Aharonov-Casher phase and persistent current in a polyacetylene ring
We investigate a polyacetylene ring in an axially symmetric, static electric
field with a modified SSH Hamiltonian of a polyacetylene chain. An effective
gauge potential of the single electron Hamiltonian due to spin-field
interaction is obtained and it results in a Fr\"{o}hlich's type of
superconductivity equivalent to the effect of travelling lattice wave. The
total energy as well as the persistent current density are shown to be a
periodic function of the flux of the gauge field embraced by the polyacetylene

Cantilever-based Resonant Gas Sensors with Integrated Recesses for Localized Sensing Layer Deposition
This work presents mass-sensitive hammerhead resonators with integrated recesses as a gas-phase chemical microsensor platform. Recesses are etched into the head region of the resonator to locally deposit chemically sensitive polymers by ink-jet printing. This permits the sensing films to be confined to areas that (a) are most effective in detecting mass loading and (b) are not strained during the in-plane vibrations of the resonator. As a result of the second point, even 5-μm thick polymer coatings on resonators with a 9-12 μm silicon thickness barely affect the Q-factor in air. This translates into higher frequency stability and ultimately higher sensor resolution compared to uniformly coated devices
Changing assessment practice in engineering: how can understanding lecturer perspectives help?
Assessment in engineering disciplines is typically oriented to demonstrating competence in specific tasks. Even where assessments are intended to have a formative component, little priority may be given to feedback. Engineering departments are often criticized, by their students and by external quality reviewers, for paying insufficient attention to formative assessment. The e3an project set out to build a question bank of peer-reviewed questions for use within electrical and electronic engineering. As a part of this process, a number of engineers from disparate institutions were required to work together in teams, designing a range of assessments for their subject specialisms. The project team observed that lecturers were especially keen to develop formative assessment but that their understanding of what might be required varied considerably. This paper describes the various ways in which the processes of the project have engaged lecturers in actively identifying and developing their conceptions of teaching, learning and assessment in their subject. It reports on an interview study that was conducted with a selection of participants. It is concluded that lecturers' reflections on and understanding of assessment are closely related to the nature of the subject domain and that it is essential when attempting to improve assessment practice to start from the perspective of lecturers in the discipline
Lie bialgebras of generalized Witt type
In a paper by Michaelis a class of infinite-dimensional Lie bialgebras
containing the Virasoro algebra was presented. This type of Lie bialgebras was
classified by Ng and Taft. In this paper, all Lie bialgebra structures on the
Lie algebras of generalized Witt type are classified. It is proved that, for
any Lie algebra of generalized Witt type, all Lie bialgebras on are
coboundary triangular Lie bialgebras. As a by-product, it is also proved that
the first cohomology group is trivial.Comment: 14 page
Nodeless energy gaps of single-crystalline Ba0.68K0.32Fe2As2 as seen via 75As NMR
We report As nuclear magnetic resonance studies on a very clean
hole-doped single-crystal BaKFeAs ( K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows an exponential
decrease below down to ,
which indicates a fully opened energy gap. From the ratio , where and denote the crystal directions, we find that the
antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation is anisotropic in the spin space above
. The anisotropy decreases below and disappears at . We argue that the anisotropy stems from spin-orbit coupling
whose effect vanishes when spin-singlet electron pairs form with a nodeless

Quenched Charmed Meson Spectra using Tadpole Improved Quark Action on Anisotropic Lattices
Charmed meson charmonium spectra are studied with improved quark actions on
anisotropic lattices. We measured the pseudo-scalar and vector meson dispersion
relations for 4 lowest lattice momentum modes with quark mass values ranging
from the strange quark to charm quark with 3 different values of gauge coupling
and 4 different values of bare speed of light . With the bare
speed of light parameter tuned in a mass-dependent way, we study the mass
spectra of , , ,
, and mesons.
The results extrapolated to the continuum limit are compared with the

Polarons as Nucleation Droplets in Non-Degenerate Polymers
We present a study of the nucleation mechanism that allows the decay of the
metastable phase (trans-cisoid) to the stable phase
(cis-transoid) in quasi one-dimensional non-degenerate polymers within the
continuum electron-phonon model. The electron-phonon configurations that lead
to the decay, i.e. the critical droplets (or transition state), are identified
as polarons of the metastable phase. We obtain an estimate for the decay rate
via thermal activation within a range of parameters consistent with
experimental values for the gap of the cis-configuration. It is pointed out
that, upon doping, the activation barriers of the excited states are quite
smaller and the decay rate is greatly enhanced. Typical activation energies for
electron or hole polarons are eV and the typical size for a
critical droplet (polaron) is about . Decay via quantum nucleation is
also studied and it is found that the crossover temperature between quantum
nucleation and thermal activation is of order . Metastable
configurations of non-degenerate polymers may provide examples for mesoscopic
