Gamma-ray Luminosity and Photon Index Evolution of FSRQ Blazars and Contribution to the Gamma-ray Background
We present the redshift evolutions and distributions of the gamma-ray
luminosity and photon spectral index of flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) type
blazars, using non-parametric methods to obtain the evolutions and
distributions directly from the data. The sample we use for analysis consists
of almost all FSRQs observed with a greater than approximately 7 sigma
detection threshold in the first year catalog of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space
Telescope's Large Area Telescope, with redshfits as determined from optical
spectroscopy by Shaw et al. We find that FSQRs undergo rapid gamma-ray
luminosity evolution, but negligible photon index evolution, with redshift.
With these evolutions accounted for we determine the density evolution and
luminosity function of FSRQs, and calculate their total contribution to the
extragalactic gamma-ray background radiation, resolved and unresolved, which is
found to be 16(+10/-4)%, in agreement with previous studies.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, Accepted to Ap
Contribution of through the QCD anomaly in exclusive decays and
We compute the decay rates for the exclusive decays and in a QCD-improved factorization framework by including the
contribution from the process through
the QCD anomaly. This method provides an alternative estimate of the
contribution to these decays as
compared to the one using the intrinsic charm content of the
and mesons determined through the decays . The resulting branching ratios are compared with the CLEO
data on and
and predictions are made for the rest.Comment: 16 pages including 4 postscript figures; uses epsfig. The most recent
branching ratios from CLEO, ref. [5], are taken into account. The theory part
is unchange
Methylation of CpG island is not a ubiquitous mechanism for the loss of oestrogen receptor in breast cancer cells.
Methylation has been shown to play an important role in the down-regulation of oestrogen receptors (ER) in breast cancer cells. One critical question that remains unclear is whether methylation can account for the loss of ER expression in cells derived from an ER-positive cell line. This laboratory has established an in vitro cell system using long-term growth of human ER-positive breast cancer cell line T47D in oestrogen-free medium. A clonal cell line, T47D:C4:2 (C4:2), has been characterized. Unlike T47D:A18 (A18), which is a T47D line maintained in oestrogen medium, C4:2 has lost the expression of ER and hormone responsiveness. DNA fingerprinting and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis results confirmed that C4:2 was of the same lineage as A18. These cell lines provide an invaluable system to study the mechanism of ER expression and regulatory pathways leading to hormone-independent growth. The results here clearly demonstrate that the ER CpG island in C4:2 cells remains unmethylated. The loss of ER in the cell line must be due to mechanisms other than methylation. We also evaluated the ER CpG island in the MDA-MB-231:10A (10A) cell line, which is a clone from the MDA-MB-231 line obtained from ATCC and the DNA from the MDA-MB-231 cell line used in the original report. Unlike the cell line from the report, which showed a full methylation pattern in the island, the 10A line only showed a partial methylation pattern in the CpG island. Possible mechanisms pertaining to the heterogeneous methylation pattern of the ER CpG island in the breast cancer cells are discussed
Buckling behavior of Rene 41 tubular panels for a hypersonic aircraft wing
The buckling characteristics of Rene 41 tubular panels for a hypersonic aircraft wing were investigated. The panels were repeatedly tested for buckling characteristics using a hypersonic wing test structure and a universal tension/compression testing machine. The nondestructive buckling tests were carried out under different combined load conditions and in different temperature environments. The force/stiffness technique was used to determine the buckling loads of the panel. In spite of some data scattering, resulting from large extrapolations of the data fitting curve (because of the termination of applied loads at relatively low percentages of the buckling loads), the overall test data correlate fairly well with theoretically predicted buckling interaction curves. Also, the structural efficiency of the tubular panels was found to be slightly higher than that of beaded panels
Improved Measurement of Inclusive Radiative B-meson decays
We report a fully inclusive measurement of the flavor changing neutral
current decay in the energy range 1.7 \GeV\le
E^\mathrm{c.m.s}_\gamma\le 2.8 \GeV, covering 97% of the total spectrum, where
c.m.s is the center of mass system. Using 605\ifb of data, we obtain in the
rest frame of the -meson , where the
errors are statistical, systematic and from the boost correction needed to
transform from the rest frame of the (c.m.s) to that of the
-meson, respectively. We also measure the first and second moments of the
photon energy spectrum as functions of various energy thresholds, which extend
down to 1.7 \GeV. The results are preliminary.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
The muon g-2 discrepancy: errors or new physics?
After a brief review of the muon g-2 status, we discuss hypothetical errors
in the Standard Model prediction that could explain the present discrepancy
with the experimental value. None of them looks likely. In particular, an
hypothetical increase of the hadroproduction cross section in low-energy e^+e^-
collisions could bridge the muon g-2 discrepancy, but is shown to be unlikely
in view of current experimental error estimates. If, nonetheless, this turns
out to be the explanation of the discrepancy, then the 95% CL upper bound on
the Higgs boson mass is reduced to about 130 GeV which, in conjunction with the
experimental 114.4 GeV 95% CL lower bound, leaves a narrow window for the mass
of this fundamental particle.Comment: 4 pages. Invited talk at 16th International Conference on

Two-point motional Stark effect diagnostic for Madison Symmetric Torus
A high-precision spectral motional Stark effect (MSE) diagnostic provides internal magnetic field measurements for Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) plasmas. Currently, MST uses two spatial views-on the magnetic axis and on the midminor (off-axis) radius, the latter added recently. A new analysis scheme has been developed to infer both the pitch angle and the magnitude of the magnetic field from MSE spectra. Systematic errors are reduced by using atomic data from atomic data and analysis structure in the fit. Reconstructed current density and safety factor profiles are more strongly and globally constrained with the addition of the off-axis radius measurement than with the on-axis one only

Application of fracture mechanics and half-cycle method to the prediction of fatigue life of B-52 aircraft pylon components
Stress intensity levels at various parts of the NASA B-52 carrier aircraft pylon were examined for the case when the pylon store was the space shuttle solid rocket booster drop test vehicle. Eight critical stress points were selected for the pylon fatigue analysis. Using fracture mechanics and the half-cycle theory (directly or indirectly) for the calculations of fatigue-crack growth ,the remaining fatigue life (number of flights left) was estimated for each critical part. It was found that the two rear hooks had relatively short fatigue life and that the front hook had the shortest fatigue life of all the parts analyzed. The rest of the pylon parts were found to be noncritical because of their extremely long fatigue life associated with the low operational stress levels
