Sobre Gastrotheca Fissipes (Boulenger, 1888), com a Descrição de uma Nova Espécie (Amphibia, Anura, Amphignathodontidae)

The study of samples of Gastrotheca from the states of Pernambuco, Bahia, and Espírito Santo, Brazil, showed two distinct species currently treated in the literature as Gastrotheca fissipes. Both are large-sized species, with a casqued co-ossified skull, webbing absent in hands and very reduced in feet, morphological characters do not seen in other Brazilian species of Gastrotheca. Nototrema fissipes Boulenger, 1888, was described and figured on basis of only one female collected at Iguarasse (= Igarassú), in the State of Pernambuco; in more recent years, other samples of a Gastrotheca with a broad, casqued, co-ossified skull, were obtained at southern State of Bahia and State of Espírito Santo and referred in literature erroneously as G. fissipes. In this paper, data are given on additional samples of G. fissipes also collected in Pernambuco and the frogs obtained at Espirito Santo and southern Bahia are described as a new species. The two species differ by the head width, posterior edge of casque, and dorsal and lateral color patterns.O estudo de exemplares de Gastrotheca procedentes dos estados de Pernambuco, Bahia e Espírito Santo, Brasil, mostrou que duas espécies distintas estão incluídas na literatura como Gastrotheca fissipes. Trata-se de formas grandes possuidoras de co-ossificação craniana como um capacete e membranas ausentes nas mãos e muito reduzidas nos pés, características não observadas nas demais espécies brasileiras. Nototrema fissipes Boulenger, 1888 foi descrita e figurada com base em uma única fêmea colecionada em Iguarasse (=Igarassú), no Estado de Pernambuco. Em anos mais recentes, outros exemplares de Gastrotheca também com carapaça craniana foram encontrados no sul do Estado da Bahia e no Estado do Espírito Santo e equivocadamente referidos na literatura como sendo G. fissipes. Neste trabalho são apresentados dados sobre exemplares adicionais de G. fissipes obtidos também em Pernambuco e é descrita a forma representada pelos exemplares obtidos no Estado do Espírito Santo e no Sul do Estado da Bahia como uma espécie nova. As duas espécies diferem pela largura da cabeça, forma do bordo posterior do capacete e pelos padrões de colorido dorsal e lateral

An Examination of Morphometric Variations in a Neotropical Toad Population (Proceratophrys cristiceps, Amphibia, Anura, Cycloramphidae)

The species Proceratophrys cristiceps belongs to the genus Proceratophrys within the family Cycloramphidae. These amphibians are found exclusively in South America in the morphoclimatic domain of the semi-arid depression zones in northeastern Brazil known as the Caatinga. We examined intrapopulational variation using univariate and multivariate statistics with traditional and geometric morphometrics, which supported the existence of two morphotypes of this species. Our results indicated significant degrees of variation in skeletal characteristics between some natural populations of this species. Careful analyses of variability levels are fundamental to avoid taxonomic errors, principally in populations that demonstrate characteristics intimately associated with their area of occurrence, as is the case of Proceratophrys cristiceps
