The exocyclic amino group of adenine in PtII and PdII complexes: a critical comparison of the X-ray crystallographic structural data and gas phase calculations

A report on a RuII complex containing a chelating neutral 9MeA ligand with an intact N6H2 group seems to be inconsistent with the shortness of the C6–N6 bond (1.315(12) Å) and rather points to a rare tautomer structure of 9MeA. An unambiguous assignment of the site of proton attachment is difficult on the basis of the X-ray data however: Shan N, Vickers SJ, Adams H, Ward MD, Thomas JA

The designation of E (Entgegen) and Z (Zusammen) isomers is justified given the high double bond character of C6–N6 and the priority numbers of the two metal ions. It is noted that this designation is also in use for complexes having a single metal at N6 only with respect to the imidazole part of adenine: Rodriguez-Bailey VM, Clarke MJ
