Giant Coulomb broadening and Raman lasing on ionic transitions
CW generation of anti-Stokes Raman laser on a number of blue-green argon-ion
lines (4p-4s, 4p-3d) has been demonstrated with optical pumping from metastable
levels 3d'^2G, 3d^4F. It is found, that the population transfer rate is
increased by a factor of 3-5 (and hence, the output power of such Raman laser)
owing to Coulomb diffusion in the velocity space. Measured are the excitation
and relaxation rates for the metastable level. The Bennett hole on the
metastable level has been recorded using the probe field technique. It has been
shown that the Coulomb diffusion changes shape of the contour to exponential
cusp profile while its width becomes 100 times the Lorentzian one and reaches
values close to the Doppler width. Such a giant broadening is also confirmed by
the shape of the absorption saturation curve.Comment: RevTex 18 pages, 5 figure
Angular momentum spatial distribution symmetry breaking in Rb by an external magnetic field
Excited state angular momentum alignment -- orientation conversion for atoms
with hyperfine structure in presence of an external magnetic field is
investigated. Transversal orientation in these conditions is reported for the
first time. This phenomenon occurs under Paschen Back conditions at
intermediate magnetic field strength. Weak radiation from a linearly polarized
diode laser is used to excite Rb atoms in a cell. The laser beam is polarized
at an angle of pi/4 with respect to the external magnetic field direction.
Ground state hyperfine levels of the 5S_1/2 state are resolved using
laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy under conditions for which all excited
5P_3/2 state hyperfine components are excited simultaneously. Circularly
polarized fluorescence is observed to be emitted in the direction perpendicular
to both to the direction of the magnetic field B and direction of the light
polarization E. The obtained circularity is shown to be in quantitative
agreement with theoretical predictions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Dilepton Spectra from Decays of Light Unflavored Mesons
The invariant mass spectrum of the and pairs
from decays of light unflavored mesons with masses below the -meson mass to final states containing along with a dilepton pair one
photon, one meson, and two mesons are calculated within the framework of the
effective meson theory. The results can be used for simulations of the dilepton
spectra in heavy-ion collisions and for experimental searches of dilepton meson
decays.Comment: 73 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables, REVTeX, new references adde
ON THE PROBLEM OF SHORTWAVE LASERS
A review of present investigations towards vacuum UV laser action utilizing transition in multicharged ions is given. The necessary plasma parameters together with existing reflecting materials are discussed. The emphasis is made on steady-state methods of inversion production
