Importance of GLUT Transporters in Disease Diagnosis and Treatment

    Get PDF
Facilitative sugar transporters (GLUTs) are the primary method of sugar uptake in all mammalian cells. There are 14 different types of those transmembrane proteins, but they transport only a handful of substrates, mainly glucose and fructose. This overlap and redundancy contradict the natural tendency of cells to conserve energy and resources, and has led researchers to hypothesize that different GLUTs partake in more metabolic roles than just sugar transport into cells. Understanding those roles will lead to better therapeutics for a wide variety of diseases and disorders. In this review we highlight recent discoveries of the role GLUTs play in different diseases and disease treatments

Review on gamification in children computer interaction (CCI) for persona modelling

    Get PDF
Human Computer Interaction (HCI) plays an important role in connecting humans and computers. Many studies conducted to find better alternatives to improve communication between humans and computers. Various frameworks, catalogue and models revised to complement the lack of existing ideas. The growing technology is increasingly being used by not only adults but also children. However, many applications developed do not fully emphasize the use of HCI suitable for children. Thus, Children Computer Interaction (CCI) created to meet the specific needs of children. Yet, there are still many CCI weaknesses being improved to overcome various problems from time to time. One of the ideas presented is through gamification, which is fun and enjoyable in accordance with the nature of the children. Still, the use of gamification is not as simple as adding some game elements into children's apps, but wider to ensure success in achieving the objectives of the developed application. One way that matter is through the use of user-centered design-persona model. So, this paper reviewed the use of current HCI/CCI, gamification and modified the previously proposed design principles in HCI for children into interview questions for data collection which will be analyzed later to create persona model for future work

Studies On Side Effect Profile Of Treated Hypertensives On Selected Pharmacotherapy

Hypertension is a major public health problem because of its consequences. Its treatment is crucial and goals include to decrease ~orbidity and mortality associated with hypertension by decreaSing blood pressure using drugs that have good tolerance, dosing convenience and low cost. As many antihypertensives are now available, it is important to choose the most appropriate drug in terms of efficacy and with least side effect in order to improve compliance and the patient's quality of life. In HUSM, metoprolol is a widely used. Its metabolism is mediated by the polymorphic debrisoquinehydroxylase that exhibits large inter ethnic difference. As most of its adverse reactions could be due to excessive plasma concentrations, its use among our local population may therefore be associated with adverse effects due to reduced capacity of the local population to metabolise the drug. The objedives of this study were therefore to investigate the use of metoprolol in the treatment of hypertension in relation to the incidence of adverse drug reactions it caused. We would also determine whether patients who experienced adverse reactions suffered reduced quality of life. As controls, we used patients who received enalapril or enalapril combined with metoprolol in the treatment of their hypertension

Virgin coconut oil: emerging functional food oil

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is growing in popularity as functional food oil and the public awareness of it is increasing. It is expected that VCO will experience a dramatic growth in the market. The introduction of VCO has open up new research that basically reveals new things besides what has already been known on commercial coconut oil. This paper mainly discusses on some of the findings associated with VCO up to date. Physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, clinical and authentication studies of VCO were some of the topics addressed in this review

Perceptions and attitudes towards Covid-19 vaccines:Narratives from members of the UK public

    Get PDF
Aim: The aim of the paper is to enhance understanding of how members of the public make sense of the Covid-19 vaccines and the factors influencing their attitudes towards such artefacts of pandemic governance. Methods: The paper draws on 23 online in-depth interviews with members of the UK public and builds on relevant literature to examine participants’ perceptions of the benefits and risks of Covid-19 vaccines, the sources that have shaped their attitudes, and the level of trust they have towards the government’s handling of the pandemic through vaccines. Results:The findings indicate that participants generally felt that the benefits of having the vaccine outweigh the risks and that Covid-19 vaccines are a crucial mechanism for enabling society to return to normal. Vaccine acceptance was, for some, strongly linked to a sense of social responsibility and the duty to protect others. However, some participants expressed concerns towards the side effects of Covid-19 vaccines and their perceived potential impact on fertility and DNA makeup. Participants used various sources of information to learn about Covid-19 vaccines and understand their function, benefits and risks. The majority of participants criticised the government’s response during the early stages of the pandemic yet felt positive about the vaccine rollout. Conclusion:Like any other vaccination programme, the success of the Covid-19 immunisation campaigns does not only depend on the efficacy of the vaccines themselves or the ability to secure access to them, but also on a myriad of other factors which include public compliance and trust in governments and health authorities. To support an effective immunisation campaign that is capable of bringing the pandemic to an end, governments need to understand public concerns, garner trust, and devise adequate strategies for engaging the public and building more resilient societies. <br/

Nurses’ Attitudes and Preferences towards usage of Electronic Medical Records

Electronic Medical records document the treatment plan and patient care. This study intends to identify trained nurses' reception toward using EMR in the wards. A non-experimental cross-sectional survey covered the multi-discipline area. A stratified random sampling method in which the population in this research consisted of n= 138 trained nurses. Results found that the trained nurses tended to document the data at the nurse's station compared to the bedside entry. It's also shown that the demographics variable significantly correlated with attitude domains. Hence with the research results, it is envisaged to benefit the nurses and organization and hopefully can become the catalyst for the Ministry of Health in further improving and elevating the system throughout all hospitals in Malaysia. The work satisfaction among nurses is essential in a healthcare system. Nurse satisfaction may refer to the motivation to stay in the nursing profession and the organization in which they are satisfied with. The study aims to determine the level of work satisfaction among Intensive Care nurses and examined the relationship between Herzberg’s motivation and hygiene factors. The study used a quantitative design with a theoretical framework based on Herzberg’s theory.  A total of 218 nurses from the Intensive Care Unit were selected.  The results showed that overall, of the nurses had a moderate level of work satisfaction.  Keywords: Work satisfaction, motivation, hygiene, nurses eISSN: 2398-4287© 2021. Discover Mathematics on Mobile Devices using Gaming Approach

    Get PDF
AbstractMobile device has become a common gadget among the society. The once known only for the wealthy, the device allows people to communicate, work and play. Playing mobile games in mobile devices has become a trend as it can be played anywhere, anytime. Mobile device has properties like portability, connectivity and social interactivity that make it a preferred platform for learning. Hence, the usage of mobile devices can be expanded to mobile learning, where the learning environment is not restricted in classroom only. Computer games can also be highly effective in increasing children's learning and enjoyments of mathematics. By combining the fun factor of mobile games, the flexibility of mobile learning and the benefits of games, mobile educational games was developed. This paper discusses the model for the development of a mobile educational game for primary one mathematics education. The model describes the components that are required for the development of a mobile learning. The components for the model are the learning theories, learning approach, gaming approach, and the delivery medium. The prototype development process combines the instructional systems design and the game development approach. The developed prototype has been successfully tested using the functionality test which tested the govern on stability, correctness of game mechanics and integrity of game assets. The result showed that learning Mathematics on the mobile devices through gaming approach is possible and can become a promising alternative learning approach
