Rabi flopping between ground and Rydberg states with dipole-dipole atomic interactions
We demonstrate Rabi flopping of small numbers of atoms between
ground and Rydberg states with . Coherent population oscillations are
observed for single atom flopping, while the presence of two or more atoms
decoheres the oscillations. We show that these observations are consistent with
van der Waals interactions of Rydberg atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Test of isospin symmetry via low energy H(,) charge exchange
We report measurements of the differential cross
sections at six momenta (104-143 MeV/c) and four angles (0-40 deg) by detection
of -ray pairs from decays using the TRIUMF
RMC spectrometer. This region exhibits a vanishing zero-degree cross section
from destructive interference between s-- and p--waves, thus yielding special
sensitivity to pion-nucleon dynamics and isospin symmetry breaking. Our data
and previous data do not agree, with important implications for earlier claims
of large isospin violating effects in low energy pion-nucleon interactions.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Rabi oscillations between ground and Rydberg states with dipole-dipole atomic interactions
We demonstrate Rabi oscillations of small numbers of 87Rb atoms between ground and Rydberg states with n≤43. Coherent population oscillations are observed for single atoms, while the presence of two or more atoms decoheres the oscillations. We show that these observations are consistent with van der Waals interactions of Rydberg atoms
Two-dimensional array of microtraps with atomic shift register on a chip
Arrays of trapped atoms are the ideal starting point for developing registers
comprising large numbers of physical qubits for storing and processing quantum
information. One very promising approach involves neutral atom traps produced
on microfabricated devices known as atom chips, as almost arbitrary trap
configurations can be realised in a robust and compact package. Until now,
however, atom chip experiments have focused on small systems incorporating
single or only a few individual traps. Here we report experiments on a
two-dimensional array of trapped ultracold atom clouds prepared using a simple
magnetic-film atom chip. We are able to load atoms into hundreds of tightly
confining and optically resolved array sites. We then cool the individual atom
clouds in parallel to the critical temperature required for quantum degeneracy.
Atoms are shuttled across the chip surface utilising the atom chip as an atomic
shift register and local manipulation of atoms is implemented using a focused
laser to rapidly empty individual traps.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Transition between nuclear and quark-gluon descriptions of hadrons and light nuclei
We provide a perspective on studies aimed at observing the transition between
hadronic and quark-gluonic descriptions of reactions involving light nuclei. We
begin by summarizing the results for relatively simple reactions such as the
pion form factor and the neutral pion transition form factor as well as that
for the nucleon and end with exclusive photoreactions in our simplest nuclei. A
particular focus will be on reactions involving the deuteron. It is noted that
a firm understanding of these issues is essential for unraveling important
structure information from processes such as deeply virtual Compton scattering
as well as deeply virtual meson production. The connection to exotic phenomena
such as color transparency will be discussed. A number of outstanding
challenges will require new experiments at modern facilities on the horizon as
well as further theoretical developments.Comment: 37 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Reports on Progress in Physic
Parton energy loss limits and shadowing in Drell-Yan dimuon production
A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per
nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is
reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum
fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in
deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the
incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks
passing through a cold nucleus
