Operation of transition edge sensors in a resistance locked loop
We propose to operate a superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) using a
different type of biasing, in which the resistance of the TES is kept constant
by means of feedback on the bias voltage and is independent of the incoming
signal power. By combining a large negative electrothermal feedback with a load
independent resistance, this approach can significantly linearise the response
of the detector in the large signal limit. The electrothermal feedback is
enhanced in comparison with the commonly applied voltage biasing, which further
increases the speed of the detector. Furthermore, in frequency domain
multiplexed (FDM) readout, the sinusoidal bias voltages for each TES can be
generated cryogenically with the readout SQUIDs.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observations of Magnetic Activity in Ultracool Dwarfs. IV. The Active, Young Binary NLTT 33370 AB (=2MASS J13142039+1320011)
We present multi-epoch simultaneous radio, optical, H{\alpha}, UV, and X-ray
observations of the active, young, low-mass binary NLTT 33370 AB (blended
spectral type M7e). This system is remarkable for its extreme levels of
magnetic activity: it is the most radio-luminous ultracool dwarf (UCD) known,
and here we show that it is also one of the most X-ray luminous UCDs known. We
detect the system in all bands and find a complex phenomenology of both flaring
and periodic variability. Analysis of the optical light curve reveals the
simultaneous presence of two periodicities, 3.7859 0.0001 and 3.7130
0.0002 hr. While these differ by only ~2%, studies of differential
rotation in the UCD regime suggest that it cannot be responsible for the two
signals. The system's radio emission consists of at least three components:
rapid 100% polarized flares, bright emission modulating periodically in phase
with the optical emission, and an additional periodic component that appears
only in the 2013 observational campaign. We interpret the last of these as a
gyrosynchrotron feature associated with large-scale magnetic fields and a cool,
equatorial plasma torus. However, the persistent rapid flares at all rotational
phases imply that small-scale magnetic loops are also present and reconnect
nearly continuously. We present an SED of the blended system spanning more than
9 orders of magnitude in wavelength. The significant magnetism present in NLTT
33370 AB will affect its fundamental parameters, with the components' radii and
temperatures potentially altered by ~+20% and ~-10%, respectively. Finally, we
suggest spatially resolved observations that could clarify many aspects of this
system's nature.Comment: emulateapj, 22 pages, 15 figures, ApJ in press; v2: fixes low-impact

Observation of small scale structure using sextupole lensing
Weak gravitational lensing seeks to determine shear by measuring induced
quadrupole (elliptical) shapes in background galaxy images. Small impact
parameter (a few kpc) gravitational lensing by foreground core masses between 2
10^{9} and 2 10^{12} M_\odot will additionally induce a sextupole shape with
the quadrupole and sextupole minima aligned. This correlation in relative
orientation of the quadrupole and sextupole provides a sensitive method to
identify images which have been slightly curved by lensing events. A general
theoretical framework for sextupole lensing is developed which includes several
low order coefficients in a general lensing map. Tools to impute map
coefficients from the galaxy images are described and applied to the north
Hubble deep field. Instrumental PSFs, camera charge diffusion, and image
composition methods are modelled in the coefficient determination process.
Estimates of Poisson counting noise for each galaxy are used to cut galaxies
with signals too small to reliably establish curvature. Curved galaxies are
found to be spatially clumped, as would be expected if the curving were due to
small impact parameter lensing by localized ensembles of dark matter haloes.
Simulations provide an estimate of the total required lensing mass and the
acceptable mass range of the constituent haloes. The overdensities and
underdensities of visible galaxies and their locations in the Hubble foreground
is found to be consistent with our observations and their interpretation as
lensing events.Comment: 40 pages, 44 figure
Io's radar properties
Arecibo 13 cm wavelength radar observations during 1987-90 have yielded echoes from Io on each of 11 dates. Whereas Voyager imaged parts of the satellite at resolutions of several km and various visible/infrared measurements have probed the surfaces's microscale properties, the radar data yield new information about the nature of the surface at cm to km scales. Our observations provide fairly thorough coverage and reveal significant heterogeneity in Io's radar properties. A figure is given showing sums of echo spectra from 11 dates
