Phylogenetic analyses of typical bovine rotavirus genotypes G6, G10, P[5] and P[11] circulating in Argentinean beef and dairy herds
Group A rotavirus (RVA) is one of the main causes of neonatal calf diarrhea worldwide. RVA strains affecting Argentinean cattle mainly possess combinations of the G6, G10, P[5] and P[11] genotypes. To determine RVA diversity among Argentinean cattle, representative bovine RVA strains detected in diarrheic calves were selected from a survey conducted during 1997–2009. The survey covered the main livestock regions of the country from dairy and beef herds. Different phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate the genetic evolution of RVA strains belonging to the prevalent genotypes. The nucleotide phylogenetic tree showed that all genotypes studied could be divided into several lineages. Argentinean bovine RVA strains were distributed across multiple lineages and most of them were distinct from the lineage containing the vaccine strains. Only the aminoacid phylogenetic tree of G6 RVA strains maintained the same lineages as observed at the nucleotide level, whereas a different clustering pattern was observed for the aminoacid phylogenetic trees of G10, P[5] and P[11] suggesting that the strains are more closely related at the aminoacid level than G6 strains. Association between P[5] and G6(IV), prevalent in beef herd, and between P[11] and G6(III) or G10 (VI and V), prevalent in dairy herds, were found. In addition, Argentinean G6(III), G10, P[5] and P[11] bovine RVA strains grouped together with human strains, highlighting their potential for zoonotic transmission. Phylogenetic studies of RVA circulating in animals raised for consumption and in close contact with humans, such as cattle, contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of the RVA infection and evolution.Fil: Badaracco, Alejandra. Effects of livestock pressure and vegetation cover on the spatial and temporal structure of soil microarthropod communities in Iberian rangelands
Forests, including their soils, play an important role since they represent a large reservoir of biodiversity. Current studies show that the diversity of soil fauna provides multiple ecosystem functions and services across biomes. However, anthropogenic practices often pose a threat to soil fauna because of changes in land use and soil mismanagement. In these terms, rangelands in the southwest of Spain present several problems of soil degradation related to livestock activity and soil erosion, the intensity of which compromises the soil fauna's functions in the ecosystem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the response of community metrics and the spatial distribution of soil microarthropods to livestock activity and vegetation in such ecosystems. A photo interpretation analysis of an experimental catchment used as a study area was developed to identify and classify the intensity of livestock pressure. A total of 150 soil samples were collected throughout 2018. Soil biological (CO2 efflux) and physical-chemical parameters (pH, bulk density, organic matter, and water contents), and such meteorological variables as precipitation, temperature, and evapotranspiration were considered as variables affecting the composition of microarthropod communities in terms of taxa diversity, abundances, and their adaptation to soil environment (evaluated by QBS-ar index). Results showed higher abundance of microarthropods and higher adaptation to soil environment outside the influence of trees rather than beneath tree canopies. Moreover, the classification of livestock pressure revealed by the photo interpretation analysis showed low correlations with community structure, as well as with the occurrence of well-adapted microarthropod groups that were found less frequently in areas with evidence of intense livestock activity. Furthermore, abundances and adaptations followed different spatial patterns. Due to future climate changes and increasing anthropogenic pressure, it is necessary to continue the study of soil fauna communities to determine their degree of sensitivity to such changes
A Competition between Relative Stability and Binding Energy in Caffeine Phenyl-Glucose Aggregates: Implications in Biological Mechanisms
Hydrogen bonds and stacking interactions are pivotal in biological mechanisms, although their proper characterisation within a molecular complex remains a difficult task. We used quantum mechanical calculations to characterise the complex between caffeine and phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, in which several functional groups of the sugar derivative compete with each other to attract caffeine. Calculations at different levels of theory (M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) and B3LYP-ED=GD3BJ/def2TZVP) agree to predict several structures similar in stability (relative energy) but with different affinity (binding energy). These computational results were experimentally verified by laser infrared spectroscopy, through which the caffeine center dot phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside complex was identified in an isolated environment, produced under supersonic expansion conditions. The experimental observations correlate with the computational results. Caffeine shows intermolecular interaction preferences that combine both hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions. This dual behaviour had already been observed with phenol, and now with phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, it is confirmed and maximised. In fact, the size of the complex's counterparts affects the maximisation of the intermolecular bond strength because of the conformational adaptability given by the stacking interaction. Comparison with the binding of caffeine within the orthosteric site of the A2A adenosine receptor shows that the more strongly bound caffeine center dot phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside conformer mimics the interactions occurring within the receptor
Tectonic evolution of Variscan Iberia: Gondwana–Laurussia
An integrated interpretation of the late Paleozoic structural and geochronological record of the Iberian Massif is
presented and discussed under the perspective of a Gondwana-Laurussia collision giving way to the Variscan
orogen. Compressional and extensional structures developed during the building of the Variscan orogenic crust
