Napomyza gymnostoma Loew (Agromyzidae: Diptera) biology in central Croatia
Let odraslih oblika obiÄno zapoÄinje u drugoj dekadi ožujka i traje do kraja travnja. Let muha jesenske generacije zapoÄinje krajem prve dekade rujna i traje do kraja listopada. NajveÄi intenzitet napada tijekom istraživanja zabilježen je 1999. godine ā 40 liÄinki i kukuljica u jednoj biljci luka, 25 u jednoj biljci poriluka i 14 liÄinki i kukuljica u jednoj biljci vlasca. The leek leaf miner, Phytomyza (Napomza) gymnostoma Loew is an insect of unknown origin. Since the first outbreak of diseased in 1999, this insect has been the dominant pest on onions, and is spread all over Croatia. In some years, it causes considerable economic damage. This paper presents the first description of the biology of Phytomyza gymnostoma in Croatia and the infestation rate on onions, leeks and chives. The research was conducted in the Sisak region and in Zagreb during the period of 1999 ā 2001. It was found that Ph. gymnostoma develops two generations annually ā the spring and autumn generations. The flight of adult flies starts in the second decade of March, and is continuous till the end of April. Females lay eggs a few days after copulation. Larvae that hatch from those eggs are present from the second decade of March till the end of May. After finishing their development, larvae transform into the stage of pupae. This stage lasts till September. The auutumn (second) generation flight starts at the beginning of September and lasts till the end of October. A couple days after copulation, the females lay eggs mostly on leek plants. the auutumn generation eggs are present from mid-September till the end of October. Larvae hatched from those eggs feed inside leek plants during October till mid-November. After finishing their development, the larvae transform into pupae. Pupae overwinter till the next spring and the emergence of new imagos. During the research, the highest infestation was recorded in 1999, when we found 40 larvae and pupae of Ph. gymnostoma per onion plant, 25 larvae and pupae per leek plant and 14 per chive plant. A higher infestation was recorded with untreated onions in smaller gardens than with onion plants grown in larger plantations (12.5 ā 28.5% of all plants were infected with 1.3 ā 1.9 larvae per plant, in average)
Popis vrsta lisnih uŔi natpor. Aphidoidea (Hemiptera, Homoptera, Sternorrhyncha) u Hrvatskoj
A check-list of aphids in Croatia is presented, with a list of references including the unpublished Igrc BarÄiÄ and Dinarina papers on aphid identification in the archives of the Department for Agricultural Zoology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb and the results of Gotlin Äuljak from the period 1996ā1998, performed for the first time in Croatia (GOTLIN ÄULJAK, 2001). In the reference list, 156 species have been described, and there are additional unpublished identifications (Igrc BarÄiÄ described 24 species, Dinarina 6 species). GOTLIN ÄULJAK (2001) described the presence of 83 aphid species, of which 13 are completely new for the Croatian fauna. These are the following species: Callipterinella calliptera Harting, 1841; Callipterinella minutissima Stroyan, 1953; Chaitophorus populeti Panzer, 1805; Drepanosiphum acerinum Walker, 1838; Drepanosiphum aceris Koch, 1855; Drepanosiphum dixoni Hille Ris Lambers, 1971; Eulachnus sp. del Guercio, 1909; Hormaphis betulae Mordvilko, 1901; Hyperomyzus lampsanae Bƶrner, 1932; Macrosiphum gei Koch, 1855; Periphyllus californiensis Shinji, 1917; Tinocallis platani Kaltenbach, 1842 and Tuberculatus (Tuberculoides) moerickei Hille Ris Lambers, 1974. The check-list contains 199 aphid species, categorised in 3 families, 10 subfamilies, 16 tribes and 84 genera. Istraživanje kukuruzne zlatice (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte) u Hrvatskoj (1994. - 2003).
Ten years of research work conducted in the Department for Agricultural Zoology of the Agriculture faculty in Zngreb concerning the western corn rootworm (WCR) resulted in 45 scientific and professional papers published in foreign or national publications and meeting proceedings. All of these publications are rewieved in this paper. The development of the WCR in Croatia and Europe confirms the first statement that this insect pest will develop in Europe even faster than in the USA. This paper is intended to support new research on of the WCR, which is underway in many countries of Europe.
Å titasti moljac agruma, Dialeurodes citri (Ashmead, 1885) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) u mediteranskom dijelu Hrvatske
Dialeurodes citri (Hom. Aleyrodidae) first invaded citrus orchards in the South Adriatic, near Dubrovnik, during 1977. Since the characteristics of the pest have not been studied in Croatia, this paper reviews its morphology, locations, host plant range and biology. Leaf samples, collected all over the Croatian coast and islands, were observed in the laboratory for purpose of creating a map with citrus whitefly locations, morphological description and a list of host plants. The pest biological cycle and population trend were investigated in the region of Split (May 1996-May 1998). The presence of citrus whitefly was confirmed in all citrus-growing areas of Croatia. The number of noted host plants was somewhat lower than in Mediterranean countries. Other than citrus, it also colonised and harmed laurustinus (Viburnum tinus Hemsl.), persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) and several plants of Oleaceae. The citrus whitefly had three generations on citrus per year. However, the part of larval population that belonged to second generation did not finish the post-embryonic development and it remained on the summer flush leaves and awaited the hibernation. The appearance of adults followed the appearance of young citrus growth. All development stages had three population peaks during vegetation period. The presence of young larval stages (L-1, L-2) was pronounced during the middle of June, August and October. The pest overwintered mainly as fourth instar larva. On deciduous persimmon trees it had two generations per year. Osim agruma Å”tetnik je naseljavao i oÅ”teÄivao lempriku (Viburnum tinus Hemsl.), kaki (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) i nekoliko vrsta familije Oleaceae.
