Music Therapy Growth in Japan: The Richness and the Confusion of Transition

I would like to describe the recent history of music therapy in Japan first and then give some analysis on it. I will focus only on the Japanese situation this time, wondering if it has something in common with other Asian countries or not. I hope this first presentation will raise reactions and discussion from other countries

重度知的障碍児との長期にわたる音楽療法セッションにおける 「意味深さの経験」に関する考察

 音楽療法という事象は介入-効果という構造のほかにも、独自的な「意味深さの経験」 の広がりとして捉えることができるのではないかという仮説に基づき、その多層的価値を検証する。筆者と重度知的障碍児との6年間にわたる音楽療法セッショ ンに関する既出の症例研究のうち、療法士によるナラティブ・ストーリーを分析の題材として用い、療法士が経験している「意味深さ」を一般共有的価値、発達的価値、自己内発的価値、対話的価値、共生的価値の ５つの側面に分類する。さらに個々のサブカテゴリーを設けて、経験の内容を解釈する。結論として、「５つの価値側面の位置関係に関する考察」、「相互関係 の場に立ち上がる意味」、そして「療法の円環的・相互的視点」について議論する。最後に、将来的な研究の視点について示唆する。Based on the assumption that the phenomenon of music therapy can be conceptualized as unique and expanding “meaningful experiences,” not limited to intervention-effect structure, the multi-layered values of the “meaningful experiences” are investigated. The narrative story by the therapist, written as a part of the case study, is used as the analysis materials; the “meaningful experiences” by the therapist are categorized into the five value aspects of sharing norms from mainstream culture, development desired, Client’s intrinsic Self, dialogical interrelationship, and co-existing contraposition.  Each aspect is interpreted by further classifying into the sub-categories.  As the conclusion, I discuss “overview of the interplay of the five value aspects,”  “meanings emerged in the mutuality of the field,” and “circular, mutually-influence perspective on therapy” Lastly, perspectives in future formal research are suggested

Introduction

On January 10th, 2005, The Asian Music Therapy Symposium was held in Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Kawasaki, Japan, as the 80th anniversary of the school foundation. As a partial report on the symposium, I offer here an edited version of the paper I presented at the conference, a Fact Sheet on Music Therapy in Japan, and the discussion paper: "Things Asian Music Therapists should Learn" by Izumi Futamata (an experienced Japanese music therapist and a lecturer at Senzoku)

はじめに

2005年1月10日、アジア音楽療法シンポジウムが、川崎にある洗足学園大学の80周年記念事業として行なわれた。これは、アジアの音楽療法士が集ってアジアに特有の歩みについて語り合う最初の公的機会であり、同大学の塩谷百合子教授と岡崎香奈助教授の努力が実を結んだものである。 このシンポジウムの部分的報告として、日本からの音楽療法士、生野里花（Voices　アジア編集委員）による発表「日本における音楽療法の現状と展望」の改訂版、同じく「日本の音楽療法の現況」、そして二俣泉（経験豊かな日本の音楽療法士であり、洗足学園の講師も勤める）による討論「アジアの音楽療法士が学ぶべきことは何か？」をここに掲載する

Development and Prospect of Music Therapy in Japan

I have a strange sense that music therapy is something that never fits completely into an existing society, regardless of Western or Asian context. Just aiming at being accepted by society will only drive us to a dead end. Rather, music therapy could conceive the possibility of shaking (aspects of) an existing society and could suggest new (or deeper) values of music in relation to human-beings. For this purpose, we need to cultivate our insights about the culture-specific elements and the universal elements in all areas of clinical, academic, and professional practice. By doing so, we can accomplish "independence" in a true sense, including economic independence some day

日本における音楽療法の現状と展望

そもそも音楽療法というのは、西洋であろうがアジアであろうが、既存の社会からどこかはみだすような性質を持っており、受け入れられることだけをめざすと、袋小路にあたるように思う。むしろ音楽療法は、既存の社会を揺り動かしていくもの、人間と関わる音楽という、既存の文化にとって新しい価値観、（あるいは深い価値観）の提示をしていくという可能性をはらんでいるのではないか。 そのために、私たち音楽療法士は何が文化特定的な要素で、何が普遍的な要素であるのかを、臨床、学問、専門性のあらゆる分野で時間をかけて洞察していく必要がある。そうすることでこそ、いつの日か、「経済的自立」にとどまらない本当の意味での「自立」が得られるであろう
