    Successful Intervention for Pressure Ulcer by Nutrition Support Team: A Case Report

    A 23-year-old woman with heart failure developed pressure ulcer on her sacral area due to a long-term bed rest and impaired hemodynamics. The ulcer improved only slightly after 2 months with povidone-iodine sugar ointment because of severe nausea and anorexia. Then, the nutrition support team (NST) started intervention and estimated the patient's malnutrition from her body weight (30.1 kg), body mass index (BMI) (13.9), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF) (3.5 mm), arm circumference (AC) (17.2 cm) and serum albumin (2.6 g/dl). The NST administrated an enteral nutrition formula through a nasogastric tube and tried to provide meals according to the patient's taste. Although DESIGN score improved to 7 (DESIGN: d2e1s2i1g1n0 = 7) 2 months later, severe nausea prevented the patient from taking any food perorally. However, after nasogastric decannulation, her appetite improved and 1 month later her body weight increased to 32.8 kg, her BMI to 15.2, TSF to 7.5 mm, AC to 19.7 cm and serum albumin to 4.1 g/dl, and the wound completely healed

    Roles of MED1 in Quiescence of Hair Follicle Stem Cells and Maintenance of Normal Hair Cycling

    MED1 (mediator complex subunit 1) is expressed by human epidermal keratinocytes and functions as a coactivator of several transcription factors. To elucidate the role of MED1 in keratinocytes, we established keratinocyte-specific Med1-null (Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’) mice using the K5Cre/LoxP system. Development of the epidermis and appendages of Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice were macroscopically and microscopically normal until the second catagen of the hair cycle. However, the hair cycle of Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice was spontaneously repeated after the second telogen, which does not occur in wild-type (WT) mice. Hair follicles of Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice could not enter anagen after 6 months of age, resulting in sparse pelage hair in older Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice. Interfollicular epidermis (IFE) of Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice was acanthotic and more proliferative than that of WT mice, whereas these findings were less evident in older Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that the numbers of hair follicle bulge stem cells were reduced in Med1epiāˆ’/āˆ’ mice from a few months after birth. These results suggest that MED1 has roles in maintaining quiescence of keratinocytes and preventing depletion of the follicular stem cells

    Induction of transforming growth factor-beta 1 by androgen is mediated by reactive oxygen species in hair follicle dermal papilla cells

    The progression of androgenetic alopecia is closely related toandrogen-inducible transforming growth factor (TGF)-Ī²1 secretionby hair follicle dermal papilla cells (DPCs) in bald scalp.Physiological levels of androgen exposure were reported toincrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In thisstudy, rat vibrissae dermal papilla cells (DP-6) transfected withandrogen receptor showed increased ROS production followingandrogen treatment. We confirmed that TGF-Ī²1 secretion isincreased by androgen treatment in DP-6, whereas androgeninducibleTGF-Ī²1 was significantly suppressed by the ROSscavenger,N-acetyl cysteine.     Japanese multicenter database of healthy controls for [Ā¹Ā²Ā³I]FP-CIT SPECT

    Purpose: The aim of this multicenter trial was to generate a [Ā¹Ā²Ā³I]FP-CIT SPECT database of healthy controls from the common SPECT systems available in Japan. Methods: This study included 510 sets of SPECT data from 256 healthy controls (116 men and 140 women; age range, 30ā€“83 years) acquired from eight different centers. Images were reconstructed without attenuation or scatter correction (NOACNOSC), with only attenuation correction using the Chang method (ChangACNOSC) or X-ray CT (CTACNOSC), and with both scatter and attenuation correction using the Chang method (ChangACSC) or X-ray CT (CTACSC). These SPECT images were analyzed using the Southampton method. The outcome measure was the specific binding ratio (SBR) in the striatum. These striatal SBRs were calibrated from prior experiments using a striatal phantom. Results: The original SBRs gradually decreased in the order of ChangACSC, CTACSC, ChangACNOSC, CTACNOSC, and NOACNOSC. The SBRs for NOACNOSC were 46% lower than those for ChangACSC. In contrast, the calibrated SBRs were almost equal under no scatter correction (NOSC) conditions. A significant effect of age was found, with an SBR decline rate of 6.3% per decade. In the 30ā€“39 age group, SBRs were 12.2% higher in women than in men, but this increase declined with age and was absent in the 70ā€“79 age group. Conclusions: This study provided a large-scale quantitative database of [Ā¹Ā²Ā³I]FP-CIT SPECT scans from different scanners in healthy controls across a wide age range and with balanced sex representation. The phantom calibration effectively harmonizes SPECT data from different SPECT systems under NOSC conditions. The data collected in this study may serve as a reference database
