Hydatid disease is a severe parasitic disease with a widely ranging distribution. In the human being the liver is the most frequent organ affected. 1 The treatment should be individualized to the morphology, size, number and location of the cysts, that is why a variety of surgical operations have been advocated from complete resection like total pericystectomy or partial hepatectomy to laparoscopy to a minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous aspiration of cysts to conservative drug therapy. 3-4 This study compares laparoscopic versus open management of the hydatid cyst of liver the surgical approach to liver echinococcosis is still a controversial issue and shows our results of surgical treatment of liver hydatid cysts during a 3-years period

Evaluating the expression of urokinase and tissue leukocyte being in benign and malignant breast disease

    Get PDF
Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of the expression of uPA in the malignant tissue and therefore a potential indicator of prognosis. Methods: We examined the expression of uPa in leukocytes and tissues of three groups of women: with breast cancer; with benign breast lesion and healthy women (control group). We used RT Real Time PCR assay. The expression of urokinase is significantly higher in malignant breast lumps compared to benign lesions. However, in women with carcinoma of the breast, malignant tissue expresses higher amounts of uPA than the healthy counterpart. There are no statistically significant differences in the expression of uPA, between tissues taken from women with benign lesions. The lymphocytes taken from healthy volunteers show a level of expression of uPA significantly lower than the other tested samples Lymphocytes extracted from cancer patients express higher amounts of uPA compared to lymphocytes belonging to women with benign breast lesions. The expression of uPA was compared with the clinical and biological parameters commonly used in clinical practice for the definition of the prognosis. The only exception found, concerns those tumors characterized by the simultaneous negativity for estrogen receptors, progesterone and HER2 (state of triple negative), in which the expression of uPA is very high. Results and conclusions: Our data show that uPA expressed by leukocytes of each individual patient is the mirror image of the one expressed by malignant nodular uPA.Introduction: Our objectives is to show that the expression of uPA leukocyte could be considered, in the future, as a marker of the expression of uPA in the malignant tissue and therefore a potential indicator of prognosis. Abstract We report a rare case of primary Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) of the submandibular gland, with initially diagnosis of Kuttner’s Syndrom. A 48 years old man was referred to our hospital foe evaluation of a submandibular mass. Although the initial Fine Needle Aspiration and subsequent cytology was highly suggestive for a cronic sialadenitis with lymphoid cells. After surgical gland removal we obtained a definitive diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in submandibular gland a seat where the most common lymphoma tipe is B

SGR 0418+5729, Swift J1822.3-1606, and 1E 2259+586 as massive fast rotating highly magnetized white dwarfs

Following Malheiro et al. (2012) we describe the so-called low magnetic field magnetars, SGR 0418+5729, Swift J1822.3--1606, as well as the AXP prototype 1E 2259+586 as massive fast rotating highly magnetized white dwarfs. We give bounds for the mass, radius, moment of inertia, and magnetic field for these sources by requesting the stability of realistic general relativistic uniformly rotating configurations. Based on these parameters, we improve the theoretical prediction of the lower limit of the spindown rate of SGR 0418+5729; for a white dwarf close to its maximum stable we obtain the very stringent interval for the spindown rate of 4.1E-16< dP/dt < 6E-15, where the upper value is the known observational limit. A lower limit has been also set for Swift J1822.3-1606 for which a fully observationally accepted spin-down rate is still lacking. The white dwarf model provides for this source dP/dt> 2.13E-15, if the star is close to its maximum stable mass. We also present the theoretical expectation of the infrared, optical and ultraviolet emission of these objects and show their consistency with the current available observational data. We give in addition the frequencies at which absorption features could be present in the spectrum of these sources as the result of the scattering of photons with the quantized electrons by the surface magnetic field.Comment: to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysic

