    Hall effect in laser ablated Co_2(Mn,Fe)Si thin films

    Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow thin films of the Heusler compounds Co_2MnSi and Co_2FeSi. Epitaxial growth was realized both directly on MgO (100) and on a Cr or Fe buffer layer. Structural analysis by x-ray and electron diffraction shows for both materials the ordered L2_1 structure. Bulk magnetization was determined with a SQUID magnetometer. The values agree with the Slater-Pauling rule for half-metallic Heusler compounds. On the films grown directly on the substrate measurements of the Hall effect have been performed. The normal Hall effect is nearly temperature independent and points towards a compensated Fermi surface. The anomalous contribution is found to be dominated by skew scattering. A remarkable sign change of both normal and anomalous Hall coefficients is observed on changing the valence electron count from 29 (Mn) to 30 (Fe).Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures submitted to J Phys

    An Effective Reduction of Critical Current for Current-Induced Magnetization Switching by a Ru Layer Insertion in an Exchange-Biased Spin-Valve

    Recently it has been predicted that a spin-polarized electrical current perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) directly flowing through a magnetic element can induce magnetization switching through spin-momentum transfer. In this letter, the first observation of current-induced magnetization switching (CIMS) in exchange-biased spin-valves (ESPVs) at room temperature is reported. The ESPVs show the CIMS behavior under a sweeping dc current with a very high critical current density. It is demonstrated that a thin Ruthenium (Ru) layer inserted between a free layer and a top electrode effectively reduces the critical current densities for the CIMS. An "inverse" CIMS behavior is also observed when the thickness of the free layer increases.Comment: 15 pages with figure

    This paper describes retro commissioning of a standard commercial office building in Japan. The owner's expectations for retro commissioning are realization of energy and cost savings, and controlling the increase in electric power demand, while continuing use of most existing equipment, and maintenance of high efficiency operation. First, the performance of the existing equipment was checked using the BEMS during retro commissioning program phase. Next, optimal selection of a system and heat source equipment was performed using the simulation in the design phase. Furthermore, the verification of the performance of the refrigeration machine installed was carried out as a Functional Performance Test. And the economic effect by a repair work was verified during the operation phase. The simple payback of the project was about six years

    Modeling wet deposition and concentration of inorganics over Northeast Asia with MRI-PM/c

    We conducted a regional-scale simulation over Northeast Asia for the year 2006 using an aerosol chemical transport model, with time-varying lateral and upper boundary concentrations of gaseous species predicted by a global stratospheric and tropospheric chemistry-climate model. The present one-way nested global-through-regional-scale model is named the Meteorological Research Institute–Passive-tracers Model system for atmospheric Chemistry (MRI-PM/c). We evaluated the model's performance with respect to the major anthropogenic and natural inorganic components, SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2−</sup>, NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>−</sup>, Na<sup>+</sup> and Ca<sup>2+</sup> in the air, rain and snow measured at the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) stations. Statistical analysis showed that approximately 40–50 % and 70–80 % of simulated concentration and wet deposition of SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2−</sup>, NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>−</sup>and Ca<sup>2+</sup> are within factors of 2 and 5 of the observations, respectively. The prediction of the sea-salt originated component Na<sup>+</sup> was not successful at near-coastal stations (where the distance from the coast ranged from 150 to 700 m), because the model grid resolution (Δ<i>x</i>=60 km) is too coarse to resolve it. The simulated Na<sup>+</sup> in precipitation was significantly underestimated by up to a factor of 30

    Exact expression for the diffusion propagator in a family of time-dependent anharmonic potentials

    We have obtained the exact expression of the diffusion propagator in the time-dependent anharmonic potential V(x,t)=1/2a(t)x2+blnxV(x,t)={1/2}a(t)x^2+b\ln x. The underlying Euclidean metric of the problem allows us to obtain analytical solutions for a whole family of the elastic parameter a(t), exploiting the relation between the path integral representation of the short time propagator and the modified Bessel functions.     With the recent discovery that many aspects of black hole thermodynamics can be effectively reduced to problems in three spacetime dimensions, it has become increasingly important to understand the ``statistical mechanics'' of the (2+1)-dimensional black hole of Banados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ). Several conformal field theoretic derivations of the BTZ entropy exist, but none is completely satisfactory, and many questions remain open: there is no consensus as to what fields provide the relevant degrees of freedom or where these excitations live.
