    On the causes of economic growth in Europe: why did agricultural labour productivity not converge between 1950 and 2005?

    The objective of this study is to make a further contribution to the debate on the causes of economic growth in the European Continent. It explains why agricultural labour productivity differences did not converge between 1950 and 2005 in Europe. We propose an econometric model, one combining both proximate and fundamental causes of economic growth. The results show that the continuous exit of labour power from the sector, coupled with the increased use of productive factors originating in other sectors of the economy, caused the efficiency of agricultural workers to rise. However, we offer a complete explanation of the role played by institutions and geographical factors. Thus, we detect a direct and inverse relation between membership of the EU and the Communist bloc and the productivity of agricultural labour.     Phylogenetic and Morphologic Analyses of a Coastal Fish Reveals a Marine Biogeographic Break of Terrestrial Origin in the Southern Caribbean

    Marine allopatric speciation involves interplay between intrinsic organismal properties and extrinsic factors. However, the relative contribution of each depends on the taxon under study and its geographic context. Utilizing sea catfishes in the Cathorops mapale species group, this study tests the hypothesis that both reproductive strategies conferring limited dispersal opportunities and an apparent geomorphologic barrier in the Southern Caribbean have promoted speciation in this group from a little studied area of the world.Mitochondrial gene sequences were obtained from representatives of the Cathorops mapale species group across its distributional range from Colombia to Venezuela. Morphometric and meristic analyses were also done to assess morphologic variation. Along a approximately 2000 km transect, two major lineages, Cathorops sp. and C. mapale, were identified by levels of genetic differentiation, phylogenetic reconstructions, and morphological analyses. The lineages are separated by approximately 150 km at the Santa Marta Massif (SMM) in Colombia. The northward displacement of the SMM into the Caribbean in the early Pleistocene altered the geomorphology of the continental margin, ultimately disrupting the natural habitat of C. mapale. The estimated approximately 0.86 my divergence of the lineages from a common ancestor coincides with the timing of the SMM displacement at approximately 0.78 my.Results presented here support the hypothesis that organismal properties as well as extrinsic factors lead to diversification of the Cathorops mapale group along the northern coast of South America. While a lack of pelagic larval stages and ecological specialization are forces impacting this process, the identification of the SMM as contributing to allopatric speciation in marine organisms adds to the list of recognized barriers in the Caribbean. Comparative examination of additional Southern Caribbean taxa, particularly those with varying life history traits and dispersal capabilities, will determine the extent by which the SMM has influenced marine phylogeography in the region

    Green Tea, Phytic Acid, and Inositol in Combination Reduced the Incidence of Azoxymethane-Induced Colon Tumors in Fisher 344 Male Rats

    Experimental as well as epidemiologic studies in human populations provide evidence that consumption of phytochemicals reduces the incidence of degenerative diseases. Green tea (GT) catechins are known for their antioxidative potential. Phytic acid (PA) also acts as a natural antioxidant and may have numerous health benefits. This experiment was designed to investigate the inhibitory effects of combinations of 1% and 2% GT, PA, and inositol (I) in reducing the incidence of azoxymethane-induced colon tumors in Fisher 344 male rats. After an acclimatization period of 1 week, nine groups of rats (15 rats per group) were initially assigned to consume AIN 93 G diet and later AIN 93 M diet after 20 weeks of age. Treatments were given in drinking water. All rats received azoxymethane injections (16 mg/kg of body weight) subcutaneously at 7 and 8 weeks of age. Rats were killed at 45 weeks of age by CO2 euthanasia. Tumor incidence (93.76%) and the number of tumors per tumor-bearing rat ratio (2.25) were significantly (P<.05) higher in the control group compared with treatment groups. Glutathione S-transferase activity was significantly (P<.05) higher in rats fed combinations of 2% GT+PA+I and GT+PA (33.25±1.23 and 29.83±1.10 μmol/mL, respectively) compared with other groups. These findings suggest that the synergistic effect of the 2% level of GT, PA, and I may reduce the incidence of colon tumors and therefore have potential as a chemopreventive agent

    Voluntary movements in Parkinson's disease are initiated and executed slowly. it is assumed that the motor cortex and its output pathway are intact and that bradykinesia is due to abnormal motor commands delivered to a normal corticospinal system. We have tested this assumption using electrical stimulation of the motor cortex through the scalp in three patients with severe Parkinson's disease, studied during fluctuations from relatively normal mobility when receiving drugs (ON) to severe bradykinesia when not receiving drugs (OFF). Thresholds and latencies for motor cortex stimulation to excite thumb flexor muscles and the resulting fast mechanical responses were the same in both ON and OFF conditions, even though the patients were unable to execute fast thumb flexion movements voluntarily when OFF. We conclude that the excitability and conduction velocity of the corticospinal motor pathways are normal in Parkinson's disease

    Estimation of the Effective Permeability of Heterogeneous Porous Media by Using Percolation Concepts

    In this paper we present new methods to estimate the effective permeability (k_eff) of heterogeneous porous media with a wide distribution of permeabilities and various underlying structures, using percolation concepts. We first set a threshold permeability (k_th) on the permeability density function (pdf) and use standard algorithms from percolation theory to check whether the high permeable grid blocks (i.e. those with permeability higher than k_th) with occupied fraction of “p” first forms a cluster connecting two opposite sides of the system in the direction of the flow (high permeability flow pathway). Then we estimate the effective permeability of the heterogeneous porous media in different ways: a power law (k_eff=k_th p^m), a weighted power average (k_eff=[p.k_th^m+(1-p).k_g^m ]^(1/m) with k_g the geometric average of the permeability distribution) and a characteristic shape factor multiplied by the permeability threshold value. We found that the characteristic parameters (i.e. the exponent “m”) can be inferred either from the statistics and properties of percolation sub-networks at the threshold point (i.e. high and low permeable regions corresponding to those permeabilities above and below the threshold permeability value) or by comparing the system properties with an uncorrelated random field having the same permeability distribution. These physically based approaches do not need fitting to the experimental data of effective permeability measurements to estimate the model parameter (i.e. exponent m) as is usually necessary in empirical methods. We examine the order of accuracy of these methods on different layers of 10th SPE model and found very good estimates as compared to the values determined from the commercial flow simulators
