The ozone depletion potentials on halocarbons: Their dependence of calculation assumptions
The concept of Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) is widely used in the evaluation of numerous halocarbons and of their replacement effects on ozone, but the methods, assumptions and conditions used in ODP calculations have not been analyzed adequately. In this paper a model study of effects on ozone of the instantaneous releases of various amounts of CH3CCl3 and of CHF2Cl (HCFC-22) for several compositions of the background atmosphere are presented, aimed at understanding connections of ODP values with the assumptions used in their calculations. To facilitate the ODP computation in numerous versions for the long time periods after their releases, the above rather short-lived gases and the one-dimensional radiative photochemical model of the global annually averaged atmospheric layer up to 50 km height are used. The variation of released gas global mass from 1 Mt to 1 Gt leads to ODP value increase with its stabilization close to the upper bound of this range in the contemporary atmosphere. The same variations are analyzed for conditions of the CFC-free atmosphere of 1960's and for the anthropogenically loaded atmosphere in the 21st century according to the known IPCC 'business as usual' scenario. Recommendations for proper ways of ODP calculations are proposed for practically important cases
Investigation of vibratory drilling model with adaptive control. Part 2: mixed control of peak-to-peak vibration displacement and cutting continuity index
Chip segmentation is important condition for deep drilling efficiency improving. Chip segmentation could be ensured by sustaining stable axial self-excited vibrations of a drill. Vibrations are excited by regenerative effect when cutting edges move along the surface formed by previous passes. The conditions required for reliable chip segmentation could be created by using of a special vibratory head with an elastic element, providing tool additional axial flexibility. To maintain stable vibro-process with amplitude sufficient for chip segmentation, it’s suggested to use the vibratory head with a special actuator for adaptive feedback control proportional to a tool vibration velocity. Two algorithms of the feedback gain adaptation are proposed in the present paper: the adaptation by peak-to-peak displacement and the mixed adaptation by peak-to-peak displacement with cutting continuity index. The investigation of effectiveness of the proposed algorithms applicable to the model, described in [9], is also presented
APPLICATION OF VOSYS-OPTIMA SYSTEM COMPONENTS IN CONSTRUCTION OF HARDWARE LAYOUTS OF MONOLATERAL COMBINATION WITH ANGULAR SUPPORT IN CASES OF TREATMENT OF INTRAARTICULAR KNEE FRACTURES AND DISTAL CIRCUMARTICULAR FRACTURES OF THE FEMUR IN DOGS AND CATS
For treatment of prearticular and intraarticular fractures including knee joint area in dogs and cats, as a rule, thin pins, serclage, plates, and their combinations are used depending on fracture area and fracture complexity, which fails to fully provide sufficient stability of osteosynthesis.
Purpose of the study was to study the processes taking place in the joints of operated animals at prolonged blockage with hardware constructions for the period of healing of the prearticular and intraarticular fractures.
Scientific novelty. Based on a comprehensive study, the use of monolateral combination arrangements with angular support for the treatment of intra-articular fractures of the stifle joint, as well as distal periarticular femur fractures in dogs and cats, was evaluated. The feasibility of the need to protect the operated area from force during fracture healing was determined.
Methods. To treat fractures in the knee joint area, polyfunctional monoblocks without a push-back rod, transosseous insertion rods of different diameters depending on the size of the animal, and supports of different diameters with a 125-130° bend were used.
A total of 16 operations were performed, 5 dogs and 11 cats. The dogs came in weighing from 4 to 15 kg. The age was from 5 to 38 months old. The cats were 4 to 41 months old, their weights ranging from 1.2 to 5 kg. The supports used were 3, 4, and 5 mm in diameter.
Results. Contracture of the operated limbs in the animals after removal of the hardware constructs in our study was more or less pronounced in the animals with more than 2 weeks of hardware fixation. We did not find the presence of contracture in animals with hardware structures removed after two weeks, while lameness in these animals could be observed from 3 to 12 days, the loss of muscle mass of the thigh in the form of a decrease in its volume was not observed. The picture was similar for both cats and dogs.
Conclusion. The use of monolateral combinations with angular support for treatment of intraarticular fractures of the knee joint as well as distal circumarticular fractures of the femur in dogs and cats is reasonable in terms of the need to protect the operated area from forceful influences during fracture healing.
The most physiological period of blocking the area of the knee joint with the external fixation apparatus in our study was from 2 to 3 weeks regardless of the age of the animal
2D Molybdenum Carbide MXenes for Enhanced Selective Detection of Humidity in Air
2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) open up novel opportunities in gas sensing with high sensitivity at room temperature. Herein, 2D Mo2CTx flakes with high aspect ratio are successfully synthesized. The chemiresistive effect in a sub-mu m MXene multilayer for different organic vapors and humidity at 10(1)-10(4) ppm in dry air is studied. Reasonably, the low-noise resistance signal allows the detection of H2O down to 10 ppm. Moreover, humidity suppresses the response of Mo2CTx to organic analytes due to the blocking of adsorption active sites. By measuring the impedance of MXene layers as a function of ac frequency in the 10(-2)-10(6) Hz range, it is shown that operation principle of the sensor is dominated by resistance change rather than capacitance variations. The sensor transfer function allows to conclude that the Mo2CTx chemiresistance is mainly originating from electron transport through interflake potential barriers with heights up to 0.2 eV. Density functional theory calculations, elucidating the Mo2C surface interaction with organic analytes and H2O, explain the experimental data as an energy shift of the density of states under the analyte's adsorption which induces increasing electrical resistance
Nuclear Polarization of Molecular Hydrogen Recombined on a Non-metallic Surface
The nuclear polarization of molecules formed by recombination
of nuclear polarized H atoms on the surface of a storage cell initially coated
with a silicon-based polymer has been measured by using the longitudinal
double-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The
molecules are found to have a substantial nuclear polarization, which is
evidence that initially polarized atoms retain their nuclear polarization when
absorbed on this type of surfac
Theory of spin-polarized bipolar transport in magnetic p-n junctions
The interplay between spin and charge transport in electrically and
magnetically inhomogeneous semiconductor systems is investigated theoretically.
