Critical Relaxation and Critical Exponents
Dynamic relaxation of the XY model and fully frustrated XY model quenched
from an initial ordered state to the critical temperature or below is
investigated with Monte Carlo methods. Universal power law scaling behaviour is
observed. The dynamic critical exponent and the static exponent are
extracted from the time-dependent Binder cumulant and magnetization. The
results are competitive to those measured with traditional methods
Measurement of the Entropy and Critical Temperature of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas
We report a model-independent measurement of the entropy, energy, and
critical temperature of a degenerate, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms.
The total energy is determined from the mean square cloud size in the strongly
interacting regime, where the gas exhibits universal behavior. The entropy is
measured by sweeping a bias magnetic field to adiabatically tune the gas from
the strongly interacting regime to a weakly interacting regime, where the
entropy is known from the cloud size after the sweep. The dependence of the
entropy on the total energy quantitatively tests predictions of the
finite-temperature thermodynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
Australian Fathers\u27 Study: What influences paternal engagement with antenatal care?
This mixed-methods study explores factors associated with and levels of engagement of fathers in antenatal care. One hundred expectant fathers were recruited from antenatal clinics and community settings in Western Australia. They completed validated questionnaires. Eighty-three percent of expectant fathers reported a lack of engagement with antenatal care. Factors significantly associated with lack of engagement in multivariate analysis were working more than 40 hours a week and lack of adequate consultation by antenatal care staff. In qualitative analysis, 6 themes emerged in association with a lack of engagement. They were role in decision making, time pressures, the observer effect, lack of knowledge, barriers to attendance, and feeling unprepared or anxious. Care providers should involve fathers in consultations to improve paternal engagement
Charge and spin density modulations in semiconductor quantum wires
We investigate static charge and spin density modulation patterns along a
ferromagnet/semiconductor single junction quantum wire in the presence of
spin-orbit coupling. Coherent scattering theory is used to calculate the charge
and spin densities in the ballistic regime. The observed oscillatory behavior
is explained in terms of the symmetry of the charge and spin distributions of
eigenstates in the semiconductor quantum wire. Also, we discuss the condition
that these charge and spin density oscillations can be observed experimentally.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures (low-resolution
