The association between motor capacity and motor performance in school-aged children with cerebral palsy: An observational study
Background This study aimed to investigate the association between motor capacity and motor performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) aged 6–12 years with Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels I to III. Methods Forty-six children with CP (24 boys and 22 girls) classified as GMFCS levels Ⅰ, Ⅱ, or Ⅲ were included. Motor capacity was measured by the Gross motor function measure (GMFM), Pediatric balance scale (PBS), Timed up and go (TUG), and 6-min walk test (6MWT). Motor performance was measured by triaxial accelerometers. Estimations of physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) (kcal/kg/day), percentage of time spent on physical activity (% sedentary physical activity; %SPA; % light physical activity, %LPA; % moderate physical activity, %MPA; % vigorous physical activity %VPA; and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, %MVPA), and activity counts (counts/minute) were obtained. Results Children with GMFCS level I showed a significantly higher motor capacity (GMFM-66, GMFM-88, D-dimension and E-dimension, PBS and 6MWT) than those with level II or III. Children with GMFCS level II and/or III had significantly lower physical activity (PAEE, % MPA, % VPA, %MVPA, and activity counts) than children with GMFCS level I. Multiple linear regression analysis (dependent variable, GMFM-66) showed that %MVPA was positively associated with GMFM-66 in the GMFCS level II & III children but not in GMFCS level I children
Discrimination of cultivation ages and cultivars of ginseng leaves using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis
AbstractTo determine whether Fourier transform (FT)-IR spectral analysis combined with multivariate analysis of whole-cell extracts from ginseng leaves can be applied as a high-throughput discrimination system of cultivation ages and cultivars, a total of total 480 leaf samples belonging to 12 categories corresponding to four different cultivars (Yunpung, Kumpung, Chunpung, and an open-pollinated variety) and three different cultivation ages (1 yr, 2 yr, and 3 yr) were subjected to FT-IR. The spectral data were analyzed by principal component analysis and partial least squares-discriminant analysis. A dendrogram based on hierarchical clustering analysis of the FT-IR spectral data on ginseng leaves showed that leaf samples were initially segregated into three groups in a cultivation age-dependent manner. Then, within the same cultivation age group, leaf samples were clustered into four subgroups in a cultivar-dependent manner. The overall prediction accuracy for discrimination of cultivars and cultivation ages was 94.8% in a cross-validation test. These results clearly show that the FT-IR spectra combined with multivariate analysis from ginseng leaves can be applied as an alternative tool for discriminating of ginseng cultivars and cultivation ages. Therefore, we suggest that this result could be used as a rapid and reliable F1 hybrid seed-screening tool for accelerating the conventional breeding of ginseng
Generating nearly single-cycle pulses with increased intensity and strongly asymmetric pulses of petawatt level
Generation of petawatt-class pulses with a nearly single-cycle duration or with a strongly asymmetric longitudinal profile using a thin plasma layer are investigated via particle-in-cell simulations and the analytical flying mirror model. It is shown that the transmitted pulses having a duration as short as about 4 fs (1.2 laser cycles) or one-cycle front (tail) asymmetric pulses with peak intensity of about 10(21) W/cm(2) can be produced by optimizing system parameters. Here, a new effect is found for the shaping of linearly polarized laser pulses, owing to which the peak amplitude of the transmitted pulse becomes larger than that of the incoming pulse, and intense harmonics are generated. Characteristics of the transmitting window are then studied for different parameters of laser pulse and plasma layer. For a circular polarization, it is shown that the flying mirror model developed for shaping laser pulses with ultrathin foils can be successfully applied to plasma layers having a thickness of about the laser wavelength, which allows the shape of the transmitted pulse to be analytically predicted.open6
Assessment in marine environment for a hypothetic nuclear accident based on the database of tidal harmonic constants
The eleven nuclear power plants in operation, under construction and a well-planned plant in the east coast of China
generally use seawater for reactor cooling. In this study, an oceanic dispersion assessment system based on a database
of tidal harmonic constants is developed. This system can calculate the tidal current without a large computational
cost, and it is possible to calculate real-time predictions of pollu-tant dispersions in the ocean. Calculated amplitudes
and phases have maximum errors of 10% and 20%with observations, respectively. A number of hypothetical
simulations were performed according to vary-ing of the release starting time and duration of pollutant for the six
nuclear sites in China. The developed system requires a computational time of one hour for one month of real-time
forecasting in Linux OS. Thus, it can use to evaluate rapidly the dispersion characteristics of the pollutants

The limited immunomodulatory effects of escharectomy on the kinetics of endotoxin, cytokines, and adhesion molecules in major burns.