In particular, the theory of spin-polarized bipolar transport in magnetic p-n
junctions is formulated, generalizing the classic Shockley model. The theory
assumes that in the depletion layer the nonequilibrium chemical potentials of
spin up and spin down carriers are constant and carrier recombination and spin
relaxation are inhibited. Under the general conditions of an applied bias and
externally injected (source) spin, the model formulates analytically carrier
and spin transport in magnetic p-n junctions at low bias. The evaluation of the
carrier and spin densities at the depletion layer establishes the necessary
boundary conditions for solving the diffusive transport equations in the bulk
regions separately, thus greatly simplifying the problem. The carrier and spin
density and current profiles in the bulk regions are calculated and the I-V
characteristics of the junction are obtained. It is demonstrated that spin
injection through the depletion layer of a magnetic p-n junction is not
possible unless nonequilibrium spin accumulates in the bulk regions--either by
external spin injection or by the application of a large bias. Implications of
the theory for majority spin injection across the depletion layer, minority
spin pumping and spin amplification, giant magnetoresistance, spin-voltaic
effect, biasing electrode spin injection, and magnetic drift in the bulk
regions are discussed in details, and illustrated using the example of a GaAs
based magnetic p-n junction.Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, 2 table
Agrobacterium tumefaciens-Induced Bacteraemia Does Not Lead to Reporter Gene Expression in Mouse Organs
Agrobacterium tumefaciens is the main plant biotechnology gene transfer tool with host range which can be extended to non-plant eukaryotic organisms under laboratory conditions. Known medical cases of Agrobacterium species isolation from bloodstream infections necessitate the assessment of biosafety-related risks of A. tumefaciens encounters with mammalian organisms. Here, we studied the survival of A. tumefaciens in bloodstream of mice injected with bacterial cultures. Bacterial titers of 108 CFU were detected in the blood of the injected animals up to two weeks after intravenous injection. Agrobacteria carrying Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter-based constructs and isolated from the injected mice retained their capacity to promote green fluorescent protein (GFP) synthesis in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. To examine whether or not the injected agrobacteria are able to express in mouse organs, we used an intron-containing GFP (GFPi) reporter driven either by a cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter or by a CaMV 35S promoter. Western and northern blot analyses as well as RT-PCR analysis of liver, spleen and lung of mice injected with A. tumefaciens detected neither GFP protein nor its transcripts. Thus, bacteraemia induced in mice by A. tumefaciens does not lead to detectible levels of genetic transformation of mouse organs
Spintronics: Fundamentals and applications
Spintronics, or spin electronics, involves the study of active control and
manipulation of spin degrees of freedom in solid-state systems. This article
reviews the current status of this subject, including both recent advances and
well-established results. The primary focus is on the basic physical principles
underlying the generation of carrier spin polarization, spin dynamics, and
spin-polarized transport in semiconductors and metals. Spin transport differs
from charge transport in that spin is a nonconserved quantity in solids due to
spin-orbit and hyperfine coupling. The authors discuss in detail spin
decoherence mechanisms in metals and semiconductors. Various theories of spin
injection and spin-polarized transport are applied to hybrid structures
relevant to spin-based devices and fundamental studies of materials properties.
Experimental work is reviewed with the emphasis on projected applications, in
which external electric and magnetic fields and illumination by light will be
used to control spin and charge dynamics to create new functionalities not
feasible or ineffective with conventional electronics.Comment: invited review, 36 figures, 900+ references; minor stylistic changes

Identification of Nedd4 E3 Ubiquitin Ligase as a Binding Partner and Regulator of MAK-V Protein Kinase
MAK-V/Hunk is a scantily characterized AMPK-like protein kinase. Recent findings identified MAK-V as a pro-survival and anti-apoptotic protein and revealed its role in embryonic development as well as in tumorigenesis and metastasis. However molecular mechanisms of MAK-V action and regulation of its activity remain largely unknown. We identified Nedd4 as an interaction partner for MAK-V protein kinase. However, this HECT-type E3 ubiquitin ligase is not involved in the control of MAK-V degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome system that regulates MAK-V abundance in cells. However, Nedd4 in an ubiquitin ligase-independent manner rescued developmental defects in Xenopus embryos induced by MAK-V overexpression, suggesting physiological relevance of interaction between MAK-V and Nedd4. This identifies Nedd4 as the first known regulator of MAK-V function
