The Effect of Advertising on Attitudes Toward Tobacco Use and Decisions About Smoking Among Virginia Adolescents

Purpose: This study seeks to determine 1) whether the type of advertising exposure is associated with adolescent health perceptions of tobacco use, and 2) whether the type of media exposure is associated with initiation plans (non-smokers) or quitting plans (smokers). Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of middle school students (n=l1,128).Psychosocial variables were knowledge of the risks of tobacco use (range: 3-15) and benefits of being tobacco free (range: 7-35) with higher scores indicating greater understanding. Intentions to quit or initiate were construed as binary variables. Exposure variables were tobacco advertisements or anti-tobacco media messages. Covariates were gender, race, grade level, and parental closeness. The data were analyzed using SAS, version 9.1 and hierarchical regression was used to account for random effects of students nested within organizations. Results: Exposure to tobacco advertising was associated with higher knowledge (12.6 v. 12.4, pth graders, exposure to tobacco messages was associated with higher percentages planning to initiate (19.7 v. 16.2, p=0.008) whereas anti-tobacco exposure was associated with lower percentages (16.3 v. 20.3, p=0.024). Exposure to more than one anti-tobacco message was associated with higher knowledge and benefit. Conclusions: Counter-advertising can make adolescents more aware of health benefits of remaining tobacco free. Placing tighter restrictions on tobacco advertising directed at adolescents is warranted. The dose-response suggests disseminating anti-tobacco messages in many venues

Alienability of Future Interests in Tennessee

One of the most technical problems in the field of property law is the manner in which future interests in realty and personalty may be alienated. The term, future interest, is used here to mean a presently existing interest which is deprived of possession but which looks forward to possession in the future. The term is a misnomer. Such an interest is future only in the sense that it looks toward becoming possessory in the future. Just as future interests is a law of words, so the alienability of future interests is, in the absence of statute, a law of methods. The initial problem is to classify the interest. Only then can the proper methods of alienation be brought into play. At least 33 states have statutes which either expressly or impliedly provide for the transfer of these interests.\u27 But in many states there are no statutes and the common law or more modern judicial decisions control. It is the purpose of this Note to discuss two problems: (1) the voluntary or consensual inter vivos conveyance of future interests, and (2) the rights of creditors to seize these interests under judicial process in satisfaction of a debt. Particular emphasis will be placed on Tennessee law. But in order to understand the law of Tennessee in these problems and to point out possible future development in this state, it is necessary to consider in addition both the early common law decisions and recent developments in other states

Method to provide meta-stable operation of DC microgrid comprising a pulsed load

    Get PDF
A Hamiltonian surface shaping power flow control (HSSPFC) method is used to analyze the meta-stability and adjust pulsed power loads on a DC electric power distribution network. Pulsed power loads are nonlinear, time-variant systems that cause nonlinear limit-cycles. During the on periods of a pulsed load, the system can be in an unstable state and is damped back to stability during the off state of the load. Therefore, over the entire period of the pulse the system may only be assessed as meta-stable. As shown through simulation, HIL and hardware results, the HSSPFC method is more accurate than the other small-signal approaches, such as Eigenvalues, Nyquist, and Floquet theory, and can reveal important details about the transient responses and performance.https://digitalcommons.mtu.edu/patents/1141/thumbnail.jp
