Proximal business intelligence on the semantic web

Adapting business data and management information to support specific user actions in context is an ongoing topic of research. Approaches typically focus on providing mechanisms to
improve specific information access and transcoding but not on how the information
can be accessed in a mobile, dynamic and ad-hoc manner. Although web ontology has been used to facilitate the loading of data warehouses, less research has been carried out on ontology based mobile reporting. This paper explores how business data can be modeled and accessed using the web ontology
language and then re-used to provide the invisibility of pervasive access; uncovering
more effective architectural models for adaptive information system strategies of this type. This exploratory work is guided in part by a vision of business intelligence that is highly distributed, mobile and fluid, adapting to sensory understanding of the underlying environment in which it operates. A proof-of concept mobile and ambient data access architecture is developed in order to further test the viability of such an approach. Fully Adaptive Propagation of the Quantum-Classical Liouville Equation
In mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics few but important degrees of freedom of a dynamical system are modeled quantum-mechanically while the remaining ones are treated within the classical approximation. Rothe methods established in the theory of partial differential equations are used to control both temporal and spatial discretization errors on grounds of a global tolerance criterion. The trapezoidal rule for adaptive integration of Liouville dynamics (TRAIL) [I. Horenko and M. Weiser, J. Comput. Chem. 24, 1921 (2003)] has been extended to account for non-adiabatic effects in molecular dynamics described by the quantum-classical Liouville equation. In the context of particle methods, the quality of the spatial approximation of the phase-space distributions is maximized while the numerical condition of the least-squares problem for the parameters of particles is minimized. The resulting dynamical scheme is based on a simultaneous propagation of moving particles (Gaussian and Dirac delta-like trajectories) in phase space employing a fully adaptive strategy to upgrade Dirac to Gaussian particles and, vice versa, downgrading Gaussians to Dirac-like trajectories. This allows for the combination of Monte-Carlo-based strategies for the sampling of densities and coherences in multi-dimensional problems with deterministic treatment of non-adiabatic effects.
Numerical examples demonstrate the application of the method to spin-boson systems in different dimensionality. Non-adiabatic effects occuring at conical intersections are treated in the diabatic representation. By decreasing the global tolerance, the numerical solution obtained from the TRAIL scheme are shown to converge towards exact results
Nod1 signaling overcomes resistance of S. pneumoniae to opsonophagocytic killing
Airway infection by the Gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) leads to recruitment of neutrophils but
limited bacterial killing by these cells. Co-colonization by Sp and a Gram-negative species, Haemophilus influenzae (Hi),
provides sufficient stimulus to induce neutrophil and complement-mediated clearance of Sp from the mucosal surface
in a murine model. Products from Hi, but not Sp, also promote killing of Sp by ex vivo neutrophil-enriched peritoneal
exudate cells. Here we identify the stimulus from Hi as its peptidoglycan. Enhancement of opsonophagocytic killing
was facilitated by signaling through nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-1 (Nod1), which is involved in
recognition of γ-D-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-DAP) contained in cell walls of Hi but not Sp. Neutrophils
from mice treated with Hi or compounds containing meso-DAP, including synthetic peptidoglycan fragments, showed
increased Sp killing in a Nod1-dependent manner. Moreover, Nod1-/- mice showed reduced Hi-induced clearance of Sp
during co-colonization. These observations offer insight into mechanisms of microbial competition and demonstrate
the importance of Nod1 in neutrophil-mediated clearance of bacteria in vivo
Substrate-specific Effect on Sirtuin Conformation and Oligomerization
Human sirtuins are a family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD +)-dependent enzymes that are responsible for removing acyl modifications from lysine residues. Sirtuins are involved in the formation and proliferation of cancers and are thought to regulate the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Although sirtuins can be pharmacologically targeted by small molecules, it is not easy to modulate the substrate selectivity of sirtuins despite the chemical diversity of their substrates. Here, we report substrate-specific effects on sirtuin conformation and oligomerization that regulate enzyme deacylase activity. We used fluorescent acyl peptide probes to study substrate interactions with two sirtuin isoforms: SIRT2 and SIRT6. We observed that some of the fluorescent acyl peptides bind sirtuins and change their conformation, whereas other probes bind sirtuins without causing such structural changes. Our fluorescent probes also revealed that SIRT2 forms a dimer at relevant cellular concentrations (~100 nM) in contrast to SIRT6, which is exclusively monomeric. SIRT2 undergoes a conformational transition from dimer to monomer when bound to myristoyl-substrate which slows its demyristoylase reaction, but SIRT2 remains dimeric when performing its deacetylase reaction. Our fluorescent peptide probes will continue to be used to examine substrate specific effects on sirtuin structure and function in order to understand how to pharmacologically modulate sirtuin substrate selectivity
Profiling and framing structures for pervasive information systems development
Pervasive computing is a research field of computing technology that aims to achieve a new computing paradigm. Software engineering has been, since its existence, subject of research and improvement in several areas of interest. Model-Based/Driven Development (MDD) constitutes an approach to software design and development that potentially contributes to: concepts closer to domain and reduction of semantic gaps; automation and less sensitivity to technological changes; capture of expert knowledge and reuse. This paper presents a profiling and framing structure approach for the development of Pervasive Information Systems (PIS). This profiling and framing structure allows the organization of the functionality that can be assigned to computational devices in a system and of the corresponding development structures and models, being. The proposed approach enables a structural approach to PIS development. Which are Better Conditioned Meshes Adaptive, Uniform, Locally Refined or Localised
Adaptive, locally refined and locally adjusted meshes are preferred over
uniform meshes for capturing singular or localised solutions. Roughly speaking,
for a given degree of freedom a solution associated with adaptive, locally
refined and locally adjusted meshes is more accurate than the solution given by
uniform meshes. In this work, we answer the question which meshes are better
conditioned. We found, for approximately same degree of freedom (same size of
matrix), it is easier to solve a system of equations associated with an

