    A new Façade Concept for an Existing Office Building

    In this paper a case study is presented relating to the redesign of an office buildingdating from the 1960s. Especially the detailing and the structural complexity ofdesigning the new double skin façade are described. The building consists of a twostoreypodium topped by a nine-storey tower, the overall height is 40m aboveground level. In order to optimise the building's energy efficiency and present thepublic a modern appearance the whole building is completely renovated. Theexisting building envelope which mainly consisted of prefabricated concreteelements was dismantled and is now replaced by a transparent floor to floor doubleskin façade.     Climate Variability in the Woodbush Granite Grasslands of South Africa: Effects on Grassland Diversity

    South African old-growth grasslands are hyper-diverse ecosystems which evolved under naturally occurring rainfall variability. It is predicted that future precipitation patterns will become more variable, which could lead to increased frequencies of extreme and prolonged drought events. This study aimed to investigate the effects of climate variability on plant diversity of the fragmented pristine, mistbelt grasslands of the Woodbush Granite Grasslands (WGG) at Haenertsburg, South Africa. It has been reported that species composition has changed substantially in this area, as disturbance-tolerant species enter these systems or existing competitor species become more dominant. A Temporal Beta-diversity Index (TBI) was used to determine the gains and losses in taxonomic and functional diversity, and of endemic and threatened species since 2009. Results show that there was a gain in species from before (2009) to onset of drought (2015) and a loss in species from the onset of the drought (2015) to after the drought (2019), while the overall effect of the drought on species occurrence from 2009 to 2019 was non-significant suggesting ecosystem resilience to drought

    VSOP observation of the quasar PKS 2215+020: a new laboratory for core-jet physics at z=3.572

    We report results of a VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Programme) observation of a high redshift quasar PKS 2215+020 (z=3.572). The ~1 milliarcsecond resolution image of the quasar reveals a prominent `core-jet' structure on linear scales from 5/h to 300/h pc ($H_0=100*h km/(s*Mpc). The brightness temperatures and sizes of bright features identified in the jet are consistent with emission from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic energy losses. The jet is powered by the central black hole with estimated mass of ~4*10^9 solar masses. Comparisons with VLA and ROSAT observations indicate a possible presence of an extended radio/X-ray halo surrounding 2215+020.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, aastex macros; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, V.546, N.2 *(January 10 2001

    Four New BL Lac Surveys: Sampling New Populations

    The advent of large area deep radio and X-ray surveys is leading to the creation of many new BL Lac samples. In particular, the ROSAT All-Sky, Green Bank and FIRST surveys are proving to be rich sources of new BL Lacs. We will discuss the methods used in four independent BL Lac searches based on these surveys.     Blob ejection from advection-dominated accretion flow: observational consequences

    There is increasing evidence for the presence of an optically thin advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in low luminosity active galactic nuclei and radio-loud quasars. The present paper is devoted to explore the fate of a blob ejected from an ADAF, and to discuss its observational consequences. It is inevitable for the ejected blob to drastically expand into its surroundings. Consequently, it is expected that a group of relativistic electrons should be accelerated, which may lead to nonthermal flares, since a strong shock will be formed by the interaction between the blob and its surroundings. Then the blob cools down efficiently, leading to the appearance of recombination lines about 10510^5s after its ejection from an ADAF. We apply this model to NGC 4258 for some observational prediction, and to PKS 2149--306 for the explanation of observational evidence. Future simultaneous observations of recombination X-ray lines and continuum emission are highly desired to test the present model.Comment: 4 pages in emulateapj.sty, no figure.     The 3-53 keV Spectrum of the Quasar 1508+5714: X-rays from z = 4.3

    We present a high-quality X-ray spectrum in the 3--53 keV rest-frame band of the radio-loud quasar 1508+5714, by far the brightest known X-ray source at z > 4. A simple power-law model with an absorption column density equal to the Galactic value in the direction of the source provides an excellent and fully adequate fit to the data; the measured power-law photon index Gamma = 1.42 (+0.13,-0.10). Upper limits to Fe K alpha line emission and Compton-reflection components are derived. We offer evidence for both X-ray and radio variability in this object and provide the first contemporaneous radio spectrum (alpha = -0.25). The data are all consistent with a picture in which the emission from this source is dominated by a relativistically beamed component in both the X-ray and radio bands.Comment: 8 pages, TeX, 2 postscript figures; to appear in ApJ Letter

    Examining the relationship between rheumatoid arthritis, multimorbidity and adverse health-related outcomes: a systematic review protocol

    Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterised by articular inflammation and systemic complications. Multimorbidity (the presence of two or more long-term health conditions) is highly prevalent in people with RA but the effect of multimorbidity on mortality and other health-related outcomes is poorly understood. Objective: To determine what is known about the effect, if any, of multimorbidity on mortality and health-related outcomes in individuals with RA. Design: Systematic review of the literature. The following electronic medical databases will be searched: MEDLINE, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, The Cochrane Library and Scopus. Included studies will be quality appraised using the Quality in Prognostic Studies tool developed by the Cochrane Prognosis Methods Group. A narrative synthesis of findings will be undertaken and meta-analyses considered, if appropriate. This protocol adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols 2015 guidelines, ensuring the quality of the review. Conclusions: Understanding the influence of multimorbidity on mortality and other health-related outcomes in RA will provide an important basis of knowledge with the potential to improve future clinical management of RA.
