    The University of Tokyo forests and forest science education in Japan

    In-forest teaching is a vital element of forest science education at university level, and university forests play a critical role in this. In Japan, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) owns the oldest university forest, which was established in 1894. This paper outlines how the University of Tokyo Forests (UTF) provide in-forest education for forest science. The UTF consist of seven branch stations with a total area of over 32,000 ha. Third- and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in forest science attend field courses in these forests. Same undergraduate and graduate students are affiliated with the UTF, where they conduct field studies for their graduate theses. Since 2005, the UTF have expanded their educational activities by offering university-wide hands-on experience seminars with field experience for first- and second-year undergraduate students, although these courses are open to all students studying at UTokyo

    Functions of post-conflict bystander affiliations toward aggressors and victims in bottlenose dolphins

    Post-conflict affiliations initiated by bystanders (bystander affiliation) toward aggressors or victims have been suggested to represent the function of conflict management in some social living species. However, the function of bystander affiliations toward aggressors and victims has not been examined in marine mammals. In the present study, we investigated the function of bystander affiliations to aggressors and victims in bottlenose dolphins: self-protection, the substitute of reconciliation, social facilitation and tension relief of opponents. These bystander affiliations did not reduce post-conflict attacks by former opponents against group members. Bystander affiliation to aggressors tended to be performed by a bystander who had an affiliative relationship with the aggressor but not with the victim. Bystander affiliation to victims also tended to be initiated by a bystander who had an affiliative relationship with the victim but not the aggressor and was close to former opponents at the end of aggressions. Affiliation among group members who stayed near former opponents during aggressions did not increase after aggressions compared to that under control conditions. Renewed aggressions between former opponents decreased after bystander affiliations in our previous study. Bystanders who showed social closeness to former opponents may initiate bystander affiliation toward their affiliative former opponents because they may feel emotion, such as anxiety and excitement, of former opponents. Bystander affiliation toward aggressors and victims may function as tension relief between former opponents. Bystanders of bottlenose dolphins, who may have a relaxed dominant style, might initiate post-conflict affiliation to affiliative individuals unaffected by the dominance relationships among them, unlike despotic specie

    Development of a Wireless Inertial Measurement System for Pitching Motion Analysis

    Abstract. This paper presents a wireless inertial measurement system to analyze three-dimensional (3D) pitching movement of baseball. Developed wireless inertial measurement unit (WIMU) sizes 43.7×45.2×25.7 [mm], weighs 48 [g] including Lithium-Ion battery, and consists of two types of 3D accelerometers, two types of 3D gyroscopes, release sensor, a microcontroller (MCU), flash memory, and an RF module. Synchronization of start and completion of measurement procedure for plural WIMUs are wirelessly controlled by a host computer. Three-dimensional pitching form of upper limb and trunk is produced by the numerical integration of the acceleration and angular velocity. The experimental results show that 3D posture, trajectory and joint torque in overhand and sidearm throwing are successfully estimated using the proposed system

    Mechanism of delayed seed germination caused by high temperature during grain filling in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

    High temperature during grain filling considerably reduces yield and quality in rice (Oryza sativa L.); however, how high temperature affects seed germination of the next generation is not yet well understood. Here, we report that seeds from plants exposed to high temperature during the grain filling stage germinated significantly later than seeds from unstressed plants. This delay remained even after dormancy release treatments, suggesting that it was not due to primary seed dormancy determined during grain filling. In imbibed embryos of heat-stressed seeds, expression of abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis genes (OsNCEDs) was higher than in those of control seeds, whereas that of ABA catabolism genes (OsABA8′OHs) was lower. In the aleurone layer, despite no change in GA signaling as evidenced by no effect of heat stress on OsGAMYB gene expression, the transcripts of α-amylase genes OsAmy1C, OsAmy3B, and OsAmy3E were significantly down-regulated in heat-stressed seeds in comparison with controls. Changes in promoter methylation levels were consistent with transcriptional changes of ABA catabolism-related and α-amylase genes. These data suggest that high temperature during grain filling results in DNA methylation of ABA catabolism-related and α-amylase gene promoters, delaying germination of heat-stressed seeds

    A case of cardiac sarcoidosis masquerading as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy awaiting heart transplant

    SummaryWe report a case of 45-year-old man, who was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and presented with right ventricular (RV) enlargement with a global decrease in RV contractility accompanied by impairment of left ventricular function. He was placed on the heart transplant waiting list. Endomyocardial biopsy from RV septal wall did not show any evidence of sarcoidosis or inflammatory change. Four years after he was put on the heart transplant waiting list, a computed tomography chest scan for the purpose of anatomical evaluation for coronary sinus prior to biventricular pacing lead implantation incidentally showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, which suggested the possibility of sarcoidosis. Biopsy of the inguinal lymph node pathologically was consistent with sarcoidosis. The 2[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography scanning (FDG-PET) demonstrated intense uptake in the myocardium, and the patient was finally diagnosed as having cardiac sarcoidosis. After steroid treatment, the abnormal FDG-PET uptake disappeared. The patient therefore represented a case of cardiac sarcoidosis masquerading as ARVC. It should be recognized that RV involvement is one of the manifestations in cardiac sarcoidosis

    Postmortem Quantitative Analysis of Prion Seeding Activity in the Digestive System

    Human prion diseases are neurodegenerative disorders caused by prion protein. Although infectivity was historically detected only in the central nervous system and lymphoreticular tissues of patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, recent reports suggest that the seeding activity of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease prions accumulates in various non-neuronal organs including the liver, kidney, and skin. Therefore, we reanalyzed autopsy samples collected from patients with sporadic and genetic human prion diseases and found that seeding activity exists in almost all digestive organs. Unexpectedly, activity in the esophagus reached a level of prion seeding activity close to that in the central nervous system in some CJD patients, indicating that the safety of endoscopic examinations should be reconsidered

    Blood Pressure and Arterial Stiffness

    Background—The difference in the predictive ability of the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and its stiffness index β-transformed value (β-baPWV, ie, baPWV adjusted for the pulse pressure) for the development of pathophysiological abnormalities related to cardiovascular disease or future occurrence of cardiovascular disease was examined. Methods and Results—In study 1, a 7-year prospective observational study in cohorts of 3274 men and 3490 men, the area under the curve in the receiver operator characteristic curve analysis was higher for baPWV than for β-baPWV for predicting the development of hypertension (0.73, 95% CI=0.70 to 0.75 versus 0.59, 95% CI=0.56 to 0.62; P<0.01) and/or the development of retinopathy (0.78, 95% CI=0.73 to 0.82 versus 0.66, 95% CI=0.60 to 0.71; P<0.01) by the end of the study period. During study 2, a 3-year observation period on 511 patients with coronary artery disease, 72 cardiovascular events were confirmed. The C statistics of both markers for predicting the development of cardiovascular events were similar. Conclusions—Stiffness index β transformation of the baPWV may attenuate the significance of the baPWV as a risk marker for development of pathophysiological abnormalities related to cardiovascular disease in male subjects

    Tumor-containing CEA in Colon Cancers

    Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum and fresh cancer tissue taken at surgery was measured and analyzed in terms of the disease stage. The CEA level in serum (s-CEA ) has become higher with advance in the disease stage. However, in stage V it was lowered as well as CEA level in cancer mass (ca-CEA). It is suggested that S-CEA is influenced by cancer invasion into the vessel wall, tumor necrosis and/or degeneration which ca-CEA may well be migrated from the tumor cells