Making GDPR Usable: A Model to Support Usability Evaluations of Privacy
We introduce a new model for evaluating privacy that builds on the criteria
proposed by the EuroPriSe certification scheme by adding usability criteria.
Our model is visually represented through a cube, called Usable Privacy Cube
(or UP Cube), where each of its three axes of variability captures,
respectively: rights of the data subjects, privacy principles, and usable
privacy criteria. We slightly reorganize the criteria of EuroPriSe to fit with
the UP Cube model, i.e., we show how EuroPriSe can be viewed as a combination
of only rights and principles, forming the two axes at the basis of our UP
Cube. In this way we also want to bring out two perspectives on privacy: that
of the data subjects and, respectively, that of the controllers/processors. We
define usable privacy criteria based on usability goals that we have extracted
from the whole text of the General Data Protection Regulation. The criteria are
designed to produce measurements of the level of usability with which the goals
are reached. Precisely, we measure effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction,
considering both the objective and the perceived usability outcomes, producing
measures of accuracy and completeness, of resource utilization (e.g., time,
effort, financial), and measures resulting from satisfaction scales. In the
long run, the UP Cube is meant to be the model behind a new certification
methodology capable of evaluating the usability of privacy, to the benefit of
common users. For industries, considering also the usability of privacy would

Personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries
Widespread use of the Internet has resulted in digital libraries that are increasingly used by diverse communities of users for diverse purposes and in which sharing and collaboration have become important social elements. As such libraries become commonplace, as their contents and services become more varied, and as their patrons become more experienced with computer technology, users will expect more sophisticated services from these libraries. A simple search function, normally an integral part of any digital library, increasingly leads to user frustration as user needs become more complex and as the volume of managed information increases. Proactive digital libraries, where the library evolves from being passive and untailored, are seen as offering great potential for addressing and overcoming these issues and include techniques such as personalisation and recommender systems. In this paper, following on from the DELOS/NSF Working Group on Personalisation and Recommender Systems for Digital Libraries, which met and reported during 2003, we present some background material on the scope of personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries. We then outline the working group’s vision for the evolution of digital libraries and the role that personalisation and recommender systems will play, and we present a series of research challenges and specific recommendations and research priorities for the field

Evaluation of a large-scale donation of Lifebox pulse oximeters to non-physician anaesthetists in Uganda
Summary Pulse oximetry is widely accepted as essential monitoring for safe anaesthesia, yet is frequently unavailable in resource-limited settings. The Lifebox pulse oximeter, and associated management training programme, was delivered to 79 non-physician anaesthetists attending the 2011 Uganda Society of Anaesthesia Annual Conference. Using a standardised assessment, recipients were tested for their knowledge of oximetry use and hypoxia management before, immediately following and 3–5 months after the training. Before the course, the median (IQR [range]) test score for the anaesthetists was 36 (34–39 [26–44]) out of a maximum of 50 points. Immediately following the course, the test score increased to 41 (38–43 [25–47]); p < 0.0001 and at the follow-up visit at 3–5 months it was 41 (39–44 [33–49]); p = 0.001 compared with immediate post-training test scores, and 75/79 (95%) oximeters were in routine clinical use. This method of introduction resulted in a high rate of uptake of oximeters into clinical practice and a demonstrable retention of knowledge in a resource-limited setting
