A C-13(alpha,n)O-16 calibration source for KamLAND
We report on the construction and performance of a calibration source for
KamLAND using the reaction C-13(alpha,n)O-16 with Po-210 as the alpha
progenitor. The source provides a direct measurement of this background
reaction in our detector, high energy calibration points for the detector
energy scale, and data on quenching of the neutron visible energy in KamLAND
scintillator. We also discuss the possibility of using the reaction
C-13(alpha,n)O-16 as a source of tagged slow neutrons.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Revised to agree with the published tex
Coronary steal syndrome after coronary artery bypass for anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery.
Anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery found in a symptomatic 9-year-old boy was initially treated with coronary artery bypass grafting using a left internal mammary artery anastomoses to the left anterior descending coronary artery, but resulted in coronary ischemia, likely from a steal phenomenon. Subsequent transection of the proximal left internal mammary artery with anastomosis to the ascending aorta, and coronary ostial enlargement, resulted in a durable treatment. We recommend caution in choosing coronary artery bypass grafting using a left internal mammary artery pedicle graft for the treatment of anomalous aortic origin of a coronary artery
Cosmicflows-2: The Data
Cosmicflows-2 is a compilation of distances and peculiar velocities for over
8000 galaxies. Numerically the largest contributions come from the
luminosity-linewidth correlation for spirals, the TFR, and the related
Fundamental Plane relation for E/S0 systems, but over 1000 distances are
contributed by methods that provide more accurate individual distances:
Cepheid, Tip of the Red Giant Branch, Surface Brightness Fluctuation, SNIa, and
several miscellaneous but accurate procedures. Our collaboration is making
important contributions to two of these inputs: Tip of the Red Giant Branch and
TFR. A large body of new distance material is presented. In addition, an effort
is made to assure that all the contributions, our own and those from the
literature, are on the same scale. Overall, the distances are found to be
compatible with a Hubble Constant H_0 = 74.4 +-3.0 km/s/Mpc. The great interest
going forward with this data set will be with velocity field studies.

Adjuvant Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Invasive Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm of the Pancreas: an Analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Registry
Background: Management and outcomes of patients with invasive intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas are not well established. We investigated whether adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) improved cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) among patients undergoing surgical resection for invasive IPMN. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry was used in this retrospective cohort study. All adult patients with resection of invasive IPMN from 1988 to 2007 were included. CSS and OS were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves. Unadjusted and propensity-score-adjusted Cox proportional-hazards modeling were used for subgroup analyses. Results: 972 patients were included. Adjuvant RT was administered to 31.8% (n=309) of patients. There was no difference in overall median CSS or OS in patients who received adjuvant RT (5-year CSS: 26.5months; 5-year OS: 23.5months) versus those who did not (CSS: 28.5months, P=0.17; OS: 23.5months, P=0.23). Univariate predictors of survival were lymph node (LN) involvement, T4-classified tumors, and poorly differentiated tumor grade (all P<0.05). In the propensity-score-adjusted analysis, adjuvant RT was associated with improved 5-year CSS [hazard ratio (HR): 0.67, P=0.004] and 5-year OS (HR: 0.73, P=0.014) among all patients with LN involvement, though further analysis by T-classification demonstrated no survival differences among patients with T1/T2 disease; patients with T3/T4-classified tumors had improved CSS (HR: 0.71, P=0.022) but no difference in OS (HR: 0.76, P=0.06). Conclusion: On propensity-score-adjusted analysis, adjuvant RT was associated with improved survival in selected subsets of patients with invasive IPMN, particularly those with T3/T4 tumors and LN involvemen
Towards a Realistic, Data-Driven Thermodynamic MHD Model of the Global Solar Corona
In this work we describe our implementation of a thermodynamic energy
equation into the global corona model of the Space Weather Modeling Framework
(SWMF), and its development into the new Lower Corona (LC) model. This work
includes the integration of the additional energy transport terms of coronal
heating, electron heat conduction, and optically thin radiative cooling into
the governing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy equation. We examine two
different boundary conditions using this model; one set in the upper transition
region (the Radiative Energy Balance model), as well as a uniform chromospheric
condition where the transition region can be modeled in its entirety. Via
observation synthesis from model results and the subsequent comparison to full
sun extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-Ray observations of Carrington
Rotation (CR) 1913 centered on Aug 27, 1996, we demonstrate the need for these
additional considerations when using global MHD models to describe the unique
conditions in the low corona. Through multiple simulations we examine ability
of the LC model to asses and discriminate between coronal heating models, and
find that a relative simple empirical heating model is adequate in reproducing
structures observed in the low corona. We show that the interplay between
coronal heating and electron heat conduction provides significant feedback onto
the 3D magnetic topology in the low corona as compared to a potential field
extrapolation, and that this feedback is largely dependent on the amount of