of Iberia are linked together into major tectonic events operating at lithosphere scale. A review of the
tectonometamorphic and magmatic evolution of the IberianMassif reveals backs and forths in the overall conver-
gence between Gondwana and Laurussia during theamalgamation of Pangea in late Paleozoic times. Stages dom-
inated by lithosphere compression are characterized by subduction, both oceanic and continental, development
of magmatic arcs, (over- and under-) thrusting of continental lithosphere, and folding. Variscan convergence re-
sulted in the eventual transference of a large allochthonous set of peri-Gondwanan terranes, the Iberian
Allochthon, onto the Gondwana mainland. The Iberian Allochthon bears the imprint of previous interaction be-
tween Gondwana and Laurussia, including their juxtaposition after the closure of the Rheic Ocean in Lower De-
vonian times. Stages governed by lithosphere extension are featured by the opening of two short-lived oceanic
basins that dissected previous Variscan orogenic crust, first in the Lower-Middle Devonian, following the closure
of the Rheic Ocean, and then in the early Carboniferous, following the emplacement of the peri-Gondwanan
allochthon. An additional, major intra-orogenic extensional event in the early-middle Carboniferous dismem-
bered the Iberian Allochthon into individual thrust stacks separated by extensional faults and domes. Lateral tec-
tonics played an important role through the Variscan orogenesis, especially during the creation of new tectonic
blocks separated by intracontinental strike-slip shear zones in the late stages of continental convergence
Effectiveness of a cardiovascular risk management program in the reduction of premature mortality associated to cardiovascular events in the Caribbean region of Colombia
Objectives: To establish the effectiveness of a cardiovascular risk management program [“De Todo Corazon (DTC)” program in Mutual SER-EPS] in the reduction of premature mortality associated to cardiovascular events (CVE) (male , 55 years, female , 60 years). Methods: The population eligible for the study were patients over 18 years of age affiliated to Mutual SER insurance company between June 2015 and June 2018 and residents of the Caribbean region of Colombia, enrolled or not to DTC program in which a cardiovascular event (CVE) occurred. The main outcomes considered were age of occurrence of cardiovascular events (AOCVE), age at death due to CVE (ADCVE) and years life lost (YLL). For the evaluation of the effectiveness, differences in AOCVO, ADCVO and the YPLL between the patients enrolled and nonenrolled in the DTC program were estimated using a Simple Linear Regression model. Results: A total of 3.902 CVE occurred in the study period among both groups. The enrolled patients had an average of AOCVE of 4.96 years (95% CI 3.85-6.06) higher than in non-enrolled patients. The ADCVE average was 4.64 years (95% CI 1.47 - 7.81) higher in the enrolled patients compared with the non-enrolled patients. Patients enrolled in the DTC program had on average -3.54 (95% CI -5.62 - -1.46) YLL compared to the non-enrolled patients. Conclusions: The DTC program in Mutual SER-EPS was effective to delay the AOCVE, ADCVE and YPLL. DTC program is an effective strategy to reduce the incidence and premature mortality due to CVE in the Caribbean region of Colombia

Cardiac Arrhythmias after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Risk Factors and Impact on Outcome
Objective: Serious cardiac arrhythmias have been described in approximately 5% of patients after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The aim of this study was to identify the frequency, risk factors and clinical impact of cardiac arrhythmia after SAH. Methods: We prospectively studied 580 spontaneous SAH patients and identified risk factors and complications associated with the development of clinically significant arrhythmia. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios for the effect of arrhythmia on hospital complications and 3-month outcome, as measured by the modified Rankin Scale, after controlling for age, neurological grade, APACHE-2 physiologic subscore, brain herniation and aneurysm size. Results: Arrhythmia occurred in 4.3% (n = 25) of patients. Atrial fibrillation and flutter were the most common arrhythmias, occurring in 76% (n = 19) of these patients. Admission predictors of cardiac arrhythmia included older age, history of arrhythmia and abnormal admission electrocardiogram (all p < 0.05). After adjusting for length of stay, hospital complications associated with arrhythmia included myocardial ischemia, hyperglycemia, and herniation (all p < 0.05). Arrhythmia was associated with an excess ICU stay of 5 days (p = 0.002). After adjusting for other predictors of outcome, arrhythmia was associated with an increased risk of death (adjusted OR 8.0, 95% confidence interval 1.9–34.0, p = 0.005), and death or severe disability (adjusted OR 6.9, 95% confidence interval 1.5–32.0, p = 0.014). Conclusions: Clinically important arrhythmias, most often atrial fibrillation or flutter, occurred in 4% of SAH patients. Arrhythmias are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular comorbidity, prolonged hospital stay and poor outcome or death after SAH, after adjusting for other predictors of poor outcome

Relative telomere length impact on mortality of COVID-19: Sex differences
Increasing age is associated with severity and higher mortality of COVID-19. Telomere shortening is associated with higher risk of infections and may be used to identify those patients who are more likely to die. We evaluated the association between relative telomere length (RTL) and COVID-19 mortality. RTL was measured in patients hospitalized because of COVID-19. We used Kaplan-Meier method to analyze survival probabilities, and Cox regression to investigate the association between RTL and mortality (30 and 90 days). Six hundred and eight patients were included in the analysis (mean age =72.5 years, 41.1% women, and 53.8% Caucasic). During the study period, 75 people died from COVID-19 and 533 survived. Lower RTL was associated with a higher risk of death in women either at 30 (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] (aHR) = 3.33; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-10.00; p = 0.040) and at 90 days (aHR = 3.57; 95%CI = 1.23-11.11; p = 0.019). Lower RTL was associated with a higher risk of dying of COVID-19 in women.
