This thesis is a statement about a series of paintings based on an invented dollhouse object that conveys the artist’s identity and placement in the world. Through this essay, the artist represents the home as a space that fosters the recovery and rebirth of invisible energy, ki and examines ideas of transience, interconnection, and rebirth in the mysterious flow of ki in the home. Also the artist will explain her own view about being an artist, the methodologies and specific techniques of her paintings, and her artistic direction for the future

Neutron Reflectometry for Studying Proteins/Peptides in Biomimetic Membranes

The development of biomimetic surfaces for protein and peptide adsorptions is continuously expanding. Their biological functions can be influenced by the properties of the underlying artificial environment but the detailed mechanism is still not clear. In the past 30 years, neutron reflectometry has been widely applied to characterise the molecular structure of proteins or multi-protein complexes and their interactions with fluid artificial membrane that mimics the cellular environment. The specific interactions, bindings or structural changes between proteins and membranes play a crucial role in cellular responses and have promising potential in diagnostics and other biosensor applications. This chapter presents the progression of surface design for protein adsorption/interactions on membranes in detail, ranging from a simple phospholipid monolayer setup to more complicated artificial lipid bilayer systems. Furthermore, a new development of designed surfaces for studying the integral membrane protein system is also discussed in this chapter. A brief overview of various membrane mimetic surfaces is first outlined, followed by presenting specific examples of protein-membrane interactions studied by neutron reflectometry. The author demonstrates how to use neutron reflectometry as an advanced technique to provide step-by-step structural details for biomolecular applications in a well-controlled manner

An Integrated Web-based System for MEDLINE Analysis: A Case Study of Chronic Kidney Disease

    Get PDF
In the era of big data, medical researchers attempt to utilize some analysis techniques like machine learning and text mining on their large-scale corpora to save valuable labor work and time. Consequently, many data analysis platforms are built to support medical professionals such as Pubtator, GeneWays, BioContext, etc. These platforms are helpful to medical entities recognition and relation extraction, but there is not an integrated platform to support researchers’ various needs, and medical projects are isolated from each other, which is hard to be shared and reused. As a result, we present an integrated system containing ‘name entity recognition’, ‘document categorization’ and ‘association extraction’. Besides, we add the concept of ‘socialization’ making projects reusable for further analyses. A case study of chronic kidney disease was adopted to indicate the effectiveness of the proposed system

First workshop of the Asian Network for Environment and Energy: Event report

Asia is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Many Asian countries experienced strong economic growth and rapid urbanization in the last decade. However, Asia is also faced with the challenge of environmental protection, energy security and CO2 emissions. The purpose of establishment of the Asian Network for Environment and Energy (ANEE) is to connect the re-search and training institutions, facilitate the exchange of experience and know-how, and initiating joint projects on environmental protection and renewable energy. The network organizes annual scientific conferences, develops projects addressing environmental problems of the region, and builds personnel training programs for renewable energy and environment. The first ANEE workshop held in Ho Chi Minh City is the launching event the network addressing air pollution, water management, solid waste and energy.

Ectopic Pancreas with Hemorrhagic Cystic Change in the Anterior Mediastinum

A 31-year-old female was referred from other hospital due to migrating chest pain, mild cough, and blood-tinged sputum for three days before admission. Laboratory tests were unremarkable. Chest computed tomography revealed an elliptical necrotic mass at the left anterior mediastinum, measuring 7×3×4 cm. With the impression of mediastinal abscess or loculated empyema, thoracoscopic resection was performed. There was severe pleural adhesion around the mass. The mass could be resected by the wedge resection of the adhesed upper lobe tissue of left lung around the mass. Final pathologic diagnosis was ectopic pancreas
