Which Preposition Do You Prefer, Cut In or Cut Into? : A Corpus-Based Analysis of Cut In Versus Cut Into Constructions

    No full text
The current study analyzes the phrase “cut in/into pieces” from cognitive semantics and pragmatics perspectives. The literature review revealed that the usage of in indicating resultative states can be traced to the usage in Old English. To check the actual usage of the phrase, the current study conducted the investigation using the COHA. The results show that the concerned usage of in is being replaced by into, which can denote a resultative state of Trajectors without any pragmatic or encyclopedic information

Objective : We conducted a multicenter study in Akita Prefecture, Japan, to characterize the efficacy and safety of sofosbuvir (SOF) plus ribavirin (RBV) therapy in Japanese patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2.Methods : All of the patients were infected with HCV genotype 2. Patients received 12 weeks of treatment with 400 mg of SOF daily plus weight-based RBV (600-1,000 mg daily). Results : A total of 170 patients were enrolled in this study, and 167 patients were followed for 12 weeks after its completion. Among our patients, 28.2% (48/170) had liver cirrhosis (LC). Overall, 159 patients achieved a sustained virologic response for 12 weeks (SVR12), while 8 showed virologic failure. There were no significant differences in the rates of SVR12 between the chronic hepatitis (CH) and LC patients. No significant differences were noted between the CH and LC patients in the rates of any adverse events. Conclusion : We found that SOF plus RBV treatment resulted in high rates of SVR12 with a favorable safety and tolerability profile, including patients with cirrhosis

STM and STS Studies on the Density of States Modulation of Pr@C82 and Sc3C2@C80 Binary-Metallofullerene Peapods

The density of states modulation of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is induced by the encapsulation of two different kinds of metallofullerenes (Pr@C82 and Sc3C2@C80). We report the observation of the modulated density of states using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, where the modulation is successfully reproduced by density functional theory calculation. The metallofullerene molecules in SWCNTs strongly affect the local band structures of SWCNTs. The present findings show that the local electronic structures of SWCNTs can be modified by not only varying the geometric structures of SWCNTs but also the varieties of metallofullerenes encapsulated

A COMPARISON OF THE THERAPEUTIC EFFICACY OF TRANSARTERIAL CHEMOEMBOLIZATION AND COMBINATION THERAPY WITH TRANSARTERIAL CHEMOEMBOLIZATION PLUS SORAFENIB FOR UNRESECTABLE HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA

[Background and Aims] The combination therapy of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus sorafenib has been applied for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its efficacy remains controversial, possibly due to the timing of the initiation of sorafenib treatment. We evaluated the efficacy of this combination therapy when sorafenib treatment was initiated soon after the patient recovered from the adverse events due to the initial TACE procedure. [Methods] This was a retrospective study at a single hospital. Twenty-three unresectable HCC cases who exceeded the up-to-seven criteria but who showed no major vascular invasion or extrahepatic metastasis were enrolled in this study. The patients were classified into two groups : Group C (n=7) received combination therapy ; Group T (n=16) received TACE as the sole therapy. The time-to-tumor progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) of the two groups were compared. [Results] The median TTP in Groups C and T was 1,737 days and 422 days, respectively (p < 0.05). The median survival time (MST) after the initiation of each therapy in Groups C and T was 1,780 days and 371 days, respectively (p < 0.05). [Conclusion] The TTP and OS of patients with unresectable HCC who received TACE plus sorafenib (administered soon after the initial TACE procedure) were superior to those in patients who received TACE alone
