    Save water and safe water: Evaluation of design and storage period on water quality of rainwater harvesting system

    The present research has been aimed to assess the appropriateness of different aspects of rooftop rainwater harvesting system as an alternative of ground water installed at Chitra Topi. 25 households were purposively selected for the collection of relevant data with the help of interview schedules, focus group discussions, and water sampling. Average rooftop area of surveyed households was 100 m2. Ideal storage system and proper management of surplus during peak seasons can ensure water availability throughout the year. From quality perspective, there are few issues in the physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. But by the introduction of simple components there problems can be rectified to a large extent. Based on results, it is concluded that rain water harvesting systems were shown to be a relatively low cost option for improving a households’ geographical and temporal access to a water source, increasing convenience and decreasing collection times.     Moment distributions have a vital role in mathematics and statistics, in particular in probability theory, in the perspective research related to ecology, reliability, biomedical field, econometrics, survey sampling and in life-testing. Hasnain (2013) developed an exponentiated moment exponential (EME) distribution and discussed some of its important properties. In the present work, we propose a generalization of EME distribution which we call it generalized EME (GEME) distribution and develop various properties of the distribution. We also present characterizations of the distribution in terms of conditional expectation as well as based on hazard function of the GEME random variable

    Socio-economic analysis of the interventions aimed at improving water and sanitation condition of rural community

    Present research has been aimed to assess the socio-economic analysis of the water and sanitation interventions made by the government in rural areas of District Abbottabad, KPK, Pakistan. A cross-sectional study design was employed to collect data from the relevant actors with the help of interviews, questionnaires and focus group discussions. Respondents were satisfied with the cost of the water delivery at home and the quality of water was also appreciable. Majority of the people described the strengthened pardha system (Privacy), as major advantage of the interventions. In terms of economic benefits by the interventions it was quiet good. But still top down approach is used for implementation of water supplies schemes and sanitation interventions by the government which is not satisfactory indicator for maximizing the benefits.     Plants in vitro propagation with its applications in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic industries; current scenario and future approaches

    Plant tissue culture technique employed for the identification and isolation of bioactive phytocompounds has numerous industrial applications. It provides potential benefits for different industries which include food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics. Various agronomic crops i.e., cereals, fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants and forest trees are currently being used for in vitro propagation. Plant tissue culture coupled with biotechnological approaches leads towards sustainable agricultural development providing solutions to major food security issues. Plants are the rich source of phytochemicals with medicinal properties rendering them useful for the industrial production of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Furthermore, there are numerous plant compounds with application in the cosmetics industry. In addition to having moisturizing, anti‐ageing, anti‐wrinkle effects; plant-derived compounds also possess pharmacological properties such as antiviral, antimicrobial, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergy characteristics. The in vitro propagation of industrially significant flora is gaining attention because of its several advantages over conventional plant propagation methods. One of the major advantages of this technique is the quick availability of food throughout the year, irrespective of the growing season, thus opening new opportunities to the producers and farmers. The sterile or endangered flora can also be conserved by plant micro propagation methods. Hence, plant tissue culture is an extremely efficient and cost-effective technique for biosynthetic studies and bio-production, biotransformation, or bioconversion of plant-derived compounds. However, there are certain limitations of in-vitro plant regeneration system including difficulties with continuous operation, product removal, and aseptic conditions. For sustainable industrial applications of in-vitro regenerated plants on a large scale, these constraints need to be addressed in future studies
