    Multiple template matching using the expansion filter

    The paper describes a multiple-template generalization of a newly developed approach for template matching by signal expansion into a set of non-orthogonal template-similar basis functions. The single-template method is proven to be equivalent to "restoration" of undegraded images using the Wiener filter and optimizes a new and more practically defined matching quality criterion that the authors call discriminative signal-to-noise ratio (DSNR). Compared to the widely used matched filtering approach (also known as correlation matching) which is based an projection, expansion matching is based on decomposition and is shown to be more robust in conditions of noise, superposition and severe occlusion. In the paper, the authors extend the DSNR optimization approach to include more than one template. The generalized expansion filter presented is optimal in terms of DSNR and can be designed to elicit any desired response for each of the templates, while optimizing the DSNR criterion. The approach considers additive noise as a parameter and leads to a general formulation, of which many previous approaches (such as the synthetic discriminant function) form special cases.     The Role of Values in Coping with Health and Economic Threats of COVID-19

    The current research examined the role of values in guiding people’s responses to COVID-19. Results from an international study involving 115 countries (N = 61,490) suggest that health and economic threats of COVID-19 evoke different values, with implications for controlling and coping with the pandemic. Specifically, health threats evoked prioritization of communal values related to caring for others and belonging, whereas economic threats predicted prioritization of agentic values focused on competition and achievement. Concurrently and over time, prioritizing communal values over agentic values was associated with enactment of prevention behaviors that reduce virus transmission, motivations to help others suffering from the pandemic, and positive attitudes toward outgroup members. These results, which were generally consistent across individual and national levels of analysis, suggest that COVID-19 threats may indirectly shape important responses to the pandemic through their influence on people’s prioritization of communion and agency. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Intestinal stem cells lacking the Math1 tumour suppressor are refractory to Notch inhibitors

    Intestinal cells are constantly produced from a stem cell reservoir that gives rise to proliferating transient amplifying cells, which subsequently differentiate into one of the four principal cell types. Signalling pathways, including the Notch signalling pathway, coordinate these differentiation processes and their deregulation may cause cancer. Pharmacological inhibition through γ-secretase inhibitors or genetic inactivation of the Notch signalling pathway results in the complete loss of proliferating crypt progenitors due to their conversion into post-mitotic goblet cells. The basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor Math1 is essential for intestinal secretory cell differentiation. Because of the critical roles of both Math1 and Notch signalling in intestinal homeostasis and neoplastic transformation, we sought to determine the genetic hierarchy regulating the differentiation of intestinal stem cells into secretory cells.
