Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Report Involving the Spine and Soft Tissues

    Get PDF
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health concern worldwide, and its incidence is increasing in developed countries, especially among immigrant populations. Extrapulmonary TB with musculoskeletal involvement is often a difficult and delayed diagnosis, as the disease can mimic metastases or infection. We present a case of extrapulmonary TB affecting the spine and soft tissues of a Vietnamese-born patient living in the United States. We discuss the imaging findings associated with extrapulmonary TB of the spine. Familiarity with key imaging features of disease can lead to early suspicion and detection of the disease as well as timely treatment

Karst of the Fireside quadrangle and portions of the Flat Rock and Clyde quadrangles, Ohio

Karst terrain forms by dissolution of carbonate rocks, such as limestone or dolomite, or evaporites, such as gypsum or salt, and is characterized by features including sinkholes, disappearing streams, caves, and springs. Sinkholes (or sinks) are enclosed depressions that do not usually hold water; they often have a “throat” or opening at the bottom where they drain to the subsurface. When a stream flows into a sinkhole, it is known as a disappearing stream or losing stream. Water flowing into the ground can cause solution enlargement of natural fractures in the rock and eventually can grow into caves. In Ohio, a cave is defined as “…a naturally occurring void, cavity, recess, or system of interconnecting passages beneath the surface of the earth or within a cliff or ledge…” The many passageways formed in karst terrain allow for high connectivity between the land surface and the water table. These passageways permit water to bypass soil and rock layers that filter out contaminants. Consequently, when compounds such as fertilizers, pesticides, and waste enter sinkholes, they are rapidly transported to the water table and quickly pollute water wells, streams, and rivers. When water exits these solutional features, a spring is formed. Such springs enable release of these contaminants at the surface. The different types of karst features may pose infrastructure complications; roads, utilities, houses, and other facilities built in karst areas are at risk of subsidence, collapse, or other damage. In order to provide a reference for future planning on both the local and regional scale, the Ohio Geological Survey has produced this map book identifying the known and suspected karst areas in the vicinity of Bellevue, Ohio, including portions of Erie, Huron, Sandusky, and Seneca Counties

Solar UV Forecasts: A Randomized Trial Assessing Their Impact on Adults' Sun-Protection Behavior

    Get PDF
This study examined the effectiveness of solar UV forecasts and supporting communications in assisting adults to protect themselves from excessive weekend sun exposure. The study was conducted in Australia, where 557 adult participants with workplace e-mail and Internet access were randomly allocated to one of three weather forecast conditions: standard forecast (no UV), standard forecast + UV, standard forecast + UV + sun-protection messages. From late spring through summer and early autumn, they were e-mailed weekend weather forecasts late in the working week. Each Monday they were e-mailed a prompt to complete a Web-based questionnaire to report sun-related behavior and any sunburn experienced during the previous weekend. There were no significant differences between weather forecast conditions in reported hat use, sunscreen use, sun avoidance, or sunburn. Results indicate that provision of solar-UV forecasts in weather forecasts did not promote markedly enhanced personal sun-protection practices among the adults surveyed.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Octonionization of three player, two strategy maximally entangled quantum games

We develop an octonionic representation of the payoff function for three player, two strategy, maximally entangled quantum games in order to obtain computationally friendly version of this function. This computational capability is then exploited to analyze and potentially classify the Nash equilibria in the quantum games

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. It has been grown in Morocco for centuries in the region of Taliouine-Taznakht, a region with a great saffron reputation nationally and internationally. It has been used for its culinary, medicinal and cosmetic properties. The objectives of this study are to assess the socio-economic importance of saffron for households of the mountainous areas of this region and to study its role of saffron in poverty and inequality reduction in those areas. We conducted a socio-economic survey among 264 households in six representative rural communities in the region. Saffron is the dominant source of income for these rural households, many of whom are poor. Saffron is a labor intensive crop, and women play a crucial role in the production of saffron. Saffron is a promising way to stimulate local development and help to alleviate poverty and inequality in that region. &nbsp

An overview of Australian exercise and sport science degrees

    Get PDF
Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is a common degree offered at Australian universities, yet there is no systematic overview of this multidisciplinary field of study. This study aimed to determine the broad curriculum content of Australian EXSS degrees by summarizing the units offered, identify most commonly delivered content areas, and capture course information such as work-integrated learning (WIL) requirements and majors offered. Data were gathered through publicly available university course pages, with 30 EXSS courses included and only core units identified. The most common Australian EXSS units were “Exercise Physiology,” “Biomechanics,” “Research Methods and Data Analysis,” “Exercise Prescription and Delivery,” and “Exercise and Sport Psychology.” WIL requirements ranged from 140 to 300 h per course, and five courses offered majors. This study provides an overview of Australian EXSS courses, with the focus on exercise-related components reflecting accreditation requirements. Future research should examine how these courses equip students for the multidisciplinary EXSS industry