Ball-Handling in water polo and relationship to swimming

    Get PDF
Water polo is a collective sport and efforts of high intensity are rnade in less duration and the skill that is usedfor the majority of the game is swimming. The obiective of this study is to demonstrate that training for water polo athletes is most effective when done always in the presence of the ball, as the ball-handling does not adversely affect the timing. Eleven well-trained competitive athletes were recruited and asked to swim thetestof the 3ÀAfastest (15 repsof 2Ăčmeters), one time with baU, and one time without ball. Results can be read in correlation to athletes anamnesis, that incidence of ball-handling is significant only in athletes who have a swimming-oriented athletic history, but there are not significant dffirences in times for athletes who have a water polo-oriented athlaic history. Some water polo athletes realized systematically smaller times when they swim with ball The results show as this study can help the coach to train the team for improving the analyzed skills in different mode, creating a methodological system training to enhance the performance. Coaches are suggested to carefully monitor swirnming rhythm during trials, and to incrernent ball-handling in every training condition

Combining Hyperspectral Imaging and Small Unmanned Aerial Systems for Grapevine Moisture Stress Assessment

It has been shown that mild water deficit in grapevine contributes to wine quality, in terms of especially grape and subsequent wine flavor. Water deficit irrigation and selective harvesting are implemented to optimize quality, but these approaches require rigorous measurement of vine water status. While traditional in-field physiological measurements have made operational implementation onerous, modern small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) have presented the unique opportunity for rigorous management across vast areas. This study sought to fuse hyperspectral remote sensing, sUAS, and sound multivariate analysis techniques for the purposes of assessing grapevine water status. High-spatial and -spectral resolution hyperspectral data were collected in the visible/near-infrared (VNIR; 400-1000nm) and short-wave infrared (SWIR; 950-2500 nm) spectral regions across three flight days at a commercial vineyard in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. A pressure chamber was used to collect traditional field measurements of stem water potential (ψstem) during image acquisition. We completed some preliminary exploration of spectral smoothing, signal-to-noise ratio, and calibration techniques in forging our experimental design. We then correlated our hyperspectral data with a limited stress range (wet growing season) of traditional measurements for ψstem using multiple linear regression (R2 between 0.34 and 0.55) and partial least squares regression (R2 between 0.36 and 0.39). We demonstrated statistically significant trends in our experiment, further qualifying the potential of hyperspectral data, collected via sUAS, for the purposes of grapevine water management. There was indication that the chlorophyll and carotenoid absorption regions in the VNIR, as well as several SWIR water band regions warrant further exploration. This work was limited since we did not have access to experimentally-controlled plots, and future work should ensure a full range of water stress. Ultimately, models will need validation in different vineyards with a full range of plant stress

Multi-rendezvous Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization with Beam P-ACO

The design of spacecraft trajectories for missions visiting multiple celestial bodies is here framed as a multi-objective bilevel optimization problem. A comparative study is performed to assess the performance of different Beam Search algorithms at tackling the combinatorial problem of finding the ideal sequence of bodies. Special focus is placed on the development of a new hybridization between Beam Search and the Population-based Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. An experimental evaluation shows all algorithms achieving exceptional performance on a hard benchmark problem. It is found that a properly tuned deterministic Beam Search always outperforms the remaining variants. Beam P-ACO, however, demonstrates lower parameter sensitivity, while offering superior worst-case performance. Being an anytime algorithm, it is then found to be the preferable choice for certain practical applications.Comment: Code available at https://github.com/lfsimoes/beam_paco__gtoc

On-orbit assembly using superquadric potential fields

    Get PDF
The autonomous on-orbit assembly of a large space structure is presented using a method based on superquadric artificial potential fields. The final configuration of the elements which form the structure is represented as the minimum of some attractive potential field. Each element of the structure is then considered as presenting an obstacle to the others using a superquadric potential field attached to the body axes of the element. A controller is developed which ensures that the global potential field decreases monotonically during the assembly process. An error quaternion representation is used to define both the attractive and superquadric obstacle potentials allowing the final configuration of the elements to be defined through both relative position and orientation. Through the use of superquadric potentials, a wide range of geometric objects can be represented using a common formalism, while collision avoidance can make use of both translational and rotation maneuvers to reduce total maneuver cost for the assembly process
