    Concentration-Dependent Fluorescence Color Tuning of the Difluoroboron Avobenzone Complex in Polymer Films

    We have investigated concentration-dependent fluorescence color tuning of BF2AVB in a poly(methyl methacrylate) film. BF2AVB exhibits a color change from purple-blue to orange via green, and then crystals segregate from the polymer matrix. We analyzed the fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectral change as a function of the BF2AVB concentration in the film. We also obtained fluorescence microscope images to confirm the miscibility and crystallization properties in the films. This originates from the aggregated state formed in the polymer matrix depending on the stacking structure of the parallel (B-phase), antiparallel (G-phase), and amorphous states. The emissive species change with increasing BF2AVB concentration. The polymer matrix isolation method enables not only directly visualization of the dynamics of the crystal formation process and Ostwald’s rule of stages by fluorescence changes, but it also enables device fabrication, such as fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes and luminescent solar concentrators.ArticleBulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan.90(6):709-713(2017)journal articl

    Femtosecond X-ray emission study of the spin cross-over dynamics in haem proteins

    In haemoglobin (consisting of four globular myoglobin-like subunits), the change from the low-spin (LS) hexacoordinated haem to the high spin (HS) pentacoordinated domed form upon ligand detachment and the reverse process upon ligand binding, represent the transition states that ultimately drive the respiratory function. Visible-ultraviolet light has long been used to mimic the ligand release from the haem by photodissociation, while its recombination was monitored using time-resolved infrared to ultraviolet spectroscopic tools. However, these are neither element- nor spin-sensitive. Here we investigate the transition state in the case of Myoglobin-NO (MbNO) using femtosecond Fe Kalpha and Kbeta non-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) at an X-ray free-electron laser upon photolysis of the Fe-NO bond. We find that the photoinduced change from the LS (S = 1/2) MbNO to the HS (S = 2) deoxy-myoglobin (deoxyMb) haem occurs in ca. 800 fs, and that it proceeds via an intermediate (S = 1) spin state. The XES observables also show that upon NO recombination to deoxyMb, the return to the planar MbNO ground state is an electronic relaxation from HS to LS taking place in ca. 30 ps. Thus, the entire ligand dissociation-recombination cycle in MbNO is a spin cross-over followed by a reverse spin cross-over process

    The effect of once-yearly zoledronic acid on hip structural and biomechanical properties derived using computed tomography (CT) in Japanese women with osteoporosis

    The effects of zoledronic acid on hip structural and biomechanical properties were evaluated in Japanese patients with osteoporosis by computed tomography (CT). The subjects included in this study were a subset of female subjects (zoledronic acid group, 49 subjects; placebo group, 53 subjects) in the phase 3 trial (ZONE study) who were available for multi-detector row CT (MDCT) scanning. Eligible subjects were those diagnosed with primary osteoporosis based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Primary Osteoporosis (2000) by the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research and who had between one and four fractured vertebrae located between the fourth thoracic vertebra and the fourth lumbar vertebra. The subjects received a once-yearly intravenous infusion of zoledronic acid 5 mg or placebo for two years. CT data were obtained at baseline and at 12 and 24 months later and analyzed under blinded conditions. The results demonstrated that once-yearly intravenous infusion of zoledronic acid improved volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), cortical bone geometry parameters, and CT-derived biomechanical parameters at the femoral neck, intertrochanteric region, and shaft; particularly at the intertrochanteric region, significant improvements in cortical bone geometry parameters and CT-derived biomechanical parameters, compared with those in the placebo group, were detectable early, at 12 months. The present data suggest that zoledronic acid has a possibility to reduce the risk of hip fractures in Japanese patients with osteoporosis

    Quality of life of children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their parents during the COVID-19 pandemic : a 1-year follow-up study

    This study aimed to reveal changes in the quality of life (QOL) of children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their parents, and the interaction between their QOL and parental mental state during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Eighty-nine school-aged children and parents participated in surveys in May 2020 (T1) and May 2021 (T2). The parents completed questionnaires that assessed their QOL, depression, parenting stress, and living conditions. Children's temporary mood status was evaluated using the self-reported visual analog scale (VAS). Children's QOL and VAS at T2 were higher than their QOL at T1. Parents' QOL at T2 was lower than their QOL at T1. Severe parental depression at T1 had a synergistic effect on severe parenting stress and severe depressive state at T2. Additionally, children's high QOL at T1 had a synergistic effect on low parenting stress and children's high QOL at T2. Furthermore, children's low VAS scores and parents' low QOL at T2 were associated with deterioration of family economic status. Children and parents' QOL changed during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Improvement in children's QOL was influenced by reduced maternal depressive symptoms. Public support for parental mental health is important to avoid decreasing QOL.Peer reviewe

    Augmentation of Positive Valence System–Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by Inaudible High-Frequency Sounds for Anhedonia : A Trial Protocol for a Pilot Study

    Importance Recent conceptualizations in Research Domain Criteria have indicated that anhedonia, 1 of 2 core symptoms of depression, which can be treatment resistant, is associated with deficits in the positive valence system, and inaudible high-frequency sound therapy has been shown to enhance reward-related brain circuitry. Hence, cognitive behavioral therapy focusing on the positive valence system enhanced with sound therapy could have a synergistic effect on anhedonia.Objective To test the augmentation effect of inaudible high-frequency sounds on the efficacy of positive valence system–focused cognitive behavioral therapy to treat anhedonia.Design, Setting, and Participants In this individual-level allocation, exploratory, single-center randomized superiority pilot trial, patients, therapists, and evaluators will be masked to intervention or placebo assignment. The trial will take place at a national psychiatric referral hospital in Tokyo, Japan, among 44 adult patients with clinically significant anhedonia and moderate to severe depression. Outcomes will be analyzed following the intent-to-treat principle using a repeated-measures mixed model.Intervention The intervention group will participate in 8 weekly sessions of positive valence system–focused cognitive behavioral therapy with in-session exposure to an inaudible high-frequency sound; the comparison group will undergo cognitive behavioral therapy with in-session exposure to a placebo sound.Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome is anhedonia assessed using the self-reported Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale. The secondary outcome is anhedonia assessed using the clinician-administered version of the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale.Discussion Recruitment for this study began in May 2018, and the projected date of final allocation is January 2020. A total of 21 eligible patients were registered for participation as of May 30, 2019. To date, treatments for depression do not guarantee clinically successful outcomes. This pilot trial will provide preliminary evidence of the augmentation effect of high-frequency inaudible sounds on cognitive behavioral therapy for anhedonia. Overall, exposure to an inaudible high-frequency sounds does not require attentional or cognitive effort from either patients or therapists; therefore, results from a future confirmative trial could indicate that cognitive behavioral therapy can be augmented in an effortless manner

    Japanese are increasingly searching for recipes online when they cook. At many recipe site, users can search for and contribute recipes. However, such recipe sites often fail to provide detailed nutritional information. In this study, registered dietitians evaluated the results of a score used by a cooking group. the score involved the number of recipes used, within one week, of grain dishes, main dishes (fish and meat), side dishes(vegetables), fruits, milk and others (juice and sweets). The score of grain dishes, main dishes, side dishes, fruits and milk was lower than the ideal score provided by the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top. These results indicate that it is necessary to improve the selection of meals by a menu management system
