Delayed Photoionization Feedback in a Super Star Cluster in SBS0335-052E
SBS0335-052 is a well studied Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy with one of the
lowest metallicities of any known galaxy. It also contains 6 previously
identified Super Star Clusters. We combine archival HST NICMOS images in the Pa
alpha line and the 1.6 micron continuum of the eastern component, SBS0335-052E,
with other space and ground based data to perform a multi-wavelength analysis
of the super star clusters. We concentrate on the southern most clusters,
designated S1 and S2, which appear to be the youngest clusters and are the
strongest emitters of Pa alpha, radio, and x-ray flux. Our analysis leads to a
possible model for S1 and perhaps S2 as a cluster of very young, massive stars
with strong stellar winds. The wind density can be high enough to absorb the
majority of ionizing photons within less than 1000 AU of the stars, creating
very compact HII regions that emit optically thick radiation at radio
wavelengths. These winds would then effectively quench the photoionizing flux
very close to the stars. This can delay the onset of negative feedback by
photoionization and photodissociation on star formation in the clusters. This
is significant since SBS0335-052E resembles the conditions that were probably
common for high redshift star formation in galaxies near the epoch of

NICMOS Imaging of the HR 4796A Circumstellar Disk
We report the first near infrared (NIR) imaging of a circumstellar annular
disk around the young (~8 Myr), Vega-like star, HR 4796A. NICMOS coronagraph
observations at 1.1 and 1.6 microns reveal a ring-like symmetrical structure
peaking in reflected intensity 1.05 arcsec +/- 0.02 arcsec (~ 70 AU) from the
central A0V star. The ring geometry, with an inclination of 73.1 deg +/- 1.2
deg and a major axis PA of 26.8 deg +/- 0.6 deg, is in good agreement with
recent 12.5 and 20.8 micron observations of a truncated disk (Koerner, et al.
1998). The ring is resolved with a characteristic width of less than 0.26
arcsec (17 AU) and appears abruptly truncated at both the inner and outer
edges. The region of the disk-plane inward of ~60 AU appears to be relatively
free of scattering material. The integrated flux density of the part of the
disk that is visible (greater than 0.65 arcsec from the star) is found to be
7.5 +/- 0.5 mJy and 7.4 +/- 1.2 mJy at 1.1 and 1.6 microns, respectively.
Correcting for the unseen area of the ring yields total flux densities of 12.8
+/- 1.0 mJy and 12.5 +/- 2.0 mJy, respectively (Vega magnitudes = 12.92 /+-
0.08 and 12.35 +/-0.18). The NIR luminosity ratio is evaluated from these
results and ground-based photometry of the star. At these wavelengths
Ldisk(lambda)/L*(lambda) = 1.4 +/- 0.2E-3 and 2.4 +/- 0.5E-3, giving reasonable
agreement between the stellar flux scattered in the NIR and that which is
absorbed in the visible and re-radiated in the thermal infrared. The somewhat
red reflectance of the disk at these wavelengths implies mean particle sizes in
excess of several microns, larger than typical interstellar grains. The
confinement of material to a relatively narrow annular zone implies dynamical
constraints on the disk particles by one or more as yet unseen bodies.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure for associated gif file see:

Detrital Neodymium and (Radio)Carbon as Complementary Sedimentary Bedfellows? The Western Arctic Ocean as a Testbed
Interactions between organic and detrital mineral phases strongly influence both the dispersal and accumulation of terrestrial organic carbon (OC) in continental margin sediments. Yet the complex interplay among biological, chemical, and physical processes limits our understanding of how organo-mineral interactions evolve during sediment transfer and burial. In particular, diverse OC sources and complex hydrodynamic processes hinder the assessment of how the partnership of organic matter and its mineral host evolves during supply and dispersal over continental margins. In this study, we integrate new and compiled sedimentological (grain size, surface area), organic (%OC, OC-δ13C, OC-F14C), and inorganic isotopic (εNd, 87Sr/86Sr) geochemical data for a broad suite of surface sediments spanning the Western Arctic Ocean from the Bering Sea to the Mackenzie River Delta that capture diverse sources and ages of both terrestrial and marine material deposited in contrasting shelf and slope settings. Spatial gradients in sediment properties were used to delineate regional sources and transport processes influencing the dispersion and persistence of OC-mineral particle associations during export and burial. We found strong relationships between physical parameters, aluminum content, and OC-14C suggesting that terrestrial OC remains tightly associated with its detrital mineral carrier during source-to-sink transport. Notably, carbon and neodymium isotopic data yield consistent information regarding organic matter provenance. Results obtained highlight the potential for coupled organic-inorganic tracer measurements to elucidate sediment sources and to constrain physical and geochemical processes during sediment mobilization and transport in the Western Arctic Ocean. Tandem measurements of carbon and Nd isotopes may provide a new way to identify large-scale biogeochemical and ecological changes in the sources, nature, and fate of OC stemming from predicted increases in sea ice loss and fluvial inputs of dissolved and particulate OC to this complex and dynamic high latitude marginal sea
High-resolution Near-Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object
Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with
the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern
characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent
dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected
nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side
to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2)
images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces the data has
a flared accretion disk with dust grains larger than standard interstellar
medium grains by a factor of approximately 2.1. A single hotspot on the stellar
surface provides the necessary asymmetry to fit the images and is consistent
with previous modeling of the light curve and images. Photometric analysis
results in an estimated extinction of Av>~80; however, since the photometry
measures only scattered light rather than direct stellar flux, this a lower
limit. The radiative transfer models require an extinction of Av = 7,900.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap.
High-Density Flexible Parylene-Based Multielectrode Arrays for Retinal and Spinal Cord Stimulation
Novel flexible parylene-based high-density electrode arrays have been developed for functional electrical stimulation in retinal and spinal cord applications. These electrode arrays are microfabricated according to single-metal-layer and, most recently, dual-metal-layer processes. A new heat-molding process has been implemented to conform electrode arrays to approximate the curvature of canine retinas, and chronic implantation studies have been undertaken to study the mechanical effects of parylene-based prostheses on the retina, with excellent results to date. Electrode arrays have also been implanted and tested on the spinal cords of murine models, with the ultimate goal of facilitation of locomotion after spinal cord injury; these arrays provide a higher density and better spatial control of stimulation and recording than is typically possible using traditional fine-wire electrodes. Spinal cord stimulation typically elicited three muscle responses, an early (direct), a middle (monosynaptic), and a late (polysynaptic) response, classified based on latency after stimulation. Stimulation at different rostrocaudal levels of the cord yielded markedly different muscle responses, highlighting the need for such high-density arrays

