    Extracting an Informative Latent Representation of High-Dimensional Galaxy Spectra

    To understand the fundamental parameters of galaxy evolution, we investigated the minimum set of parameters that explain the observed galaxy spectra in the local Universe. We identified four latent variables that efficiently represent the diversity of high-dimensional galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Additionally, we constructed meaningful latent representation using conditional variational autoencoders trained with different permutations of galaxy physical properties, which helped us quantify the information that these traditionally used properties have on the reconstruction of galaxy spectra. The four parameters suggest a view that complex SED population models with a very large number of parameters will be difficult to constrain even with spectroscopic galaxy data. Through an Explainable AI (XAI) method, we found that the region below 5000\textup{\AA} and prominent emission lines ([O II], [O III], and Hα\alpha) are particularly informative for predicting the latent variables. Our findings suggest that these latent variables provide a more efficient and fundamental representation of galaxy spectra than conventionally considered galaxy physical properties.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted by NeurIPS 202

    HASC2011corpus: Towards the Common Ground of Human Activity Recognition

However, most of research on human activity recognition so far is based on small number of subjects, and non-public data. To overcome the situation, we have gathered 4897 accelerometer data with 116 subjects and compose them as HASC2011corpus. In the field of pattern recognition, it is very important to evaluate and to improve the recognition methods by using the same dataset as a common ground. We make the HASC2011corpus into public for the research community to use it as a common ground of the Human Activity Recognition. We also show several facts and results of obtained from the corpus

    Dynamics of cellular immune responses in the acute phase of dengue virus infection.

    In this study, we examined the dynamics of cellular immune responses in the acute phase of dengue virus (DENV) infection in a marmoset model. Here, we found that DENV infection in marmosets greatly induced responses of CD4/CD8 central memory T and NKT cells. Interestingly, the strength of the immune response was greater in animals infected with a dengue fever strain than in those infected with a dengue hemorrhagic fever strain of DENV. In contrast, when animals were re-challenged with the same DENV strain used for primary infection, the neutralizing antibody induced appeared to play a critical role in sterilizing inhibition against viral replication, resulting in strong but delayed responses of CD4/CD8 central memory T and NKT cells. The results in this study may help to better understand the dynamics of cellular and humoral immune responses in the control of DENV infection

    FGF2 SUPPRESSED CCL11 EXPRESSION IN HUMAN DENTAL PULP-DERIVED MSCs

    The regulation of the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) programming mechanism promises great success in regenerative medicine. Tissue regeneration has been associated not only with the differentiation of MSCs, but also with the microenvironment of the stem cell niche that involves various cytokines and immune cells in the tissue regeneration site. In the present study, fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), the principal growth factor for tooth development, dental pulp homeostasis and dentin repair, was reported to affect the expression of cytokines in human dental pulp‑derived MSCs. FGF2 significantly inhibited the expression of chemokine C‑C motif ligand 11 (CCL11) in a time‑ and dose‑dependent manner in the SDP11 human dental pulp‑derived MSC line. This inhibition was diminished following treatment with the AZD4547 FGF receptor (FGFR) inhibitor, indicating that FGF2 negatively regulated the expression of CCL11 in SDP11 cells. Furthermore, FGF2 activated the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen‑activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), extracellular signal‑regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and c‑Jun N‑terminal kinases (JNK) in SDP11 cells. The mechanism of the FGFR‑downstream signaling pathway was then studied using the SB203580, U0126 and SP600125 inhibitors for p38 MAPK, ERK1/2, and JNK, respectively. Interestingly, only treatment with SP600125 blocked the FGF2‑mediated suppression of CCL11. The present results suggested that FGF2 regulated the expression of cytokines and suppressed the expression of CCL11 via the JNK signaling pathway in human dental pulp‑derived MSCs. The present findings could provide important insights into the association of FGF2 and CCL11 in dental tissue regeneration therapy