Escharectomy has been shown to improve the survival rates and the outcomes in burns. This observational study was conducted to assess the role of escharectomy on the inflammatory mediators in major burns. Seventeen ASA physical status II or status III adult surviving major burn patients were recruited. When the escharectomy was scheduled, a series of blood samples was obtained at -3 and -1 days preoperation, and +1 and +3 postoperation. The changing levels of endotoxin, cytokines, and adhesion molecules were measured with a quantitative sandwich immunoassay. Extensive escharectomy did not appear to have any significant impact on the levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-10, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 and soluble vascular adhesion molecule-1. Meanwhile, endotoxin and E-selectin were significantly decreased after escharectomy. Escharectomy appeared to have a limited immunomodulatory effect on the inflammatory mediators in systemic inflammatory responses induced by major burns. This is probably related to the timing and extent of surgery, and the complex nature of burn-related inflammation
Analysis of Yield of Eleutherosides B and E in Acanthopanax divaricatus
An analysis of the yield of eleutherosides B and E in Acanthopanax divaricatus and A. koreanum was performed using high performance liquid chromatography to evaluate production by different cultivation methods. In A. divaricatus and A. koreanum, the total content of eleutherosides B and E was 2.466–7.360 mg/g varying by plant section, 3.886–11.506 mg/g by pinching site, 3.655–10.083 mg/g by planting time, and 3.652–10.108 mg/g by fertilizer ratio. Thus the total content of eleutherosides B and E in A. divaricatus and A. koreanum differed depending on cultivation methods. These results present useful information for high eleutheroside content applications in A. divaricatus and A. koreanum. This information can affect selection of plant section and cultivation methods for nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical material development
Interglial Crosstalk in Obesity-Induced Hypothalamic Inflammation
Glial cells have recently gained particular attention for their close involvement in neuroinflammation and metabolic disorders including obesity and diabetes. In the central nervous system (CNS), different types of resident glial cells have been documented to express several signaling molecules and related receptors, and their crosstalks have been implicated in physiology and pathology of the CNS. Emerging evidence illustrates that malfunctioning glia and their products are an important component of hypothalamic inflammation. Recent studies have suggested that glia–glia crosstalk is a pivotal mechanism of overnutrition-induced chronic hypothalamic inflammation, which might be intrinsically associated with obesity/diabetes and their pathological consequences. This review covers the recent advances in the molecular aspects of interglial crosstalk in hypothalamic inflammation, proposing a central role of such a crosstalk in the development of obesity, diabetes, and related complications. Finally, we discuss the possibilities and challenges of targeting glial cells and their crosstalk for a better understanding of hypothalamic inflammation and related metabolic dysfunctions
Interstitial lung disease caused by TS-1: a case of long-term drug retention as a fatal adverse reaction
TS-1 is an oral anti-cancer agent for gastric cancer with a high response rate and low toxicity. We report a case of long-term drug retention of TS-1 causing interstitial lung disease (ILD) as a fatal adverse reaction. A 65-year-old woman underwent a total gastrectomy with pathologic confirmation of gastric adenocarcinoma. She received 6 cycles of TS-1 and low-dose cisplatin for post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy followed by single-agent maintenance therapy with TS-1. After 8 months, the patient complained of a productive cough with sputum and mild dyspnea. A pulmonary evaluation revealed diffuse ILD in the lung fields, bilaterally. In spite of discontinuing chemotherapy and the administration of corticosteroids, the pulmonary symptoms did not improve, and the patient died of pulmonary failure. TS-1-induced ILD can be caused by long-term drug retention that alters the lung parenchyma irreversibly, the outcome of which can be life-threatening. Pulmonary evaluation for early detection of disease is recommended
