Rapunzel syndrome: A South African variety
Trichobezoars are intraluminal accretions of ingested hair. Rapunzel syndrome is a rare and extreme presentation, with the trichobezoar extending into the small intestine. It is most frequently reported in children and psychiatric patients. We report a South African series of 5 patients who presented with trichobezoars. Each patient was retrospectively reviewed and analysed with regard to background, demographics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, surgical management and complications. Five female patients with a median age of 19 (range 12 - 27) years presented with clinical symptoms, including early satiety, intermittent vomiting with gastric outlet obstruction, abdominal pain and weight loss. The diagnosis was made by endoscopy, abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging, barium meal examination or plain abdominal radiography. Two patients presented with sealed/contained gastric perforations, and 1 patient with a smallbowel perforation. All 5 bezoars, 2 of which consisted entirely of artificial hair extensions, extended into the jejunum, the longest measuring 1.4 m. All were removed by laparotomy. While trichobezoars are a rare entity, they may present with significant complications, such as obstructions and perforations. In view of the infection risk and considerable size of many of these bezoars, an open removal is probably safer than any minimally invasive attempt.S Afr Med J 2018;108(7):559-562
Radial Velocities of Six OB Stars
We present new results from a radial velocity study of six bright OB stars
with little or no prior measurements. One of these, HD 45314, may be a
long-period binary, but the velocity variations of this Be star may be related
to changes in its circumstellar disk. Significant velocity variations were also
found for HD 60848 (possibly related to nonradial pulsations) and HD 61827
(related to wind variations). The other three targets, HD 46150, HD 54879, and
HD 206183, are constant velocity objects, but we note that HD 54879 has
H emission that may originate from a binary companion. We illustrate

Spectroscopic analysis of the B/Be visual binary HR 1847
We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847
spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic
stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the
observed echelle spectra, which cover both the optical and near-IR regions. New
observations of this system used the Ond\v{r}ejov and Rozhen 2-m telescopes and
their coud\'e spectrographs. Radial velocities from individual spectra were
measured and then analysed with the code {\FOTEL} to determine orbital
parameters. The spectroscopic orbit of HR 1847A is presented for the first
time. It is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a B-type primary, a period
of 719.79 days, and a highly eccentric orbit with e=0.7. We confirmed that HR
1847B is a Be star. Its H\alpha emission significantly decreased from 2003 to

Optically Thick Radio Cores of Narrow-Waist Bipolar Nebulae
We report our search for optically thick radio cores in sixteen narrow-waist
bipolar nebulae. Optically thick cores are a characteristic signature of
collimated ionized winds. Eleven northern nebulae were observed with the Very
Large Array (VLA) at 1.3 cm and 0.7 cm, and five southern nebulae were observed
with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 6 cm and 3.6 cm. Two
northern objects, 19W32 and M 1-91, and three southern objects, He 2-25, He
2-84 and Mz 3, were found to exhibit a compact radio core with a rising
spectrum consistent with an ionized jet. Such jets have been seen in M 2-9 and
may be responsible for shaping bipolar structure in planetary nebulae.Comment: 29 pages, accepted for publication in Ap
The Long Period, Massive Binaries HD 37366 and HD 54662: Potential Targets for Long Baseline Optical Interferometry
We present the results from an optical spectroscopic analysis of the massive
stars HD 37366 and HD 54662. We find that HD 37366 is a double-lined
spectroscopic binary with a period of 31.8187 +/- 0.0004 days, and HD 54662 is
also a double lined binary with a much longer period of 557.8 +/- 0.3 days. The
primary of HD 37366 is classified as O9.5 V, and it contributes approximately
two-thirds of the optical flux. The less luminous secondary is a broad-lined,
early B-type main-sequence star. Tomographic reconstruction of the individual
spectra of HD 37366 reveals absorption lines present in each component,
enabling us to constrain the nature of the secondary and physical
characteristics of both stars. Tomographic reconstruction was not possible for
HD 54662; however, we do present mean spectra from our observations that show
that the secondary component is approximately half as bright as the primary.
The observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were fit with model SEDs and
galactic reddening curves to determine the angular sizes of the stars. By
assuming radii appropriate for their classifications, we determine distance
ranges of 1.4 - 1.9 and 1.2 - 1.5 kpc for HD 37366 and HD 54662, respectively.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
A Spectroscopic Study of Field and Runaway OB Stars
Identifying binaries among runaway O- and B-type stars offers valuable
insight into the evolution of open clusters and close binary stars. Here we
present a spectroscopic investigation of 12 known or suspected binaries among
field and runaway OB stars. We find new orbital solutions for five single-lined
spectroscopic binaries (HD 1976, HD 14633, HD 15137, HD 37737, and HD 52533),
and we classify two stars thought to be binaries (HD 30614 and HD 188001) as
single stars. In addition, we reinvestigate their runaway status using our new
radial velocity data with the UCAC2 proper motion catalogs. Seven stars in our
study appear to have been ejected from their birthplaces, and at least three of
these runaways are spectroscopic binaries and are of great interest for future

On the nature of the Be star HR 7409 (7 Vul)
HR 7409 (7 Vul) is a newly identified Be star possibly part of the Gould Belt
and is the massive component of a 69-day spectroscopic binary. The binary
parameters and properties of the Be star measured using high-dispersion spectra
obtained at Ondrejov Observatory and at Rozhen Observatory imply the presence
of a low mass companion (~ 0.5-0.8 M_sun). If the pair is relatively young
(<50-80 Myr), then the companion is a K V star, but, following another, older
evolutionary scenario, the companion is a horizontal-branch star or possibly a
white dwarf star. In the latter scenario, a past episode of mass transfer from
an evolved star onto a less massive dwarf star would be responsible for the
peculiar nature of the present-day, fast-rotating Be star.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
