The Solar Neighborhood XIII: Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9-m Program -- Stars with mu >= 1"/year (MOTION Sample)
We present the first set of definitive trigonometric parallaxes and proper
motions from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax Investigation
(CTIOPI). Full astrometric reductions for the program are discussed, including
methods of reference stars selection, differential color refraction
corrections, and conversion of relative to absolute parallax. Using data
acquired at the 0.9-m at CTIO, full astrometric solutions and
photometry are presented for 36 red and white dwarf stellar systems with proper
motions faster than 1\farcs0/yr. Of these, thirty three systems have the first
ever trigonometric parallaxes, which comprise 41% of MOTION systems (those with
proper motions greater than 1\farcs0/yr) south of 0 that have no
parallaxes. Four of the systems are new members of the RECONS 10 pc sample for
which the first accurate trigonometric parallaxes are published here: DENIS
J1048-3956 (4.04 0.03 pc), GJ 1128 (LHS 271, 6.53 0.10 pc), GJ 1068
(LHS 22, 6.97 0.09 pc), and GJ 1123 (LHS 263, 9.02 0.16 pc). In
addition, two red subdwarf-white dwarf pairs, LHS 193AB and LHS 300AB, are
identified. The white dwarf secondaries fall in a previously uncharted region
of the HR diagram.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures, accepted to The Astronomical Journal (scheduled

The Solar Neighborhood. XXXIV. A Search for Planets Orbiting Nearby M Dwarfs using Astrometry
Astrometric measurements are presented for seven nearby stars with previously
detected planets: six M dwarfs (GJ 317, GJ 667C, GJ 581, GJ 849, GJ 876, and GJ
1214) and one K dwarf (BD 10 3166). Measurements are also presented for six
additional nearby M dwarfs without known planets, but which are more favorable
to astrometric detections of low mass companions, as well as three binary
systems for which we provide astrometric orbit solutions. Observations have
baselines of three to thirteen years, and were made as part of the RECONS
long-term astrometry and photometry program at the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9m telescope.
We provide trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for all 16 systems, and
perform an extensive analysis of the astrometric residuals to determine the
minimum detectable companion mass for the 12 M dwarfs not having close stellar
secondaries. For the six M dwarfs with known planets, we are not sensitive to
planets, but can rule out the presence of all but the least massive brown
dwarfs at periods of 2 - 12 years. For the six more astrometrically favorable M
dwarfs, we conclude that none have brown dwarf companions, and are sensitive to
companions with masses as low as 1 for periods longer than two years.
In particular, we conclude that Proxima Centauri has no Jovian companions at
orbital periods of 2 - 12 years. These results complement previously published
M dwarf planet occurrence rates by providing astrometrically determined upper
mass limits on potential super-Jupiter companions at orbits of two years and
longer. As part of a continuing survey, these results are consistent with the
paucity of super-Jupiter and brown dwarf companions we find among the over 250
red dwarfs within 25 pc observed longer than five years in our astrometric
program.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A
The Solar Neighborhood. XXXIX. Parallax Results from the CTIOPI and NOFS Programs: 50 New Members of the 25 Parsec White Dwarf Sample
We present 114 trigonometric parallaxes for 107 nearby white dwarf (WD)
systems from both the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax
Investigation (CTIOPI) and the U. S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station (NOFS)
parallax programs. Of these, 76 parallaxes for 69 systems were measured by the
CTIOPI program and 38 parallaxes for as many systems were measured by the NOFS
program. A total of 50 systems are confirmed to be within the 25 pc horizon of
interest. Coupled with a spectroscopic confirmation of a common proper motion
companion to a Hipparcos star within 25 pc as well as confirmation parallax
determinations for two WD systems included in the recently released Tycho Gaia
Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalog, we add 53 new systems to the 25 pc WD
sample a 42% increase. Our sample presented here includes four strong
candidate halo systems, a new metal-rich DAZ WD, a confirmation of a recently
discovered nearby short-period (P = 2.85 hr) double degenerate, a WD with a new
astrometric pertubation (long period, unconstrained with our data), and a new
triple system where the WD companion main-sequence star has an astrometric
perturbation (P 1.6 yr).Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures. Figure 4 in the manuscript is a representative
set of plots - plots for all WDs presented here are available
(allfits_photo.pdf, allfits_photo_DQ.pdf, and allfits_photo_DZ.pdf). Accepted

The Solar Neighborhood XVII: Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9m Program -- Twenty New Members of the RECONS 10 Parsec Sample
Astrometric measurements for 25 red dwarf systems are presented, including
the first definitive trigonometric parallaxes for 20 systems within 10 pc of
the Sun, the horizon of the RECONS sample. The three nearest systems that had
no previous trigonometric parallaxes (other than perhaps rough preliminary
efforts) are SO 0253+1652 (3.84 +/- 0.04 pc, the 23rd nearest system), SCR
1845-6357 AB (3.85 +/- 0.02 pc, 24th), and LHS 1723 (5.32 +/- 0.04 pc, 56th).
