    Observation of discrete vortex solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices

    We report on the frst experimental observation of discrete vortex solitons in two-dimensional optically-induced photonic lattices.     Driven Tunneling Dynamics: Bloch-Redfield Theory versus Path Integral Approach

    In the regime of weak bath coupling and low temperature we demonstrate numerically for the spin-boson dynamics the equivalence between two widely used but seemingly different roads of approximation, namely the path integral approach and the Bloch-Redfield theory. The excellent agreement between these two methods is corroborated by a novel efficient analytical high-frequency approach: it well approximates the decay of quantum coherence via a series of damped coherent oscillations.     Giant Enhancement of Surface Second Harmonic Generation in BaTiO_3 due to Photorefractive Surface Wave Excitation

    We report observation of strongly enhanced surface SHG in BaTiO_3 due to excitation of a photorefractive surface electromagnetic wave. Surface SH intensity may reach 10^{-2} of the incident fundamental light intensity. Angular, crystal orientation and polarization dependencies of this SHG are presented.     This paper investigates the spatial distributions of electrical current which flows inside the plasma stream generated by a magnetoplasma compressor (MPC). Two different modes of MPC operation with different gas supply scenarios have been applied in the experiments presented here. The first is the operation mode with a pulse injection of xenon into the interelectrode space, and the second is the operation mode with residual helium in the chamber and local injection of xenon directly into the compression zone. The maximum value of the electric current observed outside the MPC channel is 15 ÷ 20% of the total discharge current. Electric current vortices were discovered in the plasma stream. The amplitude of the current in the vortices reaches 50% of the total discharge current. The maximum EUV radiation power was measured in the mode of MPC operation with local xenon injection. Power in the wave range 12.2 ÷ 15.8 nm achieves up to 16 ÷ 18 kW

    Merging Galaxies in the SDSS EDR

    We present a new catalog of merging galaxies obtained through an automated systematic search routine. The 1479 new pairs of merging galaxies were found in approximately 462 sq deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR; Stoughton et al. 2002) photometric data, and the pair catalog is complete for galaxies in the magnitude range 16.0 <= g* <= 20. The selection algorithm, implementing a variation on the original Karachentsev (1972) criteria, proved to be very efficient and fast. Merging galaxies were selected such that the inter-galaxy separations were less than the sum of the component galaxies' radii. We discuss the characteristics of the sample in terms of completeness, pair separation, and the Holmberg effect. We also present an online atlas of images for the SDSS EDR pairs obtained using the corrected frames from the SDSS EDR database. The atlas images also include the relevant data for each pair member. This catalog will be useful for conducting studies of the general characteristics of merging galaxies, their environments, and their component galaxies. The redshifts for a subset of the interacting and merging galaxies and the distribution of angular sizes for these systems indicate the SDSS provides a much deeper sample than almost any other wide-area catalog to date.Comment: 58 pages, which includes 15 figures and 6 tables.     Lumbopelvic transpedicular fixation of vertically unstable pelvic ring injuries

    Introduction Identification of a proper fixation of the posterior pelvic ring is of paramount importance in treatment of patients with vertically unstable pelvic injuries. Material and methods Outcomes of 29 patients with polytrauma and vertically unstable pelvic injuries treated at Level I Trauma Center between 2013 and 2017 were analyzed. The mean age of the patients was 34.8 ± 99 years. The severity of the injuries and patients’ condition were evaluated using Injury Severity Score (ISS), VPKh-P (MT), VPKh-SP, and Yu. N. Tsibin scales (1975) to determine the sequence of treatment and diagnostic procedures. Classification offered by Pape H. C. (2005) was used to evaluate physiological condition. The ISS score was 27.1 ± 9.9. All patients underwent computed tomography (CT) scan of pelvic for preoperative planning. Lumbopelvic transpedicular fixation (LPTF) was employed as a definitive treatment of vertically unstable pelvic ring fractures in all clinical observations. Posterior half-ring morphology, a need for decompression of the nerve roots of the sacral plexus, timing of surgery were considered to decide on LPTF configuration. Results Three-month-to-six-year follow-ups of 22 patients showed good and excellent results achieved in 72.7 % of the cases that are in line with findings reported in the literature. Discussion Biomechanically adequate method of internal fixation is the method of choice in the definitive treatment of vertical unstable pelvic injuries with the possibility of decompression of compromised neural structures. Lumbopelvic fixation with the possibility of simultaneous access for decompression of neural structures is the most optimal technique for these complicated injuries

    Spectroscopic analysis of metabolic profile in patients with relapsed multiple sclerosis

    Introduction. Managing patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RMS) remains a pressing issue. Objective. To detect the reversible metabolic changes of the brain matter in patients with clinically exacerbated RMS and to follow them up after intravenous glucocorticoid (IVGC) treatment. Materials and methods. Neurological examination and neuroimaging in the RMS patients included expanded disability status scale (EDSS) scoring, conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR spectroscopy) before and after IVGC treatment. Multivoxel 1H-NMR spectroscopy was used to assess metabolism in the centra semiovale and cingulate gyri. Results. Based on the multivoxel 1H-NMR spectroscopy, relative metabolite concentrations in the grey and white matter statistically differed within the study cohort before and after the IVGC treatment. The N-acetylaspartate/choline ratio significantly recovered and the choline/creatine ratio decreased in the anterior cingulate gyri in 27% of patients. The brainstem function score significantly improved in the metabolic response group as compared to the non-metabolic response group. Conclusion. We should study the potential predictors of RMS activity and the IVGC response to select the RMS relapses when pulse-therapy with IVGCs is definitely indicated. Spectroscopy may reveal RMS pathogenesis variability earlier than conventional MRI
