Development of EHD Ion-Drag Micropump for Microscale Electronics Cooling Systems
In this investigation, the numerical simulation of electrohydrodynamic (EHD)
ion-drag micropumps with micropillar electrode geometries have been performed.
The effect of micropillar height and electrode spacing on the performance of
the micropumps was investigated. The performance of the EHD micropump improved
with increased applied voltage and decreased electrode spacing. The optimum
micropillar height for the micropump with electrode spacing of 40m and
channel height of 100m at 200V was 40m, where a maximum mass flow
rate of 0.18g/min was predicted. Compared to that of planar electrodes, the 3D
micropillar electrode geometry enhanced the overall performance of the EHD
micropumps.Comment: Submitted on behalf of TIMA Editions

On landmark selection and sampling in high-dimensional data analysis
In recent years, the spectral analysis of appropriately defined kernel
matrices has emerged as a principled way to extract the low-dimensional
structure often prevalent in high-dimensional data. Here we provide an
introduction to spectral methods for linear and nonlinear dimension reduction,
emphasizing ways to overcome the computational limitations currently faced by
practitioners with massive datasets. In particular, a data subsampling or
landmark selection process is often employed to construct a kernel based on
partial information, followed by an approximate spectral analysis termed the
Nystrom extension. We provide a quantitative framework to analyse this
procedure, and use it to demonstrate algorithmic performance bounds on a range
of practical approaches designed to optimize the landmark selection process. We
compare the practical implications of these bounds by way of real-world
examples drawn from the field of computer vision, whereby low-dimensional
manifold structure is shown to emerge from high-dimensional video data streams.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, submitted for publicatio
Metallic characteristics in superlattices composed of insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3
We report on the electronic properties of superlattices composed of three
different antiferromagnetic insulators, NdMnO3/SrMnO3/LaMnO3 grown on SrTiO3
substrates. Photoemission spectra obtained by tuning the x-ray energy at the Mn
2p -> 3d edge show a Fermi cut-off, indicating metallic behavior mainly
originating from Mn e_g electrons. Furthermore, the density of states near the
Fermi energy and the magnetization obey a similar temperature dependence,
suggesting a correlation between the spin and charge degrees of freedom at the
interfaces of these oxides
Robustness of Majorana Fermion induced Fractional Josephson Effect
It is shown in previous works that the coupling between two Majorana end
states in superconducting quantum wires leads to fractional Josephson effect.
However, in realistic experimental conditions, multiple bands of the wires are
occupied and the Majorana end states are accompanied by other fermionic end
states. This raises the question concerning the robustness of fractional
Josephson effect in these situations. In this work, we show that the absence of
the avoided energy crossing which gives rise to the fractional Josephson effect
is robust, even when the Majorana fermions are coupled with arbitrary strengths
to other fermions. Moreover, we calculate the temperature dependence of the
fractional Josephson current and show that it is suppressed by thermal
excitations to the other fermion bound states.Comment: 4+ pages, 3 figure
