    Distal tibial interosseous osteochondroma with impending fracture of fibula – a case report and review of literature

    Osteochondromas arising from the interosseous border of the distal tibia and involving distal fibula are uncommon. We present a 16 year old young boy with an impending fracture, erosion and weakness of the distal fibula, secondary to an osteochondroma arising from the distal tibia. Early excision of this deforming distal tibial osteochondroma avoided the future risk of pathological fracture of the distal fibula, ankle deformities and syndesmotic complications

    Wide resection and stabilization of ulnar stump by extensor carpi ulnaris for giant cell tumor of distal ulna: two case reports

    The distal end of ulna is an extremely uncommon site for primary bone tumors in general and giant cell tumor in particular. Wide resection is usually indicated in such cases and at times it may be necessary to remove of a long segment of the distal ulna. Any ulnar resection proximal to the insertion of pronator quadratus can lead to instability in the form of radio-ulnar convergence and dorsal displacement (winging) of the ulnar stump. This can result in diminution of forearm rotation and weakness with grasp. Stabilization of the ulnar stump after resection for a giant cell tumor was described by Kayias & Drosos. We are adding two more cases to the literature. Both patients had excellent functional outcome and there were no instances of recurrence at three years of follow-up

    Giant cell tumor of talus: a case report

    Giant cell tumor of talus is a rare entity. In contrast to GCT of long bones, most cases occur in a younger age group and tend to be multicentric. The authors report a case of GCT in a 19 year old boy which had led to extensive destruction of the talus. In view of the extensive involvement, total talectomy along with tibio – calcaneal arthrodesis was performed. At 6 months of followup, the patient had a painless and well arthrodesed ankle. There was no evidence of recurrence at 18 months of followup

    Use of Universal Mini External Fixator in the Management of Postosteomyelitic Defects in Short Tubular Bones in the Paediatric Population

    Background/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of reconstruction of postosteomyelitic defects in short tubular bones in a paediatric population using a universal mini external fixator (UMEX). Methods: This was a prospective case series based on 10 consecutive cases who were followed-up for an average period of 3.5 years. Ten patients (mean age: 10.2 years) with an average shortening of 4 cm of the corresponding digit were operated upon using soft tissue distraction by UMEX followed by interposition bone grafting from the iliac crest. The second metacarpal was involved in five patients, the first metacarpal in three patients, and the proximal phalanx of the right big toe was involved in two patients. Results: All of the patients achieved union at the graft host site at an average of 12 weeks and an average of 3.8 cm lengthening of the digit was achieved. All patients had improved digit length, and function and appearance of the hand and toe. Apart from a minor pin tract infection and stiffness, there were no major complications. Final average follow-up at 3.5 years did not show any recurrence of infection or loss of correction. Conclusion: We believe that UMEX is a versatile method of managing postosteomyelitic defects in short tubular bones, with fewer complications and a high union rate, even in situations in which bone fragments are small and difficult to handle with other methods

    Thyroid autoimmunity and subclinical hypothyroidism in prolactinoma: A case control study

    Background: This study was aimed at determining the frequency of thyroid autoimmunity and subclinical hypothyroidism in patients with hyperprolactinemia due to prolactinoma compared to well-matched healthy controls. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study wherein 78 treatment naïve prolactinoma patients and ninety-two healthy control subjects were recruited. Serum prolactin (PRL), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total thyroxine (T4), circulating anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibody levels were measured in all study subjects. Progression of the antibody-positive population to subclinical hypothyroidism was determined. Results: The median PRL level among patients was 166 ng/ml (IQR 85-467) compared to 11.4 ng/ml (IQR 8.5-15.9) in controls (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in levels of T4 (P = 0.83) and TSH (P = 0.82) between the cases and controls. Overall, 25% of patients had the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies as compared to 20% of controls (P = 0.56). SCH was more common in antibody-positive hyperprolactinemia subjects compared with antibody-positive controls. Conclusion: We did not find an increased prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity among untreated prolactinoma patients compared to healthy controls. At the same time, subclinical hypothyroidism was more common in thyroid antibody-positive patients with hyperprolactinemia than positive controls

    Estimation of yield, phenology and agro-meteorological indices of Quality Protein Maize (Zea mays L.) under different nutrient omissions in temperate ecology of Kashmir

    The major yield governing factors especially under rainfed ecosystem are the agro-meteorological indices. Hence, an experiment was conducted in 2021 kharif season to examine the impact of nutrient omission on phenology, yield and agro-meteorological indices of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) under the North Western Himalayas of India at the Agronomy farm of FoA (Faculty of Agriculture), Wadoora, Sopore, SKUAST-Kashmir. Eight treatments were used in the experiment viz. (T1-Absolute control, T2-N120P75K40, T3-N120P75K40Zn5S10, T4-P75K40Zn5S10 (-N), T5-N120K40Zn5S10 (-P), T6-N120P75Zn5S10 (-K), T7-N120P75K40S10 (-Zn) and T8-N120P75K40Zn5 (-S)), using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results demonstrated that recommended dose of fertilizer plus zinc and sulphur (T3-N120P75K40Zn5S10) noted higher grain (9.78 t ha−1) and biological (22.05 t ha−1) yield, a longer period of time to reach various phonological stages thereby achieved maximum heat units or growing degree days (GDD), heliothermal units (HTU), photo-thermal units (PTU), pheno-thermal index (PTI) and heat use efficiency (HUE). Nitrogen was the most limiting nutrient thereby accumulating least heat units and HUE. The agrometeorological indices could be therefore helpful in predicting the phenology and maize yield. The outcomes of the experiment showed that using the recommended fertilizer dosage plus zinc and sulphur in QPM should be adopted to attain higher yield under the North Western Himalayas of India, However, additional agro-ecological study is required to further validate the findings
