Using a damper amplification factor to increase energy dissipation in structures
AbstractFluid dampers are an important tool for dissipating unwanted vibrations in a range of engineering structures. This paper examines the effects of amplifying the displacements transferred to a non-linear damper, to increase the effectiveness of the damper in a range of situations commonly encountered in civil engineering structures. These include, (i) the ability to āfine tuneā the required damping for a particular size damper, (ii) the ability to have a set of the same size dampers, but with different amplification factors to achieve a specific damping task, and (iii) to increase the sensitivity of the damper to small movements which effectively extends the range over which the damper works. Through numerical simulations and experimental tests conducted on a non-linear damper, we quantify the potential advantages of adding an amplification factor and the range of parameters where the benefit to this device is significant. The example of a two-storey structure is used as a test case and real-time dynamic substructuring tests are used to assess the complete system performance using a range of different amplification factors. The results show that the structural performance is most improved for frequencies close to resonance and that the amplification factor has an effective limit that for the case considered in this study is of approximately 3. Supporting brace sizing in structures with added linear viscous fluid dampers: A filter design solution
Viscous fluid dampers have proved to be effective in suppressing unwanted vibrations in a range of engineering structures. When dampers are fitted in a structure, a brace is typically used to attach them to the main structure. The stiffness of this brace can significantly alter the effectiveness of the damper, and in structures with multiple dampers, this can be a complex scenario to model. In this paper, we demonstrate that the effects of the brace compliance on the damper performance can be modelled by way of a first-order filter. We use this result to formulate a procedure that calculates the stiffness required by the supporting brace to provide a specified effectiveness of the damping action. The proposed procedure assumes that viscous dampers have been sized in a previous design step based on any optimal methodology in which, as is usually the case, the presence of supporting braces and their dynamic effects were neglected. Firstly considering a one degree-of-freedom system, we show that the proposed method ensures a desired level of damper efficiency for all frequencies within a selected bandwidth. Then the analysis is extended to the case of multi-degree-of-freedom systems to show that the design criteria can be applied in a straightforward and successful manner to more complex structures

Interaction of environmental factors (work) significantly affect the transformation of woman labor decisions of the agricultural sector (as agricultural laborers) to tobacco agroindustry (as a factory employee) of -0.98, and direct effect of the transformation on the level of income of 0.502 and significant. The biggest influence is given by the age of 2 lines, the interaction effect of age to the environment (work) through the transformation of 0,058 with the direction of the negative relationship. Rapid Steel Tooling Via Solid Freeform Fabrication
With increasing part complexity and requirements for long production runs, tooling has
become an expensive process that requires long lead times to manufacture. This lengthens the
amount oftime from "art to part". Rapid tooling via stereolithography (SLA), filled epoxies, etc.
have been stopgap measures to produce limited prototyping runs from (10 to 500 parts). This
gives poor dimensional analysis and does not allow for limited production runs of 1000+ parts.
The method ofproducing prototype tooling with a powdered metal process has been developed
that produces tooling with a hardness greater than 35 HRC and total shrinkage less than 0.5%.
This tooling process manufactures production ready tooling that will perform extended cycle
runs (100,000+). Manufacturing ofthis tooling takes 1 to 2 weeks and will compare favorably
with production grade steel tooling. Originals drawn in 3D CAD can be used to prototype the
master that will allow for the production ofthe rapid metal tool set.

a machined master. For this paper a Sander's Model Maker IIĀ® rapid prototyping machine was
used to fabricate the model. After the model ofthe tool set is made, a silicone rubber negative is
cast around that model. After the silicone rubber model is made, a heated slurry ofmetal
powders and polymers is poured into the mold to create the green tool set. The tool set is left to
cool, and then removed from the silicone rubber mold. The tool set is then debound and sintered

External bias in the model of isolation of communities
We extend a model of community isolation in the d-dimensional lattice onto
the case with an imposed imbalance between birth rates of competing
communities. We give analytical and numerical evidences that in the asymmetric
two-specie model there exists a well defined value of the asymmetry parameter
when the emergence of the isolated (blocked) subgroups is the fastest, i.e. the
characteristic time tc is minimal. This critical value of the parameter depends
only on the lattice dimensionality and is independent from the system size.
Similar phenomenon was observed in the multi-specie case with a geometric
distribution of the birth rates. We also show that blocked subgroups in the
multi-specie case are absent or very rare when either there is a strictly
dominant specie that outnumbers the others or when there is a large diversity
of species. The number of blocked species of different kinds decreases with the
dimension of the multi-specie system.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

We review the work and life of Otto Stern who developed the molecular beam
technique and with its aid laid the foundations of experimental atomic physics.
Among the key results of his research are: the experimental determination of
the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of molecular velocities (1920), experimental
demonstration of space quantization of angular momentum (1922), diffraction of
matter waves comprised of atoms and molecules by crystals (1931) and the

AGN Obscuring Tori Supported by Infrared Radiation Pressure
Explicit 2-d axisymmetric solutions are found to the hydrostatic equilibrium,
energy balance, and photon diffusion equations within obscuring tori around
active galactic nuclei. These solutions demonstrate that infrared radiation
pressure can support geometrically thick structures in AGN environments subject
to certain constraints: the bolometric luminosity must be roughly 0.03--1 times
the Eddington luminosity; and the Compton optical depth of matter in the
equatorial plane should be order unity, with a tolerance of about an order of
magnitude up or down. Both of these constraints are at least roughly consistent
with observations. In addition, angular momentum must be redistributed so that
the fractional rotational support against gravity rises from the inner edge of
the torus to the outer in a manner specific to the detailed shape of the
gravitational potential. This model also predicts that the column densities
observed in obscured AGN should range from about 10^{22} to about 10^{24}

Beyond BAO: improving cosmological constraints from BOSS with measurement of the void-galaxy cross-correlation
We present a measurement of the anisotropic void-galaxy cross-correlation
function in the CMASS galaxy sample of the BOSS DR12 data release. We perform a
joint fit to the data for redshift space distortions (RSD) due to galaxy
peculiar velocities and anisotropies due to the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect,
for the first time using a velocity field reconstruction technique to remove
the complicating effects of RSD in the void centre positions themselves. Fits
to the void-galaxy function give a 1% measurement of the AP parameter
combination at redshift , where
is the angular diameter distance and the Hubble parameter, exceeding the
precision obtainable from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) by a factor of
~3.5 and free of systematic errors. From voids alone we also obtain a 10%
measure of the growth rate, . The parameter
degeneracies are orthogonal to those obtained from galaxy clustering. Combining
void information with that from BAO and galaxy RSD in the same CMASS sample, we
measure (at 0.8% precision),
kmsMpc (1%) and
(4.9%), consistent with cosmic microwave background
(CMB) measurements from Planck. These represent a factor \sim2 improvement in
precision over previous results through the inclusion of void information.
Fitting a flat cosmological constant CDM model to these results in
combination with Planck CMB data, we find up to an 11% reduction in
uncertainties on and compared to use of the corresponding BOSS
consensus values. Constraints on extended models with non-flat geometry and a
