigraphy from Organic-Rich Strata Through the Neoproterozoic Shuram Excursion in South Oman

    The regulation of oxygen levels in Earth’s atmosphere and oceans is inextricably linked to the carbon cycle. Carbon isotope ratios of carbonate and sedimentary organic matter provide first order insights into the operation of the carbon cycle in the geologic past. During the Ediacaran period, the ~580 Ma ‘Shuram Excursion’ (SE) records a dramatic, systematic shift in δ^(13)C_(carbonate) values to as low as cɑ. -12‰, lasting potentially millions to tens of millions of years in duration and constitutes the largest carbon isotope excursion known in the record [1]. The extremely negative carbon isotope values in carbonate challenges our understanding of the ancient carbon cycle and is difficult to rationalise via uniform carbon cycle principles. Several hypotheses have been developed to explain this behaviour, all of which make different predictions for the abundance, structure, and isotopic composition of organic carbon through the excursion. For a direct test of these ideas, we report paired organic and inorganic stable carbon isotope ratios in addition to detailed lipid biomarker stratigraphic records from a subsurface well drilled on the eastern flank of the South Oman Salt Basin, Sultanate of Oman. This well captures thermally immature and organic-rich Nafun Group strata traversing the SE, yielding variable but primary biomarker characteristics typical of Neoproterozoic rocks from this region. Despite the high organic matter contents, the carbon isotopic compositions of carbonates do not covary with those of organic phases. Furthermore, lipid biomarker data reveal that organic matter composition and source inputs varied stratigraphically, reflecting biological community shifts in non-migrated, syngenetic organic matter deposited during this interval. Together these observations imply that carbonateorganic isotopic decoupling during the SE is not a result of mixing of fossil or exogenous carbon sources (either DOC, detrital, or migrated) with syngenetic organic matter
