Soil and Water as Resources: How Landscape Architecture Reclaims Hydric Contaminated Soil for Public Uses in Urban Settlements

Soil is one of the fundamental components for life on Earth, but today, as a consequence of humans’ unsustainable actions, soil is polluted, distressed and spoiled. In contemporary practice design, we recognize the importance of the soil quality to structure new discourses in landscape practice. The central role in this process is undoubtedly played by the value a healthy soil has for the community and for the environment. The strategic design of wet and hydric landscapes is certainly an essential aspect for the regular and exceptional management of the effects produced by pollution and climate change. The research develops the soil as a key subject in the landscape design, specifically in hydric environments where water represents an important factor. The essay is divided into three parts: resources and opportunities of disturbed wet soil, successfully built public space where soil remediation transformed heavy polluted industrial urban sites in fertile public ecosystems within the dense urban structures, and soil design as a domain of urban resilience. The landscape project as an integrated project has spread the seeds of a new approach to the consideration of the contemporary city in an ecological manner

Abitare e interpretare l’esistente Case Nuove, Rosarno

[Italiano]: La pubblicazione raccoglie gli esiti dell’esperienza didattica svolta durante il primo semestre dell’a.a. 2020/21 all’interno dei quattro Laboratori in Progettazione Architettonica e Architettura del paesaggio 3 del Corso di Laurea in Architettura 5UE, del Dipartimento di Architettura della Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II”. Il tema comune è “ABITARE E INTERPRETARE L’ESISTENTE”, e il caso studio quello del quartiere Case Nuove nel comune di Rosarno, provincia di Reggio Calabria.L’Abitare interpreta, a partire dalle indagini sulla città e sul paesaggio, i valori delle relazioni tra i diversi processi di trasformazione, al fine di rafforzare l’accostamento tra l’Architettura e il Paesaggio e, in tal senso ogni laboratorio ha individuato strategie pertinenti volte a rigenerare lo spazio consolidato che viviamo. La definizione di un Abitare Comune e Collettivo diventa strumento di indagine che si muove tra l’abitare pubblico el’abitare privato in modo sperimentale, con l’obiettivo di indagare una dimensione del progetto aperta al cambiamento e all'interazione tra i saperi, capace di definire quelle nuove risposte oggi necessarie e adeguate alle criticità dell’abitare il tempo presente./[English]: The publication collects results of the teaching experience carried out during the first semester of the academic year 2020/21 within four design studios in Architectural Design and Landscape Architecture 3 of the Degree Course inArchitecture 5UE, at the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples "Federico II". The common theme is"LIVING AND INTERPRETING THE EXISTING" and the case study is the Case Nuove district in the municipality ofRosarno, province of Reggio Calabria.Dwelling interprets, starting from the investigations on the city and the landscape, the values ​​of the relationshipsbetween the different transformation processes, in order to strengthen the juxtaposition between Architecture andLandscape and, in this sense, each laboratory has identified strategies pertinent to regenerating the consolidatedspace we live in.The definition of a Common and Collective Living becomes an investigation tool that moves between public andprivate living in an experimental way, with the aim of investigating a dimension of the project open to change and interaction between knowledge, capable of defining those new responses that are necessary and adequate today to the critical issues of living in the present times

Conversazione in Sicilia con Antonio Monestiroli

Ho costruito il testo come una narrazione poggiandomi su di un’analogia, con, in secondo piano, frammenti d’inevitabili aspetti autobiografici, per interrogare e ricomporre la visione di Monestiroli viaggiatore contemporaneo, alla scoperta della Sicilia e in particolare, di quei monumenti antichi della città e del paesaggio di Siracusa che, paradigmi di identità, offrono le ragioni per dichiarare l’attualità dei loro temi nella città presente. Così ho immaginato di accompagnare Monestiroli in una passeggiata, desiderata, ma realmente possibile tra le strade di Ortigia, alla riscoperta, insieme, delle opere della città greca e del loro permanere. Questo testo ha costituito per me quel preciso momento necessario per comprendere come l’opera e il pensiero di Monestiroli, con l’applicazione al tema della città aperta e della sua evoluzione, attribuisca valore nel progetto urbano alla scala del paesaggio, alla campagna e al carattere della natura, ancora, affermo, entità astratta della città aperta di Monestiroli. Il libro, infine, si conclude con un racconto-confessione autobiografico di Antonio Monestiroli che ha voluto narrare la sua vita e la sua educazione milanese all’architettura attraverso gli episodi salienti, i suoi importanti maestri di architettura, le sue opere progettate e costruite e la sua parola scritta e stampata che hanno costruito i capisaldi della sua vita di architetto e di docente al Politecnico di Milano
