User-determined end of net life in Senegal: a qualitative assessment of decision-making related to the retirement of expired nets
Abstract
Background
Procurement and distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in the African region has decreased from 145 million in 2010 to 66 million nets in 2012. As resources for LLIN distribution appear to stagnate, it is important to understand the users’ perception of the life span of a net and at what point and why they stop using it. In order to get the most value out of distributed nets and to ensure that they are used for as long as possible, programmes must communicate to users about how to assess useful net life and how to extend it.
Methods
Data were collected from 114 respondents who participated in 56 in-depth interviews (IDIs) and eight focus group discussions (FGDs) in August 2012 in eight regions in Senegal. Households were eligible for the study if they owned at least one net and had an available household member over the age of 18. Data were coded by a team of four coders in ATLAS.ti using a primarily deductive approach.
Results
Respondents reported assessing useful net life using the following criteria: the age of net, the number and size of holes and the presence of mosquitoes in the net at night. If they had the means to do so, many respondents preferred the acquisition of a new net rather than the continued use of a very torn net. However, respondents would preferentially use newer nets, saving older, but useable nets for the future or sharing them with family or friends. Participants reported observing alternative uses of nets, primarily for nets that were considered expired.
Conclusions
The results indicate that decisions regarding the end of net life vary among community members in Senegal, but are primarily related to net integrity. Additional research is needed into user-determined end of net life as well as care and repair behaviours, which could extend useful net life. The results from this study and from future research on this topic should be used to understand current behaviours and develop communication programmes to prolong the useful life of nets.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112729/1/12936_2013_Article_2942.pd
A Quantitative Comparison of SMC, LMC, and Milky Way UV to NIR Extinction Curves
We present an exhaustive, quantitative comparison of all of the known
extinction curves in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) with
our understanding of the general behavior of Milky Way extinction curves. The
R_V dependent CCM relationship and the sample of extinction curves used to
derive this relationship is used to describe the general behavior of Milky Way
extinction curves. The ultraviolet portion of the SMC and LMC extinction curves
are derived from archival IUE data, except for one new SMC extinction curve
which was measured using HST/STIS observations. The optical extinction curves
are derived from new (for the SMC) and literature UBVRI photometry (for the
LMC). The near-infrared extinction curves are calculated mainly from 2MASS
photometry supplemented with DENIS and new JHK photometry. For each extinction
curve, we give R_V = A(V)/E(B-V) and N(HI) values which probe the same dust
column as the extinction curve. We compare the properties of the SMC and LMC
extinction curves with the CCM relationship three different ways: each curve by
itself, the behavior of extinction at different wavelengths with R_V, and
behavior of the extinction curve FM fit parameters with R_V. As has been found
previously, we find that a small number of LMC extinction curves are consistent
with the CCM relationship, but majority of the LMC and all of the SMC curves do
not follow the CCM relationship. For the first time, we find that the CCM
relationship seems to form a bound on the properties of all of the LMC and SMC
extinction curves. This result strengthens the picture of dust extinction
curves exhibit a continuum of properties between those found in the Milky Way

X-Ray Spectral Study of AGN Sources Content in Some Deep Extragalactic XMM-Newton Fields
We undertake a spectral study of a sample of bright X-ray sources taken from
six XMM-Newton fields at high galactic latitudes, where AGN are the most
populous class. These six fields were chosen such that the observation had an
exposure time more than 60 ksec, had data from the EPIC-pn detector in the
full-Frame mode and lying at high galactic latitude . The analysis
started by fitting the spectra of all sources with an absorbed power-law model,
and then we fitted all the spectra with an absorbed power-law with a low energy
black-body component model.The sources for which we added a black body gave an
F-test probability of 0.01 or less (i.e. at 99% confidence level), were
recognized as sources that display soft excess. We perform a comparative
analysis of soft excess spectral parameters with respect to the underlying
power-law one for sources that satisfy this criterion. Those sources, that do
not show evidence for a soft excess, based on the F-test probability at a 99%
confidence level, were also fitted with the absorbed power-law with a low
energy black-body component model with the black-body temperature fixed at 0.1
and 0.2 keV. We establish upper limits on the soft excess flux for those
sources at these two temperatures. Finally we have made use of Aladdin
interactive sky atlas and matching with NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED)
to identify the X-ray sources in our sample. For those sources which are
identified in the NED catalogue, we make a comparative study of the soft excess
phenomenon for different types of systems
From dislocation nucleation to dislocation multiplication in ceramic nanoparticle
Magnesium oxide nanocubes are compressed along the [001] direction in situ in the transmission electron microscope. Incipient plasticity in the smaller samples is characterized by the nucleation of few 1/2{110}
dislocations while a larger number of line defects is observed in larger nanocubes. Yield and flow stresses scattered stochastically above a minimum value varying as the inverse of the sample size. The upper bound is given by the reduced number of dislocation sources. Such size-dependent behaviour is justified by a detailed statistical analysis and is fully explained by the deformation mechanism
Decitabine impact on the endocytosis regulator RhoA, the folate carriers RFC1 and FOLR1, and the glucose transporter GLUT4 in human tumors.
