    The 3-D kinematics of water masers around the semiregular variable RT Virginis

    We report observations of water masers around the semiregular variable RT Virginis (RT Vir), which have been made with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) at five epochs, each separated by three weeks of time. We detected about 60 maser features at each epoch. Overall, 61 features, detected at least twice, were tracked by their radial velocities and proper motions. The 3-D maser kinematics exhibited a circumstellar envelope that is expanding roughly spherically with a velocity of about 8 km/s. Asymmetries in both the spatial and velocity distributions of the maser features were found in the envelope, but less significant than that found in other semiregular variables. Systematic radial-velocity drifts of individual maser features were found with amplitudes of <= 2 km/s/yr. For one maser feature, we found a quadratic position shift with time along a straight line on the sky. This apparent motion indicates an acceleration with an amplitude of 33 km/s/yr, implying the passage of a shock wave driven by the stellar pulsation of RT Vir. The acceleration motion is likely seen only on the sky plane because of a large velocity gradient formed in the accelerating maser region. We estimated the distance to RT Vir to be about 220 pc on the basis of both the statistical parallax and model-fitting methods for the maser kinematics.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Here we report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man who has inserted a 140-cm vinyl tube in the bladder for masturbation. He could not retrieve it, and the bladder foreign body remained in this position for about two years. He was referred to our hospital and open surgery was performed

    Rescue with an anti-inflammatory peptide of chickens infected H5N1 avian flu

    Chickens suffering from avian flu caused by H5N1 influenza virus are destined to die within 2 days due to a systemic inflammatory response. Since HVJ infection (1,2) and influenza virus infection (3,4) cause infected cells to activate homologous serum complement, the systemic inflammatory response elicited could be attributed to the unlimited generation of C5a anaphylatoxin of the complement system, which is a causative peptide of serious inflammation. In monkeys inoculated with a lethal dose of LPS (4 mg/kg body weight), inhibition of C5a by an inhibitory peptide termed AcPepA (5) rescued these animals from serious septic shock which would have resulted in death within a day (6). Therefore, we tested whether AcPepA could also have a beneficial effect on chickens with bird flu. On another front, enhanced production of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and the activation of mast cells (MCs) have been implicated in granulocyte sequestration (7). An endothelin receptor derived antisense homology box peptide (8) designated ETR-P1/fl was shown to antagonize endothelin A receptor (ET-A receptor) (9) and reduce such inflammatory responses as endotoxin-shock (10) and hemorrhagic shock (11), thereby suppressing histamine release in the circulation (12). Thus, we also administered ETR-P1/fl to bird flu chickens expecting suppression of a systemic inflammatory response

    Unexpected outcome after sclerotherapy of simple renal cyst

    BACKGROUND: Simple renal cysts usually have benign clinical features. We report a rare case of papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with a large recurrent simple cyst following sclerotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Japanese woman received minocycline sclerotherapy for a large (9 cm in diameter) simple left renal cyst in May 2005. The cyst regrew, and second-line sclerotherapy with ethanol was performed in November 2005. Three years later, she developed papillary RCC on the wall of the recurrent renal cyst. Radical nephrectomy was performed, but the patient died of metastatic disease 15 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: Malignant transformation from recurrent simple renal cyst to RCC may occur in the years following sclerotherapy, underscoring the need for long-term follow-up

    1.トラクタのアスファルト路面走行および畑地ロータリ耕における操舵力の特性を知るため,トラクタの前輪荷重,作業速度およびオペレータの諸条件をかえ,作業中のトラクタの横変位,実舵角,操舵角および操舵力を測定した. 2.ハンドルにかかる力とその累積頻度数との間には曲線的関係があり,ハンドルにかかる小さい力の頻度は一般に多い. 前輪荷重を軽くした場合,ハンドル操舵の走行では逆にハンドルにかかる力が小さく,累積頻度数は多くなる. また,作業速度,オペレータによって影響をうける. ロータリ耕においてはアスファルト路走行に比してハンドルにかかる力および累積頻度は増加し,3倍近くになる. 3.ハンドルにかかる力とハンドル回転角速度から求めた操舵馬力と相対頻度との間には双曲線的関係があり,操舵馬力の大きいときの路面走行の場合と比して6倍近い. 4.単位時間当りの操舵に要する仕事量はトラクタの前輪荷重が軽いとき,作業速度が低いときに少なくなる. 作業速度が変動しても単位時間当りの操舵に要する仕事量は同じ程度となる. ロータリ耕での単位耕うん距離当りの仕事量は走行時のそれと比して30~40倍近い

    13C/15N‐Enriched L‐Dopa as a Triple‐Resonance NMR Probe to Monitor Neurotransmitter Dopamine in the Brain and Liver Extracts of Mice

    In an attempt to monitor μM-level trace constituents, we applied here 1H-{13C-15N} triple-resonance nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to 13C/15N-enriched L-Dopa as the inevitable precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. The perfect selectivity (to render endogenous components silent) and μM-level sensitivity (700 MHz spectrometer equipped with a cryogenic probe) of triple-resonance allowed the unambiguous and quantitative metabolic and pharmacokinetic analyses of administered L-Dopa/dopamine in the brain and liver of mice. The level of dopamine generated in the brain (within the range 7–76 μM, which covers the typical stimulated level of ~30 μM) could be clearly monitored ex vivo, but was slightly short of the detection limit of a 7T MR machine for small animals. This work suggests that μM-level trace constituents are potential targets of ex vivo monitoring as long as they contain N atom(s) and their appropriate 13C/15N-enrichment is synthetically accessible

    Photoacoustic in vivo 3D imaging of tumor using a highly tumor-targeting probe under high-threshold conditions

    Three-dimensional (3D) representation of a tumor with respect to its size, shape, location, and boundaries is still a challenge in photoacoustic (PA) imaging using artificial contrast agents as probes. We carried out PA imaging of tumors in mice using 800RS-PMPC, which was obtained by coupling of 800RS, a near-infrared cyanine dye, with PMPC, a highly selective tumor-targeting methacrylate polymer having phosphorylcholine side chains, as a probe. The conjugate 800RS-PMPC forms compact nanoparticles (dDLS = 14.3 nm), retains the biocompatibility of the parent polymer (PMPC) and exhibits unprecedented PA performance. When applied to mice bearing a 6 × 3 × 3 mm3 tumor buried 6 mm beneath the skin, the probe 800RS-PMPC selectively accumulates in the tumor and emits PA signals that are strong enough to be unambiguously distinguished from noise signals of endogenous blood/hemoglobin. The PA image thus obtained under high-threshold conditions allows 3D characterization of the tumor in terms of its size, shape, location, and boundaries
