Background. Glufosinate ammonium has a famous delayed complication as respiratory failure, however, delayed cardiogenic complication is not well known. Objectives. The aim of this study is to report a takotsubo cardiomyopathy as a delayed complication of glufosinate ammonium for suicide attempt. Case Report. A 75-year-old woman ingested about 90 mL of Basta, herbicide for suicide attempt at arousal during sleep. She came to our hospital at twelve hours after ingesting. She was admitted to our hospital for fear of delayed respiratory failure. Actually, she felt down to respiratory failure, needing a ventilator with intubation at 20 hours after ingesting. Procedure around respiratory management had smoothly done with no delay. Her vital status had been stable, however, she felt down to circulatory failure and diagnosed as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy at about 41 hours after ingestion. There was no trigger activities or events to evoke mental and physical stresses. Conclusion. We could successfully manage takotsubo cardiomyopathy resulted in circulatory failure in a patient with glufosinate poisoning for suicide attempt. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy should be taken into consideration if circulatory failure is observed for unexplained reasons

"Copyright 2004 by the American Physical Society." publisherSeveral clinical trials have demonstrated that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (ARB) are equally effective in the treatment of chronic heart failure. However, this has not been confirmed for acute cardiac dysfunction. We examined whether ACEI or ARB prevents isoproterenol-induced acute left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in dogs. LV dysfunction induced by a large dose of isoproterenol (1 µg·kg^–1·min^–1, 3-h infusion) was compared in dogs treated with ACEI (temocaprilat) or ARB (olmesartan). Atrial pacing induced a constant heart rate and use of adjustable aortic banding provided a nearly constant afterload. LV systolic function (LV dP/dt, fractional shortening, and ejection fraction) and diastolic function (γ and LV end-diastolic pressure) were significantly deteriorated after isoproterenol infusion. The LV dysfunction was almost totally prevented by ARB but was only partially prevented by ACEI. The partial effect of ACEI was complemented by cotreatment with HOE-140, a bradykinin B_2 receptor antagonist. At baseline, the response to low doses of isoproterenol was significantly attenuated by ACEI but not by ARB, and the ACEI-induced attenuation was totally abolished by cotreatment with HOE-140. The response to isoproterenol was significantly attenuated after 3 h of excess isoproterenol loading, and it was almost completely preserved by ARB but not by ACEI. In conclusion, acute LV dysfunction and β-adrenergic desensitization induced by excess isoproterenol administration were almost totally prevented by ARB but only partially prevented by ACEI. These differences were attributable at least in part to bradykinin pathways activated by ACEI administration in acute LV dysfunction

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of C/SiO2 Composite with Controllable Silica Nanoparticle Size

AC/SiO composite was produced from 3-aminophenol and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) by a synthesis protocol that involved microwave irradiation. This protocol featured simultaneous 3-aminophenol polymerization and TEOS hydrolysis and condensation, which were achieved rapidly in a microwave reactor. The SiO2 component was formed from low-concentration TEOS confined in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles. We demonstrated a control of the SiO2 particle size, ranging from 20 to 90 nm, by varying the 3-aminophenol concentration. The carbon component provided a microporous structure that greatly contributed to the high specific surface area, 375 m2/g, and served as a host for the nitrogen functional groups with a content of 5.34%, 74% of which were pyridinic type. The composite formation mechanism was clarified from time-series scanning electron microscopy images and dynamic light scattering analysis. An understanding of the composite formation mechanism in this protocol will enable the design of composite morphologies for specific applications. This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Numbers 26709061 and 16K13642 and was partly supported by the Center for Functional Nano Oxides at Hiroshima University

Synthesis, characterization, and photovoltaic applications of dithienogermole-dithienylbenzothiadiazole and -dithienylthiazolothiazole copolymers

New dithienogermole-based conjugated polymers were synthesized by the Stille coupling reactions of distannyldithienogermole and dibromoarene, and their photovoltaic properties were studied. These polymers possess low band gaps with broad absorptions covering the 400-800 nm range, and exhibit good film forming properties. Bulk hetero-junction solar cells prepared from blends of these polymers with PC(70)BM exhibit high power conversion efficiency up to 2.38%

Theory of de Haas-van Alphen Effect in Type-II Superconductors

Theory of quasiparticle spectra and the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation in type-II superconductors are developed based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for vortex-lattice states. As the pair potential grows through the superconducting transition, each degenerate Landau level in the normal state splits into quasiparticle bands in the magnetic Brillouin zone. This brings Landau-level broadening, which in turn leads to the extra dHvA oscillation damping in the vortex state. We perform extensive numerical calculations for three-dimensional systems with various gap structures. It is thereby shown that (i) this Landau-level broadening is directly connected with the average gap at H=0 along each Fermi-surface orbit perpendicular to the field H; (ii) the extra dHvA oscillation attenuation is caused by the broadening around each extremal orbit. These results imply that the dHvA experiment can be a unique probe to detect band- and/or angle-dependent gap amplitudes. We derive an analytic expression for the extra damping based on the second-order perturbation with respect to the pair potential for the Luttinger-Ward thermodynamic potential. This formula reproduces all our numerical results excellently, and is used to estimate band-specific gap amplitudes from available data on NbSe_2, Nb_3Sn, and YNi_2B_2C. The obtained value for YNi_2B_2C is fairly different from the one through a specific-heat measurement, indicating presence of gap anisotropy in this material. C programs to solve the two-dimensional Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are available at http://phys.sci.hokudai.ac.jp/~kita/index-e.html .Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure

Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality due to a fall while using an abdominal roller: A report of two cases

    No full text
Abstract Background In recent years, various home‐use health devices have gained popularity. The abdominal roller is one of these. Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality is known to occur even with relatively minor injuries, but there are few reports of such injuries caused by a roller. Case Presentation Two cases of spinal cord injuries caused by a roller are reported. In both cases, injuries occurred during the standing rollout by a patient in an inebriated state, and the patients were rushed to an emergency department. Conclusion Because the use of abdominal rollers may result in extremely serious disabilities, it is necessary to emphasize the appropriate use of such equipment
