    Accurate detection of sleep apnea with long short-term memory network based on RR interval signals

    Sleep apnea is a common condition that is characterized by sleep-disordered breathing. Worldwide the number of apnea cases has increased and there has been a growing number of patients suffering from apnea complications. Unfortunately, many cases remain undetected, because expensive and inconvenient examination methods are formidable barriers with regard to the diagnostics. Furthermore, treatment monitoring depends on the same methods which also underpin the initial diagnosis; hence issues related to the examination methods cause difficulties with managing sleep apnea as well. Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems could be a tool to increase the efficiency and efficacy of diagnosis. To investigate this hypothesis, we designed a deep learning model that classifies beat-to-beat interval traces, medically known as RR intervals, into apnea versus non-apnea. The RR intervals were extracted from Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals contained in the Apnea-ECG benchmark Database. Before feeding the RR intervals to the classification algorithm, the signal was band-pass filtered with an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck third-order Gaussian process. 10-fold cross-validation indicated that the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network has 99.80% accuracy, 99.85% sensitivity, and 99.73% specificity. With hold-out validation, the same network achieved 81.30% accuracy, 59.90% sensitivity, and 91.75% specificity. During the design, we learned that the band-pass filter improved classification accuracy by over 20%. The increased performance resulted from the fact that neural activation functions can process a DC free signal more efficiently. The result is likely transferable to the design of other RR interval based CAD systems, where the filter can help to improve classification performance

    Measuring What Students Know: SNAP’s Guidelines and Suggestions for Assessing Goal 1 Content in Psychology

    Although many psychology departments and instructors are aware of the American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major Version 2.0, they are often less aware of the means by which to assess student mastery of the recommended goals. Our purpose is to discuss general principles for assessment, offer a psychology learner taxonomy that aligns with Goal 1 of the Guidelines 2.0, and present a rubric for reviewing assessments. Goal 1 of the Guidelines 2.0 is based on content knowledge in psychology. Whereas most assessments allow for the measure of the mastery of content to different extents, the results of those assessments can be invalid due to the design or inappropriate use of the rubric. The working group at the Summit on National Assessment of Psychology addressed these issues and curated evidence-informed assessment exemplars designed to measure content knowledge in psychology

    Dental fluorosis among people and livestock living on Gihaya Island in Lake Kivu, Rwanda

    Abstract Background Dental fluorosis is caused by prolonged exposure to excessive fluoride during the period of permanent tooth formation and is characterized by tooth discoloration, pitting, and loss of shape. Communities living near Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda exhibit a high prevalence of dental fluorosis; however, data on prevalence and risk factors are scarce. Methods This cross sectional, quantitative study used a One Health approach to investigate dental fluorosis prevalence among people and livestock and to measure fluoride content in the environment. In 2018, oral health examinations were conducted to assess the prevalence of fluorosis in children (aged 9 to 15 years), cattle and goats residing on Gihaya Island (Rwanda, East Africa). All children and cattle/goats meeting basic eligibility criteria (e.g., island residence) were invited to participate. Presence and severity of dental fluorosis was categorized according to the Dean’s Fluorosis Index. Samples of local foods, water, soil and grass were collected from communal sources and individual households and analyzed for fluoride content using standard laboratory techniques. Descriptive and binomial analyses (Fisher Exact Test) were used to assess this dataset. Results Overall, 186 children and 85 livestock owners (providing data of 125 livestock -23 cattle and 102 goats) participated. Dental fluorosis was recorded in 90.7% of children and 76% of livestock. Moderate to severe fluorosis was observed in 77% children while goats and cattle most often exhibited mild or absent/questionable severity, respectively. Water from Lake Kivu (used primarily for human cooking water and livestock drinking water) contained fluoride levels that were consistently higher than the maximum threshold (1.5 mg/L) recommended by the World Health Organization. Other sources (borehole and rainwater) were within safe limits. All food, soil and grass samples contained fluoride. The highest levels were observed in porridge (0.5 mg/g) and small fishes (1.05 mg/g). Conclusions Altogether, dental fluorosis was highly prevalent among children and goats on Gihaya Island with various food and water sources contributing a cumulative exposure to fluoride. An immediate and coordinated response across human, animal and water professionals is needed to reduce fluoride exposure within safe limits for island residents

    The Origin and MgCl2–NaCl Variations in an Athalassic Sag Pond: Insights from Chemical and Isotopic Data

    The examination of past and new chemical–isotopic data (2H/1H–18O/16O,11B/10B and87Sr/86Sr ratios) shows the meteoric origin of the Sawa Lake (Muthanna Governorate, Iraq) and its connection with the local aquifers, which feed the lake via the groundwater emerging from its floor through fault systems. The chemical and isotopic evaporation models are traced by geochemical computer codes by using a different composition of some potential inflows to the lake (e.g., the Euphrates River and Dammam aquifer). The main product of the chemical evaporation models is gypsum, as confirmed by the mineralogical examination of the sediment and the surrounding outcrops. A strong18O–2H enrichment is a consequence of the evaporation effect in arid regions; δ18O–Cl models and δ11B = + 23.4‰ exclude the contribution of any seawater-derived fluids. This latter value along with87Sr/86Sr = 0.707989 suggests a mixed origin from the Eocene–Miocene aquifers. The isotope and chemical evaporation paths from the meteorically recharged sources match the lake composition. However, compositional switches from NaCl toward MgCl2occurred in the last decade and are related to post-drought periods, showing that the interaction of the recharging waters with the local soils (Na–Mg exchange and/or the leaching of the top layer salts) have a role in the chemical composition. This demonstrates that the lake is significantly influenced by climatic variations
