Code camps and hackathons in education - literature review and lessons learned
Motivation: Code camps and hackathons been used in education for almost two decades. These approaches are usually intensive and for most times quite practical events for solving some real-world problems with various educational objectives. The objectives and structures of these events differ depending on the role of the event in curricula. Problem statement: Both code camps and hackathons been implemented in various ways, with varying success levels. As expected the implementation of the event varies considerably depending on the objectives set for the event, but that then leads to the difficulty and problem setting to understand what organizing of these events actually mean. For educational context, curricula have also its role in defining the targeted skills and competencies the events has to consider too. Approach: We applied a systematic literature review (SLR) to look at the various definitions and modes of these events. Whether it is called âcode campâ, or âhackathonâ, or anything else with the same basic meaning, we want to find out what skills and competencies these events emphasize, how they are used in Computer Science (CS) and Software Engineering (SE) education and what are the general structures of the actual arranged events. Contribution: It is aim of this SLR to i) identify various possible ways of implementing these intensive events, and ii) reflect the results to the lessons we have learned of almost two decades of various intensive code camps and hackathons we have been organizing building and participating into. Based on the results, we claim that there is tremendous potential of using these events in education and in the curriculum than how it has been applied so far
Cholesterol-Dependent Anaplasma phagocytophilum Exploits the Low-Density Lipoprotein Uptake Pathway
In eukaryotes, intracellular cholesterol homeostasis and trafficking are tightly regulated. Certain bacteria, such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum, also require cholesterol; it is unknown, however, how this cholesterol-dependent obligatory intracellular bacterium of granulocytes interacts with the host cell cholesterol regulatory pathway to acquire cholesterol. Here, we report that total host cell cholesterol increased >2-fold during A. phagocytophilum infection in a human promyelocytic leukemia cell line. Cellular free cholesterol was enriched in A. phagocytophilum inclusions as detected by filipin staining. We determined that A. phagocytophilum requires cholesterol derived from low-density lipoprotein (LDL), because its replication was significantly inhibited by depleting the growth medium of cholesterol-containing lipoproteins, by blocking LDL uptake with a monoclonal antibody against LDL receptor (LDLR), or by treating the host cells with inhibitors that block LDL-derived cholesterol egress from late endosomes or lysosomes. However, de novo cholesterol biosynthesis is not required, since inhibition of the biosynthesis pathway did not inhibit A. phagocytophilum infection. The uptake of fluorescence-labeled LDL was enhanced in infected cells, and LDLR expression was up-regulated at both the mRNA and protein levels. A. phagocytophilum infection stabilized LDLR mRNA through the 3âČ UTR region, but not through activation of the sterol regulatory element binding proteins. Extracellular signalâregulated kinase (ERK) was up-regulated by A. phagocytophilum infection, and inhibition of its upstream kinase, MEK, by a specific inhibitor or siRNA knockdown, reduced A. phagocytophilum infection. Up-regulation of LDLR mRNA by A. phagocytophilum was also inhibited by the MEK inhibitor; however, it was unclear whether ERK activation is required for LDLR mRNA up-regulation by A. phagocytophilum. These data reveal that A. phagocytophilum exploits the host LDL uptake pathway and LDLR mRNA regulatory system to accumulate cholesterol in inclusions to facilitate its replication
TIETOTURVASUUNNITELMA SEKĂ TIETOVERKON JA VARMUUSKOPIOINTIRATKAISUN SUUNNITTELU AV-TIIMI LJ OY:LLE
TÀmÀn opinnÀytetyön tavoitteena oli laatia Keravalla toimivalle AV-alaan erikoistuneelle yritykselle tietoturvasuunnitelma. Työhön sisÀllytettiin myös tietoverkkopohjaisen tiedonvarmennusratkaisun
suunnittelu ja nykyisen tietoverkon uudistamisen kartoittaminen. Yrityksen tiedon suojaaminen on
tÀrkeÀÀ toiminnan jatkumisen kannalta.
Ensin toimitusjohtajan kanssa kartoitettiin yrityksen nykyisen tietoturvan taso. Puutteet ja toiveet
kirjattiin, jotta niihin voitiin paneutua työn myöhemmissÀ vaiheissa. TyössÀ kÀsiteltiin myös
tietoturvaan liittyviÀ kÀsitteitÀ sekÀ erilaisia varmuuskopiointiratkaisuja. Tarkemmin tutustuttiin
NAS-tyyppiseen tiedonvarmennusratkaisuun. Tietoverkon ja varmuuskopiointiratkaisun
suunnittelussa otettiin huomioon myös liiketoiminnan mahdollinen laajentuminen tulevaisuudessa.
Teoriatietoa aiheesta haettiin alan kirjallisuudesta sekÀ internetjulkaisuista. Työn kÀytÀnnön
toteutus siirtyi yrityksen toiveesta tuonnemmaksi.
TyössÀ toteutettiin tietoturvasuunnitelma AV-Tiimille, jossa esiteteltiin huomatut puutteet yrityksen
teknisessÀ sekÀ fyysisessÀ tietoturvassa sekÀ ratkaisut niihin. Lopuksi työssÀ esitettiin tarvittavat
ratkaisut ja hankinnat tietoverkon uudistamista varten. The purpose of this thesis was to draw up an information security plan for a company which specializes
in audio and visual business. Another purpose was to improve their current network topology.
Securing information is very valuable and important when planning the continuity of the companyâs
operations.
The thesis was started by a meeting with the companyâs CEO to map out the possible gaps in AVTiimiâs
current information security. Inadequacies and requests were written down so that they
could be met in the later stage. Facts concerning working information security were also studied.
Various backup methods were also studied, the emphasis being on a NAS type solution. Theoretical
information was searched from world wide web and also from literature.
As a result of this thesis an information security plan for AV-Tiimi LJ Ltd was implemented. It outlines
the deficiencies noted earlier in the process and suggests solutions for them. It also describes
the solution for the enterpriseâs data backup. Finally, the thesis provides the necessary solutions
for the renovation of the current intranet
Luonnollisen kielen kÀyttöliittymÀ tietoliikenneverkon infrastruktuurin tietomallin kÀsittelyyn
TÀssÀ tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, mitÀ komponentteja luonnollista suomen kieltÀ
ymmÀrtÀvÀn dialogikÀyttöliittymÀn toteuttaminen tietoliikenneverkkoinfrastruktuurin tietomallin
kÀsittelemiseen vaatii, ja tunnistettiin tÀrkeimmÀt komponenttityypit sekÀ suomenkieliset
tietÀmyskannat, jotka voidaan sovittaa kielenymmÀrtÀmisprosessin kÀyttöön. Tutkimuksen
johtopÀÀtöksenÀ on, ettÀ rajoitetusti suomen kieltÀ ymmÀrtÀvÀ kÀyttöliittymÀ on
toteutettavissa, mutta kaikkiin vaatimuksiin ei pystytÀ vastaamaan olemassaolevin komponentein. This research studies which components are needed to create a finnish language
natural language dialogue interface for the network infrastructure data model. Study has
identified key natural language understanding component types and finnish language knowledge
bases that can be re-purposed for the language understanding process. Study concludes
that limited finnish natural language interface for the broadcast network infrastructure model
is feasible, but all requirements can not be met with available components
