    EU member states and enlargement towards the Balkans. EPC ISSUE PAPER No. 79, July 2015

    From the Executive Summary. The European Union’s enlargement to the Balkans seems to be running on autopilot since Croatia’s accession in 2013 and amidst the on-going crisis. While the region still has a clear European perspective, progress on the dossier has been marred not just by outstanding challenges in individual Balkan countries but often also by hurdles which develop within the Union – more specifically in the member states. While the EU’s internal procedures for handling enlargement have always been intergovernmental in nature, the frequency of incursions and opportunities for the member states to interfere and derail the process has increased over the past years, suggesting a so-called ‘nationalisation’ of enlargement. In 17 case studies and two theoretical chapters, this Issue Paper investigates whether the dossier has shifted more under the control of the member states, and looks at the kind of considerations and potential ‘roadblocks’ that influence the positions of key national actors on enlargement

    PALAEOSEISMOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE GYRTONI FAULT (THESSALY, CENTRAL GREECE)

    Two paleoseismological trenches were excavated across the Gyrtoni Fault in NE Thessaly and studied in order to understand the recent seismotectonic behavior of this structure. Twenty five fluvial-colluvial sediment and pottery samples from both the upthrown and the downthrown fault blocks were investigated. Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating has been applied to date both sedimentary depositspalaeosoils and pottery fragments. Paleoseismological analysis of the two trenches indicates evidence of three surface faulting events in the time span between 1.42 ±0.06 ka and 5.59 ± 0.13 ka. The observed vertical displacement per event of ~0.50 m corresponds to an Mw 6.5 ± 0.1 earthquake. An average fault slip rate of 0.41 ± 0.01 mm/yr and an average recurrence of 1.39 ± 0.14 ka for earthquakes were estimated. The results documented the activity of the fault and since the return period from the most recent event (minimum age 1.42 ± 0.06 ka) has expired, the possibility for reactivation of this active structure in the near future should be included in Seismic Hazard Assessment

    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Chlorophylls are compounds of extreme importance in the biosphere. Despite intense studies for the past 100 years, chlorophyll biosynthesis remains a very active field of research.Although 2-MV Chl b is a major plant pigment, present in virtually all photosynthetic tissues of higher plants, investigations aimed at elucidating its biosynthetic origin have met with limited success for the past 50 years.In this Ph.D. thesis, the occurrence of 2-MV Pchlide b and 2-MV Pchlide b phytyl ester in green plants and the characterization of these molecules are described. Derivation of simultaneous equations for quantitative determination of 2-MV Pchlide b and 2-MV protochlorophyllide b phytyl ester by spectrofluorometry in unsegregated mixtures is also described. Several experimental systems capable of accumulating detectable amounts of 2-MV Pchlide b under laboratory conditions in vivo are presented.Another part of this Ph.D. thesis deals with precursor-product relationship investigations of 2-MV Chl b biosynthesis and the development of a cell-free system capable of the net biosynthesis and accumulation of 2-MV Chl b in the light.The work is concluded with three-dimensional (3-D) molecular modeling studies of 2-MV Pchlide a, 2-MV Pchlide b, 2-MV Chlide a, 2-MV Chlide b, 2-MV Chl a and 2-MV Chl b.U of I OnlyETDs are only available to UIUC Users without author permissio

    Selection of features and prediction of wine quality using artificial neural networks

    The assessment of wine taste quality is a key factor for successful sales in the wine industry, where the aim is to fulfill the consumer's needs. Usually, this is determined by human experts who make the evaluation process very expensive and time-consuming.This study intends to introduce an alternative method for the prediction of wine quality with the usage of machine learning techniques such as linear regression and neural networks.Our data analysis is based on a real wine dataset provided by an established winery in Greece. First of all, we determine the dependence of the quality from selected physicochemical features of wine. We use some well-known algorithms to achieve better results in statistical calculations and specific methods of selecting the best possible number of variables using principal component analysis (PCA) and linear regression.After using artificial neural networks and checking various combinations of layers we conclude how the proposed statistical techniques improve the accuracy of the prediction of the wine quality using the previously selected features

    Comparative evaluation of Comfilcon A and Senofilcon A bandage contact lenses after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy

    Purpose: To evaluate and compare Comfilcon A and Senofilcon A silicone hydrogel contact lenses used as a therapeutic bandage following transepithelial excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Methods: Patients undergoing transepithelial PRK for myopia were prospectively recruited. Included patients had a Comfilcon A silicone hydrogel lens inserted in one eye, with a Senofilcon A lens in the contralateral eye. Postoperative assessment of subjective pain, epithelial healing and visual recovery was at day 1, 3 and 7. Contact lens factors including centration, movement and deposits were assessed. Results: 48 eyes of 24 patients were included in the study. Mean age was 31 years (SD 11) and mean refractive error −4.5 D (SD 1.8). Mean pain score at day 1 was significantly higher in the Comfilcon group at 4.6 (SD 2.7) vs. 1.5 (SD2.5) in the Senofilcon group (P < 0.005). Mean time to healing was 3.17 days (SD 0.37) in the Comfilcon group, and 3.21 days (SD 0.4) in the Senofilcon group, with no difference in defect size. There was a pronounced central raphe in 1 eye in the Comfilcon group vs. 5 eyes in the Senofilcon group (P = 0.19). Significantly more eyes demonstrated no lens movement in the Senofilcon group (18 vs. 4, P = 0.0001). Conclusion: The variation in material characteristics and lens geometry of different silicone hydrogel lenses affects their clinical characteristics in therapeutic roles. Other factors than oxygen permeability may affect pain and epithelial healing, with superior pain relief from the less permeable Senofilcon lens in this study