In total, seven of the systems reported here rank among the nearest 100 stellar
systems. Supporting photometric and spectroscopic observations have been made
to provide full characterization of the systems, including complete VRIJHK
photometry and spectral types. A study of the variability of 27 targets reveals
six obvious variable stars, including GJ 1207, for which we observed a flare
event in the V band that caused it to brighten by 1.7 mag.
Improved parallaxes for GJ 54 AB and GJ 1061, both important members of the
10 pc sample, are also reported. Definitive parallaxes for GJ 1001 A, GJ 633,
and GJ 2130 ABC, all of which have been reported to be within 10 pc, indicate
that they are beyond 10 pc. From the analysis of systems with (previously) high
trigonometric parallax errors, we conclude that parallaxes with errors in
excess of 10 mas are insufficiently reliable for inclusion in the RECONS
sample. The cumulative total of new additions to the 10 pc sample since 2000 is
now 34 systems -- 28 by the RECONS team and six by other groups. This total
represents a net increase of 16% in the number of stellar systems reliably
known to be nearer than 10 pc.Comment: 33 pages, including 3 figures and 3 table
The Solar Neighborhood. XXXX. Parallax Results from the CTIOPI 0.9 m Program: New Young Stars Near the Sun
As a step toward completing and characterizing the census of the solar neighborhood, we present astrometric, photometric, and spectroscopic observations of 32 systems observed with the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 0.9 m and 1.5 m telescopes. Astrometry from the 0.9 m indicates that among the 17 systems that had no previous published trigonometric parallaxes, 14 are within 25 pc. In the full sample, nine systems have proper motions larger than 0.â5 yr^(â1), including 2MASS J02511490-0352459, which exceeds 2.â0 yr^(â1). VRI photometry from the 0.9 m and optical spectra from the 1.5 m indicate that the targets have V = 11â22 mag and spectral types M3.0VâL3.0V. For 2MASS J23062928-0502285 (TRAPPIST-1), we present updated astrometry and photometric variability based on over 12 years of observations. Of the nine binaries in the sample, two promise mass determinations in the next decade: LHS 6167AB, an M4.5V system for which we present an accurate parallax placing the binary at 9.7 pc, and 2MASS J23515048-2537367AB, an M8.5V system at 21.1 pc for which we present the first evidence of an unseen, low-mass companion. Most importantly, Na I and K I gravity indicators, Hα measurements, long-term photometric variability, locations on the H-R diagram, and kinematic assessments indicate that as many as 13 of the systems are young, including candidate members of young moving groups, with ages less than ~120 Myr
The Solar Neighborhood. XXXVIII. Results from the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9 m: Trigonometric Parallaxes for 151 Nearby M Dwarf Systems
We present 160 new trigonometric parallaxes for 151 M dwarf systems from the REsearch Consortium On Nearby Stars (RECONS) group's long-term astrometry/photometry program at the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9 m telescope. Most systems (124 or 82%) are found to lie within 25 pc. The stars have 119 mas yr^(-1) †Ό †828 mas yr^(â1) and 3.85 †(V-K) †8.47. Among these are 58 systems from the SuperCOSMOS-RECONS search, discovered via our proper motion trawls of the SuperCOSMOS digitized archival photographic plates, while the remaining stars were suspected via photometric distance estimates to lie nearby. Sixteen systems were newly discovered via astrometric perturbations to be binaries, many of which are ideal for accurate mass determinations due to their proximity and orbital periods on the order of a decade. A variability analysis of the stars presented, two-thirds of which are new results, shows six of the stars to vary by more than 20 mmag. This effort brings the total number of parallaxes for M dwarf systems measured by RECONS to nearly 500 and increases by 26% the number of southern M dwarf systems with accurate trigonometric parallaxes placing them within 25 pc