In winter, the combination of latitude, geology, winds, and ocean currents produces ice cover extending far into the southern Bering Sea. In the spring and summer, retreating ice, longer daylight hours, and nutrient-rich ocean water result in exceptionally high marine production, vital to both sea life and people. The intense burst of spring production, together with more episodic summer and early fall production, provides the energy that powers the complex food web and ultimately sustains nearly half of the US annual commercial fish landings, as well as providing food and cultural value to thousands of Bering Sea coastal and island residents.Finally,

Genomic surveillance of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. in hospital sink drains and patients
Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. are important human pathogens that cause a wide spectrum of clinical disease. In healthcare settings, sinks and other wastewater sites have been shown to be reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant E. coli and Klebsiella spp., particularly in the context of outbreaks of resistant strains amongst patients. Without focusing exclusively on resistance markers or a clinical outbreak, we demonstrate that many hospital sink drains are abundantly and persistently colonised with diverse populations of E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca, including both antimicrobial-resistant and susceptible strains. Using whole genome sequencing (WGS) of 439 isolates, we show that environmental bacterial populations are largely structured by ward and sink, with only a handful of lineages, such as E. coli ST635, being widely distributed, suggesting different prevailing ecologies which may vary as a result of different inputs and selection pressures. WGS of 46 contemporaneous patient isolates identified one (2%; 95% CI 0.05-11%) E. coli urine infection-associated isolate with high similarity to a prior sink isolate, suggesting that sinks may contribute to up to 10% of infections caused by these organisms in patients on the ward over the same timeframe. Using metagenomics from 20 sink-timepoints, we show that sinks also harbour many clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes including blaCTX-M, blaSHV and mcr, and may act as niches for the exchange and amplification of these genes. Our study reinforces the potential role of sinks in contributing to Enterobacterales infection and antimicrobial resistance in hospital patients, something that could be amenable to intervention
Risk, reassurance and routine: a qualitative study of narrative understandings of the potential for HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in England
BACKGROUND: HIV testing has seen a rapid evolution over the last decade with multiple modalities now in use globally. In recent years HIV self-testing (HIVST) has been legalised in the UK paving the way for further expansion of testing. Interventions are delivered in particular social contexts which shape uptake. It is therefore important to understand how novel interventions are likely to be received by their intended users. This study aims to understand how HIVST compliments existing testing strategies considered or adopted by men who have sex with men (MSM). We do this by analysing normative discourses surrounding HIV testing and their perceptions of HIVST's potential future roles. METHODS: Six focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with 47 MSM in London, Manchester and Plymouth. One focus group included only MSM who reported higher risk behaviours and one with those who had never tested for HIV. Data were analysed through a thematic framework analysis. RESULTS: Three main narratives for testing for HIV were identified: (i) testing in response to a specific risk event; (ii) as reassurance when there was a small amount of doubt or anxiety related to HIV; and (iii) in response to social norms perpetuated through peers, HIV community groups and the medical establishment to test regularly for HIV. HIVST had limited utility for men when testing in response to specific risk events except in the case of significant structural barriers to other testing opportunities. HIVST was considered to have utility when seeking reassurance, and was thought to be very useful when testing to satisfy the needs and expectations of others around regular testing. There was some ambivalence about the incursion of a clinical intervention into the home. CONCLUSIONS: HIVST following risk events will likely be limited to those for whom existing service provision is insufficient to meet immediate needs based on structural or personal barriers to testing. Obligations of biological citizenship are central to MSM's understanding of the utility of HIVST. In the context of discourses of biocitizenship, men perceive HIVST to have dual roles: firstly as a tool to manage (mild) anxiety around one's HIV status based on an acknowledgment of HIV vulnerability arising from being homosexually active. Secondly, HIVST is useful in complying with social norms and meeting the perceived demands of biomedicine