BackgroundIn 31 solid tumor patients treated with the demethylating agent decitabine, we performed tumor biopsies before and after the first cycle of decitabine and used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to assess whether decitabine increased expression of various membrane transporters. Resistance to chemotherapy may arise due to promoter methylation/downregulation of expression of transporters required for drug uptake, and decitabine can reverse resistance in vitro. The endocytosis regulator RhoA, the folate carriers FOLR1 and RFC1, and the glucose transporter GLUT4 were assessed.ResultsPre-decitabine RhoA was higher in patients who had received their last therapy >3 months previously than in patients with more recent prior therapy (P = 0.02), and varied inversely with global DNA methylation as assessed by LINE1 methylation (r = -0.58, P = 0.006). Tumor RhoA scores increased with decitabine (P = 0.03), and RFC1 also increased in patients with pre-decitabine scores ≤150 (P = 0.004). Change in LINE1 methylation with decitabine did not correlate significantly with change in IHC scores for any transporter assessed. We also assessed methylation of the RFC1 gene (alias SLC19A1). SLC19A1 methylation correlated with tumor LINE1 methylation (r = 0.45, P = 0.02). There was a small (statistically insignificant) decrease in SLC19A1 methylation with decitabine, and there was a trend towards change in SLC19A1 methylation with decitabine correlating with change in LINE1 methylation (r = 0.47, P <0.15). While SLC19A1 methylation did not correlate with RFC1 scores, there was a trend towards an inverse correlation between change in SLC19A1 methylation and change in RFC1 expression (r = -0.45, P = 0.19).ConclusionsIn conclusion, after decitabine administration, there was increased expression of some (but not other) transporters that may play a role in chemotherapy uptake. Larger patient numbers will be needed to define the extent to which this increased expression is associated with changes in DNA methylation
Permeating the social justice ideals of equality and equity within the context of Early Years: challenges for leadership in multi-cultural and mono-cultural primary schools
The ideology and commitment of social justice principles is central to Early Years practice, however, the term social justice in education is complex and remains contested. This paper explores the ideology of social justice through links between equality and equity and how it is embedded within Early Years, and what remain the potential challenges for leadership. Interviews in English multi-cultural and mono-cultural primary schools were conducted. Findings showed that the ideology of social justice, equality and equity was interpreted differently. Multi-cultural schools appear to use a greater variety of activities to embed social justice principles that involved their diverse communities more to enrich the curriculum. In mono-cultural schools leadership had to be more creative in promoting equality and equity given the smaller proportion of their diverse pupil and staff population. Tentative conclusions suggest that the vision for permeating equality and equity in Early Years, at best, is at early stages
Discrimination between hypervirulent and non-hypervirulent ribotypes of Clostridioides difficile by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and machine learning
Hypervirulent ribotypes (HVRTs) of Clostridioides difcile such as ribotype (RT) 027 are epidemiologically important.
This study evaluated whether MALDI-TOF can distinguish between strains of HVRTs and non-HVRTs commonly found
in Europe. Obtained spectra of clinical C. difcile isolates (training set, 157 isolates) covering epidemiologically relevant
HVRTs and non-HVRTs found in Europe were used as an input for diferent machine learning (ML) models. Another 83
isolates were used as a validation set. Direct comparison of MALDI-TOF spectra obtained from HVRTs and non-HVRTs
did not allow to discriminate between these two groups, while using these spectra with certain ML models could diferentiate HVRTs from non-HVRTs with an accuracy >95% and allowed for a sub-clustering of three HVRT subgroups (RT027/
RT176, RT023, RT045/078/126/127). MALDI-TOF combined with ML represents a reliable tool for rapid identifcation of
