Seebeck Nanoantennas for Infrared Detection and Energy Harvesting Applications
In this letter we introduce a new type of infrared sensor, based on
thermocouple nanoantennas, which enables the energy detection and gathering in
the mid-infrared region. The proposed detector combines the Seebeck effect, as
a transduction mechanism, with the functionalities of the optical antennas for
optical sensing. By using finite-element numerical simulations we evaluate the
performance and optical-to-electrical conversion efficiency of the proposed
device, unveiling its potential for optical sensing and energy harvesting
applications.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Invited paper at EUCAP 201
Magnetic domain wall propagation in a submicron spin-valve stripe: influence of the pinned layer
The propagation of a domain wall in a submicron ferromagnetic spin-valve
stripe is investigated using giant magnetoresistance. A notch in the stripe
efficiently traps an injected wall stopping the domain propagation. The authors
show that the magnetic field at which the wall is depinned displays a
stochastic nature. Moreover, the depinning statistics are significantly
different for head to head and tail-to-tail domain walls. This is attributed to
the dipolar field generated in the vicinity of the notch by the pinned layer of
the spin-valve
This paper lists 65 selected taxa specially chosen for their chorological or taxonomical interest. From these we indicate 15 for the first time for the Checklist of Northern Morocco. Many other species previously cited from one natural area alone, based only on literature references, are confirmed here. Chamaesyce serpens (Kunth) Small and Fumana scoparia subsp. paradoxa (Heywood) Güemes are indicated for the first time for the Moroccan flora and 31 species are indicated as new for the Eastern part of Northern Morocco. Euphorbia exigua subsp. merinoi is mentioned for first time for AndalucÃa. One new taxon is described: Sideritis mezgouti Molero & J.M. Montserrat, sp. nova. The distribution of the species mentioned here shows that many belong to the Saharo-Arabic element, which represent a remarkable progression of the Saharan floristic element into the low basin of the river Moulouya.Proyecto BIOGEO (REN 2002-04478-CO3-03/GLO)GReB (2001SGR00125
360 degree domain wall generation in the soft layer of magnetic tunnel junctions
High spatial resolution X-ray photo-emission electron microscopy technique
has been used to study the influence of the dipolar coupling taking place
between the NiFe and the Co ferromagnetic electrodes of micron sized,
elliptical shaped magnetic tunnel junctions. The chemical selectivity of this
technique allows to observe independently the magnetic domain structure in each
ferromagnetic electrode. The combination of this powerful imaging technique
with micromagnetic simulations allows to evidence that a 360 degree domain wall
can be stabilized in the NiFe soft layer. In this letter, we discuss the origin
and the formation conditions of those 360 degree domain walls evidenced
experimentally and numerically
The Role of Identity in Acculturation among Immigrant People: Theoretical Propositions, Empirical Questions, and Applied Recommendations
The present paper advances theoretical propositions regarding the relationship between acculturation and identity. The most central thesis argued is that acculturation represents changes in cultural identity and that personal identity has the potential to ‘anchor’ immigrant people during their transition to a new society. The article emphasizes the experiences of nonwhite, non-Western immigrant people moving to Western nations. The article also calls for research on heretofore unexplored aspects of the relationship of acculturation to personal and social identity. Ideas are proposed for interventions to promote cultural identity change and personal identity coherence

Toward an Interdisciplinary Study of Acculturation, Identity, and Culture
As both Côté and Hand point out in their commentaries, acculturation, identity, and culture are complex processes that are determined and affected by the con-texts in which they operate. As we stated in our article in this issue, we do not dismiss the notion that culture and identity are complex and individualized phenomena that vary from one person or context to the next. However, our goal is pragmatic in that we wish to operationalize acculturation, identity, and culture for empirical research that can then be used to design and support intervention efforts. To design interventions that consist of core components but can be adapted for specific immigrant groups and receiving societies, we believe that it is necessary to develop ‘quasi-uni-versal’ principles about what personal, social, and cultural identity are and how they operate and are affected by the experience and process of international migration
