    No full text
A research purpose consisted of study of level and character of the personal interest of students of senior courses in application for them of the special individual educational trainings programs professionally-applied physical self-preparation. 69 students took part in an experiment. It is set that students have a high level of the personal interest in application of the educational trainings programs for development of physical merit, which have a decision value for successful professional activity in the future. A desire to be well-off to implementation of difficult production tasks and to the effective actions in emergency situations served as main incentive reason here

X-ray generator based on Compton scattering

    No full text
Nowadays, the sources of the X-rays based on a storage ring with low beam energy and Compton scattering of intense laser beam are under development in several laboratories. In the paper the state-of-art in development and construction of cooperative project of a Kharkov advanced X-ray source NESTOR based on electron storage ring with beam energy 43–225 MeV and Nd:YAG laser are described. The layout of the facility is presented and latest results are described. The designed lattice includes 4 dipole magnets with combined focusing functions, 20 quadrupole magnets and 19 sextupoles with correcting components of magnetic field. At present, a set of quadrupole magnet is under manufacture and bending magnet reconstruction is going on. The main parameters of developed vacuum system providing residual gas pressure in the storage ring vacuum chamber up to 10-9 Torr are presented. The basic parameters of the X-ray source laser and injection systems are presented. The facility is going to be in operation from the middle of 2006 and generated X-ray flux is expected to be of about 1013 phot/s

Phylloplane Biodiversity and Activity in the City at Different Distances from the Traffic Pollution Source

The phylloplane is an integrated part of green infrastructure which interacts with plant health. Taxonomic characterization of the phylloplane with the aim to link it to ecosystem functioning under anthropogenic pressure is not sufficient because only active microorganisms drive biochemical processes. Activity of the phylloplane remains largely overlooked. We aimed to study the interactions among the biological characteristics of the phylloplane: taxonomic diversity, functional diversity and activity, and the pollution grade. Leaves of Betula pendula were sampled in Moscow at increasing distances from the road. For determination of phylloplane activity and functional diversity, a MicroResp tool was utilized. Taxonomic diversity of the phylloplane was assessed with a combination of microorganism cultivation and molecular techniques. Increase of anthropogenic load resulted in higher microbial respiration and lower DNA amount, which could be viewed as relative inefficiency of phylloplane functioning in comparison to less contaminated areas. Taxonomic diversity declined with road vicinity, similar to the functional diversity pattern. The content of Zn in leaf dust better explained the variation in phylloplane activity and the amount of DNA. Functional diversity was linked to variation in nutrient content. The fraction of pathogenic fungi of the phylloplane was not correlated with any of the studied elements, while it was significantly high at the roadsides. The bacterial classes Gammaproteobacteria and Cytophagia, as well as the Dothideomycetes class of fungi, are exposed to the maximal effect of distance from the highway. This study demonstrated the sensitivity of the phylloplane to road vicinity, which combines the effects of contaminants (mainly Zn according to this study) and potential stressful air microclimatic conditions (e.g., low relative air humidity, high temperature, and UV level). Microbial activity and taxonomic diversity of the phylloplane could be considered as an additional tool for bioindication. © 2022 by the author. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

Anthropogenic soils and landscapes of European Russia: Summer school from sea to sea—A didactic prototype

Field excursions and trainings are considered a key component of education programs in soil and environmental sciences. They allow mastering students’ practical skills in sampling and onsite assessments and improve understanding of ecosystem integrity and complexity. Urbanization has a substantial impact on soil properties and functions; however, field courses focused on urban soils are rare. We present a didactic prototype and the outcomes of the “Monitoring, Modeling, and Management of Urban Green Infrastructure and Soils (3MUGIS)” summer school—the first educational tour observing anthropogenic soils and landscapes along the bioclimatic gradient in European Russia, from tundra to dry steppes. Didactic learning was based on a studying-by-doing approach; students were involved in environmental assessment in multiple regions varying in climatic and socioeconomic features. Considering the high spatial heterogeneity of urban ecosystems, we used express techniques (portable X-ray fluorescence, infrared gas analyzers) for onsite soil analysis at multiple replicas. The data collected were discussed with local and international experts from Russia, Germany, the United States, and France in the context of regional environmental problems (e.g., pollution, soil degradation, and urban expansion). Students discovered zonal changes in vegetation (e.g., increasing tree height and diversity from north taiga to forest steppes) and soil properties (e.g., a gradual increase in pH and changes in soil organic C), as well as urban-specific processes and features (e.g., urban heat island effect or soil artifacts). The overall student feedback was very positive (50.8% excellent, 36% good); some specific organizational issues will be addressed for future 3MUGIS summer schools. © 2020 The Authors. Status of NESTOR

NSC KIPT proposed to construct a new X-ray and soft UV source NESTOR with a 40 - 225 MeV electron storage ring in Kharkov. NESTOR is a new type radiation source on the base of Compton scattering and a storage ring. Electrons are injected in the storage ring at 100 MeV and ramped up to final energy of 225 MeV. So, using interaction angle 10 Deg and 150 Deg, the facility covers operation energy range of radiation from soft UV trough synchrotron radiation from bending magnets up to hard X-ray radiation through Compton scattering (.apprx.1 eV .apprx.1 MeV). It is supposed that stored electron beam current will be of about 200 mA. Along with use of Nd:Yag laser of 10 W av. power which was developed by High-Q laser firm and optical resonator with accumulation gain of about 1000 it allows to provide X-ray radiation flux up to 1011 phot/s. NESTOR is the cooperative facility and its development is supported by Ukrainian government and NATO SfP project #977982. It is supposed that NESTOR will be in operation by mid-2007 yr. The status of the project and main facility systems are described in the report
